I love how we actually have the manufacturing and agricultural capability for energy independence from the Middle East, as well as businesses with the capability to do it and a cleaner method of fuel to boot but we still go begging and hang wringing to OPEC hoping they'll increase production to cut everyone some slack.

Amazing a tiny country such as Great Britain still manufactures so many things, respects its Heritage and farming culture and still has the highest monetary value in its pound. I bet they are glad they never went to Euros.

$2.41 in town today for diesel and $2.17 for 91 and the businesses in town wonder why locals aren't going to town and spending money...

I trust people haven't forgotten the increase in excise coming back in September. I'm expecting fuel prices to sit around $2.75/$3/L for 98 come end of this year.

I filled up yesterday. I think it was the first time ever I had to use a PIN >$100) with 4c/lt discount to pay. Not even a full tank, 3/4 at best for 98.
Assuming that the full 22c excise discount is actually passed on, it's going to be a lot worse as mentioned above in September. Not everyone knows about it but it was always a sunset so a bit of a nice little wedge setup right there As for gas, that predictably went up but my electricity went down so that's good. The gas issue is a farce, we don't reserve enough for our own use but it's taking the **** with what we get back in export revenue. They'd just flog more offshore if they opened it up more, I'm not convinced it would help us domestically either in supply or revenue regardless of government. We are so dumb when it comes to our natural resources. |

People whinging about the price of lettuce too these days, even if they were free I still wouldn't eat em, if the price of potatoes goes up too much we'll lose all our Irish people.
I'll trade my lettuce for your 98 octane unleaded Hopefully a kick in the *** for everyone to grow their own fruit and veggies like wogs do, taste way better too. |

Was talking to one of the staff at the gaso not far from me a while back, they said all there 95 was 98. Might just be a Kiwi thing with supply issues.

U.S fuel crisis news.
Biden is trying to call for a 'Gas tax holiday' like our excise cut we now have here. Its only 18cents per gallon....LOL! The yanks have had it too good for too long with so many V8 oil burners! |

98 @ $2.78.9! Canberra suburb.91 @ $2.26.9 That 98 price does not sound right, everything around is in the $245.9 range.

Great discussion above about the WVO SVO and the self sufficiency themes. Well done Rokwiz. I agree that the country could be self sufficient in energy and transportation, and share the despair that it is run (gas!) the way it is currently run. It's really up to us if we want it. And agree with the officialdom bit.
At the start of Corona we planted fruit trees and have run a productive garden for some years before this, also this winter we've tried hydro lettuces which amazingly are growing quite well in the Vic winter (darker green leaves too) although a bit slower than summer. 2 jerries left from earlier price, that 2.78 in Canberra is nuts!

And yes, keeping the pound was a godsend. If the rate of interest/currency supply was set somewhere else (ie somewhere with Octoberfest), they couldn't adjust independently when their economy needed it. They can also relatively devalue it to make their manufacturers more competitive (at the cost of more inflation on imports and 'beating' the locals to not consume so many, but rather work and export more) There's still heaps of ingenuity here in Australia. It still inhabits the sheds and garages of the nation.

Looks like Germany might thwart EU's plans to ban ICE by 2035.
That mean we'll keep seeing better German v8 tech over the next couple of decades?

The real issue for the US is a lack of refining capacity since covid, there’s been a backlog of maintenance shutdowns, the refineries that are online are working flat out. The other point is for all the talk of shortages because of embargos on Russian oil, there are not shortages in fuel supply, just higher prices which benefits all those already rich oil companies…. The American right’s indignation regarding lack of government action on inflation is counterbalanced by silence or lack of criticism of all those corporates making out like bandits on higher prices…..where is the condemnation of their own financial contributors…. It comes down to this, in a free market, how much can a government really do to control prices set by independent businesses, how far could a government go without crossing a line… Last edited by jpd80; 26-06-2022 at 10:29 AM. |
