Type BOMDAS into google and see what happens. You have the correct answer but you've used the incorrect formula to obtain it.

I've noticed everyone who has come up with 2 has put an invisible set of brackets around 2, isolating 48 from the rest of the equation. This is wrong. As others have stated; you work from left to right.

Answer as written is 288.
If it were written 48/(2(9+3)) answer is 2

Because you are making an extra equation. The 48 is divided by the product of (9+3)x2 ie 24, therefore the resultant is 2

It's not an extra equation, I am breaking one equation into
two(as stipulated by the brackets).

BOMDAS etc aside... once the 'bracketed' sum is done shouldn't you just work from L--->R

ie:-
48/2 (9+3)
48/2 *12
24*12
288

?????????

Yes exactly, I thought you were using BOMDAS in literal sequence like a few others in thread have done. Glad to see we are on the same page.

Which is were I think it is wrong. based on my teachings.

Yes, work the brackets out - (9 + 3) = 12,
you then get 48 / 2*12
results in 48 / 24
equalling 2

Disregard.
It's one of "those" equations. Really irritating and whilst not specifically hard to
solve, it's a pain when two people have an answer and disagree.
Still, 48/2 is 24(do this first) then of course 24(12) is 288. Bam I am SO right

You're good up until the second part...you're working right to left, you need to work left to right.

but multiply and divide ( same as plus and minus) are equal.... so after the brackets, any expontents etc you revert to left to right

notating 2(9+3) is the same as notating (2(9+3))

so therefore

48÷2(9+3) is the same as 48÷(2(9+3))

Brackts first the answer is 2.....who ever thinks it is 288 is WRONG

I'm a Mathematics Lecturer so believe me.

since there is no sign between the 2 and the (9+3) when the turns into 12 it cant just be 2 12 can it?.... so it is 2(12) and you would need to do that first to get rid of the bracket completely rather than dividing the 48 in half first

extra brackets dont need to be there. the 2 is only applicable to whats inside the bracket and is a small equation on its own.

Rule 5 : Brackets :

(a) A number immediatly outside a bracket means that everything inside the bracket gets multiplied by that number

everything i learnt through calc, g&t etc was as nc1183 is saying =\

The brackets are gone the moment you do the 9 + 3.

you are then left with 48 ÷ 2 x 12

..order of operations states left to right.

...my dads a maths B teacher and he says although its a very ambiguous question, from the way its written, then answer is 288.

I'm a third year mech engineering post grad, but that has nothing to do with it, i would have had the exact same answer in grade 11 as i do now.

288.

Why is it then, that my calculator, no matter which way i enter it, either 48/2*(9+3) or 48/(2(9+3)) still equals 2.
