Atlas iron is a small fish in a big sea and they are lost 40 million for the year, FMG, RIO etc are cruising along just fine, iron ore is low there is lay offs but most seem to be dead wood that was just along for the ride in the boom, a lot have finished construction phase so instead of the construction workers moving to the next job, they are left without work, production is still going ahead cos they either need to keep mining to pay off debt or now that construction and rail is finished that is a cost they no longer have to cover so now they are making money instead of spending, I work in gold and with the **** gold price at the moment some mines a paddling to stay afloat, were back stroking enjoying the nice weather cos everything we have is paid for, all shutdowns/breakdowns etc are paid in cash, we are making 10 mil a month profit, some say its not much for a gold mine but that all goes in the bank and not to any finance

Well if that's what their profit is that means Tropicana is making more then them cause they are running at a 14mil profit pretty scary seeing they are only running at about 30%

we make gold for $1000 an oz, there making gold for about $500oz, that includes camp and freighting everything in and out, but they are still financed to the **** house for another year though, they've got a good grade of ore too, ours is terrible, just make money by moving lots of dirt, and moving lots of dirt costs lots of money!! anglo are sitting on a gold mine, pardon the pun!!!

cant blame them

State needs the BHP Roxby Expansion to kick off in some way, shape or form - plenty of jobs there

Last i heard they were moving towards a pilot plant, some new leaching process, that was more suited to the size / scale needed if the expansion went ahead

Wasn't it the state government that canned the expansion a few years ago?

BHP got cold feet, cant recall if it was around GFC or the later commod prices falling on ***

the heap leaching process sounds a bit full on and a big shortcut on their current processing

expansion talk was massive, de sal plants in upper gulf, two or three years just to remove overburden etc

good rock is there, all the expo drilling has been done

What's the point of demanding top dollar if the mine decides to shut up shop because it's not profitable

Right and sitting on the grass for weeks at a time helps your family and the future work opportunities of your kids how again exactly ?

I went through the Curragh and Gordonstone fiasco in 1994-1996 oh opinionated union person and let me tell ya for the national guard/ army and 100's of police to be brought into town to protect workers arriving by bus and families who were called scabs, told me back then that unionists have a screw or 2 loose !

Especially after they set fire to over 50 homes because if they couldn't live in them no-one could

How did that turn out again ?

Oh yeah the town lost over 5000 jobs, everyone who was a previous mine worker had to move away, none of their kids could get employment and the people who took a EBA and wanted to work despite the personal threats got Emerald back on their feet after 3 or so years and the place now has synergy...

Take your union BS and stick it where the sun don't shine because i have lived it, been a part of it and seen the destruction caused to families because of a narrow minded attitude led by higher ups that still get paid even when you dont!!

Cheers

I've never been in the mining industry and have no intention of going into it.

However I am curious what the 'stupid low flat rate is' today compared to the previous rate(s)

I was a union shop steward for a little while in my previous workplace with the AMWU, and I managed to get all the apprentices competency achievement record books actually signed off, as the company wasn't holding up their end of the bargain after they wouldn't sign them off when we completed modules at TAFE and completed the work assessment part at work. Which was a legal requirement on their behalf.

We had TAFE on our backs about it all the time as they needed to be signed but weren't ever getting done, the TAFE wouldn't do anything, management would never sign off the modules so we were all stuck in limbo for about 2 years and couldn't get our work part of our apprenticeships signed off.

No sitting on the grass here, no name calling and no violence but it wasn't getting done without union help and it was a big issue for us as it meant we wouldn't progress through our apprenticeships.

Thats my little union experience, not all of us were/are crazy screw-looses But I guess as a collective group over the years unionists certainly done things wrong, more negotiation, less violence.
