To be on the "approved" list, you have to be mates with Hunt and/or Morrison I'm guessing? |

However, I do think the Feds comments that they don't want to supply free RATs because it will undercut the retailers is rather crude. Adds more fuel to the conspiracies. Edit: correction. You are right pooka. They have a TGA number which means it's approved for sale, but its not on the tga list of approved kits to use...... Clear as mud.

So this morning i asked my mate who is covid positive if he wants anything from down the shop. All he asked was if i could swing throught the chemist and get him a rat. No drama there. In the chemist there was a long line and a staff member made an announcement that they were out of rat tests. So like everone else, i left. There is atleast in my area more demand then supply.

I just don't understand not making RAT freely available. Let's simplify a bit and say a PCR costs $150 and a RAT costs $15.
There will still need some follow up PCRs but the math seems obvious. Not to mention you can't spend money or work lining up for hours which is an economic loss. Unless they were thinking that people will pay out of their pocket because it is more convienent but seems to me there are a lot of ****ed off people and a backflip on this is almost certain |

No shortage of RATs at Melbourne airport. Friend's parents just arrived from overseas, they were given 5........each!
Funny that the parents use a new model Huawei phone, which is banned from google play store, and which is where they need to download the government app to submit their results

My sister came home from overseas 3 weeks ago. Double vaxxed etc. Had to have a PCR test on day 5 and day 12. Both negative. Day 14 she gets a fever and the sniffles. We had 4 Rapid kits in preparation for returning home from Brisbane but the rules were constantly changing and in the end we didn't need them. We gave one packet (2 kits) to sister to use while waiting for a 3rd PCR appointment.
She used both and both tested negative on both. Long story short, her 3rd PCR returned a positive result for covid. Fat lot of good rapid tests are. My sister felt fine the next day too. Still stuck in isolation for another 7 days though but time to ignore case numbers and move on. The health system will cope as long as people do the right thing and protect themselves and practice good hygiene. We just spent 3 weeks in bris. Came home today. Ignored the news outlets for 3 weeks and had a great holiday. Wearing masks and practising good hygiene and social distancing was a small price to pay.

So my Father in Law finally got flights out of central China after being stuck for the last year, he is boarding now and lands in the morning in Melbourne. He is vaccinated so we look up the requirements for home quarantine, it looks really easy (too easy??) From the VIC GOV site
Quick guide If fully vaccinated, or if aged under 12 and 2 months: Immediately quarantine at home upon arrival in Victoria. Get a PCR test or a rapid antigen test within 24 hours of arriving and continue to quarantine until you receive a negative result. Get a PCR test or a rapid antigen test between day 5 and 7 after arriving. You don’t have to quarantine while awaiting the result of this test. There are restrictions on entering sensitive settings (including education) Note: The above applies to people aged under 12 and 2 months if they are travelling solo or travelling with a parent/guardian who is either fully vaccinated or medically exempt. We already have some RATs, does this actually mean he can do a RAT when he gets home and is free to go immediately if it is negative? Or does he have to keep quarantining to day 5-7 gets a negative (it doesn't state this clearly if he does)??? Getting out the same day with a RAT seems a bit dumb.

I went looking for information on the rapid test kits currently available in Australia and came across the following that I thought I'd share here.
As of 01/01/2022 there are 160 RAT' kits approved by the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) which can be lawfully supplied in Australia. Out of the 160 kits, only 18 have been approved for use in Australia by the TGA. As of 21/12/2021, from those 18 TGA approved kits, only 6 have provided the TGA with evidence of performance for which Covid-19 variants they can detect. But here's the conundrum. NONE of the 18 approved kits have so far been able to provide evidence to the TGA that they detect the Omicron variant! As these kits are the talk of the town at the moment, I thought I'd compile a list of the 18 TGA approved RAT kits by name, test type (nasal or saliva), their clinical sensitivity rating (very high, high or acceptable) and the Covid-19 variants they can detect (if evidence provided) below. To explain the clinical "sensitivity" rating, the TGA based its judgment of the performance of each kit on studies done by the manufacturer that show the positive percent agreement (PPA) – the percentage of individuals that produced a positive test result using a rapid antigen test, in comparison with a positive result by a PCR test. The TGA sets the minimum clinical sensitivity a test kit must achieve before it is approved at 80%, which it labels as "acceptable sensitivity". A kit with 90% PPA is labelled "high sensitivity" and a kit that records clinical sensitivity greater than 95% is considered to have "very high sensitivity". The 18 TGA approved RAT kits are listed below: Name: All Test COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test Type: Saliva Sensitivity: High Variants detected: No evidence provided to TGA as of 21/12/2021 Name: All Test SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Rapid Test Type: Nasal Sensitivity: Very high Variants detected: No evidence provided to TGA as of 21/12/2021 Name: CareStart COVID-19 Antigen Home Test Type: Nasal Sensitivity: Acceptable Variants detected: Alpha, Beta, Delta, Kappa, Epsilon and Lambda variants. Name: Ecotest COVID-19 Antigen Saliva Test kit Type: Saliva Sensitivity: Acceptable Variants detected: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Kappa variants. Name: Hough COVID-19 Home Test Type: Nasal Sensitivity: High Variants detected: No evidence provided to TGA as of 21/12/2021 Name: InnoScreen COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test Device Type: Nasal Sensitivity: Acceptable Variants detected: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Kappa and Epsilon variants. Name: JusChek SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Rapid Test Type: Nasal Sensitivity: High Variants detected: No evidence provided to TGA as of 21/12/2021 Name: JusChek COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test Type: Saliva Sensitivity: High Variants detected: No evidence provided to TGA as of 21/12/2021 Name: LYHER Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) Antigen Test Kit Type: Nasal Sensitivity: Very high Variants detected: No evidence provided to TGA as of 21/12/2021 Name: My Covid Test Antigen Rapid Test Type: Saliva Sensitivity: High Variants detected: No evidence provided to TGA as of 21/12/2021 Name: OnSite COVID-19 Ag Self Test Type: Nasal Sensitivity: Very high Variants detected: No evidence provided to TGA as of 21/12/2021 Name: Orawell COVID-19 Ag Rapid saliva test device Type: Saliva Sensitivity: High Variants detected: No evidence provided to TGA as of 21/12/2021 Name: Panbio COVID-19 Antigen Self-Test Type: Nasal Sensitivity: Very high Variants detected: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Kappa, Zeta, Theta and Eta variants. Name: Rapid SARS-COV-2 Antigen Test Card Self-test Type: Nasal Sensitivity: Very high Variants detected: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Eta, Iota, Kappa, Theta and Eta variants. Name: RightSign COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test Cassette Type: Nasal Sensitivity: High Variants detected: No evidence provided to TGA as of 21/12/2021 Name: SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Self Test Nasal Type: Nasal Sensitivity: Acceptable Variants detected: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Kappa, Epsilon, Iota and Zeta variants. Name: TESTSEALABS COVID-19 Antigen Test Cassette Type: Nasal Sensitivity: High Variants detected: No evidence provided to TGA as of 21/12/2021 Name: V-Chek COVID-19 Antigen Saliva Test Type: Saliva Sensitivity: Very high Variants detected: No evidence provided to TGA as of 21/12/2021 In summery, 160 kits have been approved for supply in Australia. Only 18 out of those 160 have been TGA approved. And only 6 out of those 18 have provided evidence of performance data to the TGA as to which variants they can detect. Having just 18 kits that are TGA approved in Australia is way to low. There needs to be much more TGA approved kits available to the public. What's taking so long? A 160 approved for sale, but only 18 are TGA approved? Unbelievable. |

actually, to be fair, keeping the borders closed isn't getting on with your lives.
If you disregard the news sensationalists, and just get out and about like normal, you will see that the eastern states are actually getting on with their lives. Vaccinations in Vic and Nsw are in the mid to high 90% range. Out of a combined population of approx 15million people there are about 1500 -2000 in hospital and only a small percentage of those in ICU. The case numbers look impressive for the drama lovers but they aren't stopping people getting on with their lives.

what is the point of getting vaccinated if you are still going to try to live with an elimination strategy? It just means in 2 years WA haven't really gone anywhere. Like I said, ignore the media hype. Life is going on in the eastern states. I just got back from 3 weeks holiday in bris. Did aussie zoo twice with the family, went out to our favourite Thai restaurant 3 times, spent way too much at the shops and had a good relax at my folks semi rural property. Back home now and back to work tomorrow. Life goes on. Everywhere.

Had a 3 week driving holiday through outback NSW and regional Victoria in December. No restrictions, very relaxing. Unfortunately, as with 2020, the west Australia portion of the family was missing from Christmas celebrations.
Mums sister has end stage dementia and they haven’t seen each other for over two years. What’s the point? Morgan is cutting off the state from reality until what? |

US records more than 1 million COVID cases in one day.
The highly mutated variant drove cases to a record 1,083,948 – the most by a large margin that any country has ever reported. https://www.theage.com.au/world/nort...04-p59lv0.html |

I'm not trying to talk down the virus, but the virus now (omicron) is not the same virus that kicked things off. Like all viruses, they mutate, and generally mutate themselves out of existence eventually. With vaccination rates reasonably high, it doesn't make sense to still act the same as we did 2 years ago with border closures and lockdowns etc. It should be able to be managed just with density limits, social distancing, masks and good hygiene. I say 'should' because there are always the few that just don't get it. I'm forever having people get in 'my space' when queuing etc but I'm not a confrontational person so I just move myself rather than telling them to move. At the zoo the other day a woman sat so close to my daughter, she actually sat partly on my daughters handbag. I just made sure we were all masked up rather than make a scene.

It is getting interesting, and after doing a bit of interstate travel I think everyone is ready to move on.
Prior to <90% vaxxed I could see some reasoning for not opening up. Now that everyone who either wants to or can has had the opportunity then its time to just let it go. A few questions for anyone who cares; 1. When do we stop wearing masks? What is the trigger, surely its not indefinite? 2. When do we stop publishing cases and just rely on websites etc for the data? For me, 1. now...what more can we practically do? Are people suggesting there is no end date and we just wait it out? 2. What benefit is there, really, to know how many cases there are if you are vaxxed, what else can you actually do? Will you WFH forever? Not travel interstate anymore? Unless people are dropping dead in the streets I cant see any actual path or trigger to move forward, we can be in limbo for much longer IMO.

I personally think the eastern states have handled this opening of the borders badly. We have gone from strict restrictions to basically free overnight, in the scheme of things. There was no gradual easing in and it should have started earlier. There was no plan to prepare people. Just jump in the deep end in because, I believe, these idiot Premiers are playing political popularity games knowing their states wont stand for another Christmas locked down. The fact they opened the borders and eased all these restrictions at the busiest time of the year, on top of everything else, is mindboggling to me. Even if there are alot of families and business who are thankful for it. P.S. I am not saying it was unwelcomed or should it have been delayed any longer. Just the planning, execution and dealing with expected outcomes were certainly below par. So what do you think will happen to WA on the 5th of February when, if McClown is true to his word, reopens the border and drops restrictions? Do you really think covid will avoid you "just cos"? Do you really think McClown standing at a press conference singing Stop Right Now, Thank You Very Much and wagging his finger at the camera will scare covid from entering the state? What happens when you go from 1 case every few weeks to 1000 or 2000 a day? WA has had no practice or experience in dealing with this level of outbreak. So you really think the WA public will cope when what's happening here now happens there when the avoidance strategy is dropped. I know he made a big deal of your wonderful low unemployment. But do you realise what dangers he is doing to your biggest workforce. Mining companies are employing workers on casual contracts, so they can turf them out at a moment notice. Right now you have mines who are employing some dope and firing him 3 days later only to show up at another mine a week later... Over and over. In some cases they are hiring undesirable workers for certain positions. Like one mine who hired a known and convicted alcoholic, with an outstanding offense, to drive and maintain heavy vehicles. Surely that's not normal. I actually think ultimately he will renege on opening on the 5/2. Last edited by arm79; 04-01-2022 at 11:21 PM. |

Yes, RATs are currently the new toilet paper, but that can change in a matter of weeks. The South African omicron wave was over in a month. Given that we're not imposing major restrictions to draw this out, it's not unreasonable to think ours wont be a similar timeframe. The other kits suppliers have probably decided that by the time they get approved and get stock into the country, the opportunity to make $$ will have passed. It would be a different story if this was likely to drag on for 3 months or more. |
