Have tinting. When driving in the sun, the difference is noticeable. Wind the window down and feel the sun on your arms. Wind the window up and feel the effect of the tint. It's fantastic.
Worth it. |

There is also a reflectivity rating....which is interesting given my new tint is more reflective than dark.

My BA fairmont is black and has 3M tint. Looks awesome, black on black. The only thing with window tinting is that yes it stops uv, glare and all that but the heat that enters the cabin has a harder time getting out because of the film on the inside of the window. I have seen data showing cabin temps in summer and it showed a tinted car took longer to get hot and it was slightly cooler than the non tinted car but as the end of the day came the tinted car stayed like an oven for heaps longer compared to the non tinted car. I don't know how true this is. Has anyone else heard this theory?????
I don't care if it was 20 deg. hotter in summer tint looks the goods and I'll have it everytime |

I think that theory would be about right blown ba, but if you wind the windows down before you go and drive with em down for a while the car will cool down fairly quicky anyhoo. I have dark tint (i think its darkest legal?) and I also have a granny sun visor hat thinggo. It might not look fantastic, but these sun hats are great. no sun on the hands when driving and keeps a lot off the face etc. the only time i have a drama is in the evenings driving towards the sun, but apart from that its good. Anybody got a sun hat on their AU - ba? havent seen many but they exist.

**** yeah, I drove my ef around in the warmer months in brisbane and also had a pending Townsville trip ahead of me, so I bit the bullet and got em done. bought the granny visor in townsville that made a difference, not the coolest mod, but it helps a lot. sunnies are good in the arvo or when driving in towards the sun etc. also a dash mat helps reduce glare as well.

Tinting is a must I think for the Australian climate, just to preserve the interior a little longer.
It also makes the car look a lot better too... :

Window tinting becomes a safety issue when you can't make eye contact with the driver, whether as another driver or a pedestrian. I suppose its useful for ugly people to hide behind. I have it on my bedroom.

my xr8 had it done by the previous owner including the sunroof (open it whilst driving and you can blend the arm tan out on the left arm : ) all my cars have had it. you can notice the difference without it :

SA tint rules are front windows must let min 70% light throught rear windows '' '' 35% '' '' this effectively means no tint film on front doors all other states are 35% all round NSW comercial vehicals (van , etc) 35% front doors , no limit behind front doors. no tinted windscreens exept for a band across the top which does not come lower than the wiper sweep. ------*******--------******------- another thing to consider when buying tint is that there are 2 ways of thinking about darkness...... the transport department way , which is simply the % of measured visible light transmitted through the film (--%VLT) the way most normal people think , which is the appearence when you look at the window. the appearance can vary hugely and still have the same %VLT rating. a lot of tint shops will call any 35%VLT film the darkest legal film available. can be very decieving although not technicaly lying. best bet is to shop around and collect good size samples,( offcuts are only put in bin anyway so if they wont give you a sample ,ask yourself what are they hiding.) when you have your samples ,lay them together on a piece of white paper to easilly see the darkest appearance. : i hope that this helps someone

Factory tint.
I really hate it when I see old tint that has bubbled. Apparently, there's a lifetime warranty against that with many tints. |

there are very few products that you can buy which have that kind of warranty. if the tint does fail it is not that hard to get off , especialy if you remove it before it gets too bubbly. allways amuses me when people will spend thouands to repaint without a complaint but winge about spending a couple of hundred to replace old tint that has protected them and their cars interior for the last 10-15 years , proberly saving them 4 grand for a new interior or from having their arm covered in skin cancer. P.S. i am not having a go at you " Bill-R"

When you think about it though a lifetime warranty really only means the product is guaranteed to last as long as it lasts

some only cover the product and you need to pay the labour for the replacment, some require you to return each year for an inspection, some need to have the original purchace invoice for a claim. i think that the 3M company have the most complete warranty system. also there are a lot of cheap tints coming from Korea now that claim to have lifetime warranty. problem i see there is that there is no conection to the manufacturer and the warranties are offered by the importers.....= warranties start rolling in and the importer just closes that company name and start a new one ...= no more warranty.

There's only one thing that trumps window tint, venetiants!
I've got a VC Valiant with venetiants on the back window, it looks hot. |
