I don't disagree with the strikes but let's be honest, if the roles were reversed that would be definitely be considered an act of war. The US military has attacked another foreign military's assets. There are already questions about the legality of it all both US and international.

The whole situation is a lot more complicated by the fact that Assad won't walk and definitely won't while he has Russia backing. If he didn't have that backing he would at best be ousted at worst be dead already.

I can't help but think that as an effect of this strike, the US is feeling out Russia's alliance with Assad.

This could also be construed as a continuation of Obama's (as agreed with the UN) policy:

Quote:
Mr Obama, who was a vocal opponent to Assad’s use of chemical weapons, ended up sending a specially-equipped US naval ship to destroy the Syrian President’s chemical weapons after the UN Security Council backed a US-Russia deal in 2013 to remove and destroy the arsenal.

The agreement was brokered as a way to avert US missile strikes that Washington threatened after a chemical attack near Damascus, which Washington and other Western governments blamed on the regime.
Perhaps they were given a 'do this again and reap what you sow' kind of ultimatum?

One thing is clear. Trump is very hypocritical or is at least is the wiser about the differences between his opinions as a citizen versus being a president. Because on this point he has done a U turn. No fake news about it, the evidence is obvious.

I will give him credit in that he gave a heads up to all parties and more importantly Russia because had Russian military assets and/or personnel been hit it would escalate tensions a lot more.

Don't worry what was said or took place in 2013, completely and utterly useless now.

Current battlefield is different than in 2013...

Circumstances have changed, and hazardously.

I agree but the hypocrisy has to be noted.

In Australia and the US, this would be a no brainer, the prime minister or president would be gone already.

The thing is coalition forces must learn from the past and not oust a leader despite what they think about them and bomb the **** out of everything without any thought as to what happens next.

The safe flight agreement between the US & Russian air forces over the skies of Syria has been now suspended over night by Russia.

The next few weeks will show were this whole mess is going - i hope/pray things dont get esculated.

Quietly, Devin Nunes stood down amidst this US Syrian action, good timing or coincidence?

cheers, Maka

Here is a clue for DJT, when you've got Hillary, Ryan and McCain praising you for 'your' decisive action in Syria, then you should know you've done a very big error. There is no proof as to who used the chemical weapons, it could have been Assad or it could have been 'the rebels' - who knows?

But to go in and attack a sovereign country without informing/gaining approval from congress, this exactly the dictator characterization the lefties gave you.

You've go many domestic promises stalled, build the wall that proves a little difficult, control the borders - nope a halfwit leftie judge from Hawaii can stop that, purge Obamacare - not ready yet. But organize a military strike on Syria, 24 hours, 36 hours tops. This really does expose the way the American system works.

Heres something to think about, the same date that DJT bombs Syria, 100 years to the date, is when the USA entered WW1. Who says history doesn't repeat itself?

Reports on CNN proof Asad used chemical weapons debate has moved onto were Russians complicit.

This is nothing more than a warning. Asad still in control and capable of handling ISIS. The move tests Putin too.

So much for the theory Trump is Putin's man.

This is a chess game and the Generals are calling the shots with Trump responsible.

Most of you forget the US has the capability to fight wars separately against china and Russia and win, they are the superpower.

So what if China and Russia get together ?
I was always taught that if America said it has 12 planes and 6 boats, it has 12 planes and 6 boats.
But if China says it has 12 planes and 6 boats, it hasn't. It has a hell of a lot more.............

Donald did let Congress know after letting Russia know, also something under a section 2 that allows a US president to act as commander in chief to act independent of the US Congress.

Previous US presidents have over the last 20 years used the same presidential powers when needed according to multiple news outlets reporting on it now on the net.

cheers, Maka

Agree with almost everything accept the last few words.

There is ZERO guarantee the US can win a full blown war against Russia. Russia has just as many Nuclear weapons as the USA, albeit in slightly different forms, and with equal ability to deliver them on a global basis.
The last SALT treaty insured this balance.

As for a conventional ground war, depends where it was. Russia has its muscle already in Europe, America has to get its forces there.

Since WW2, the USA has not fought a war against an opponent as strong as itself, it has always had way better / superior capability, a miss match in capability.

Such a hypothetical event could be like last years AFL grand final !

A favourite, yes, an under dog yes, but guarantee as to who will win.

Take a leaf out of JFK's book and wait until real evidence comes in.

It is the one way the rebels could draw Trump in. I'm not saying it has happened that way but think about it. Rebels wait in town with a small amount of Sarin. Syrian planes eventually come to bomb town, rebels release Sarin, take photos of kids, blame Assad and bingo - you have Trump on your side.

Way too easy.

Trump should have waited for independent examination - which he may have done, we don't know.

One thing for sure....we will learn a lot more about the man over the next few weeks. Putin is NOT happy.

Unless this is all posturing. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Putin was contacted prior to the strike and assets were moved from the airfield before they threw $100mill of ordnance at it. Apparently the airfield was in use shortly after the strike.

Putin looking like he has his jimmies rustled, sends in a couple of ships. Talks go on and as an agreement to not start WWIII, US lifts sanctions on Russia.

Smoke and mirrors if you ask me.

Looks like he's got another one up his butt, and he's so ever excited about it.

The guy has no control over himself or the establishment.

God forbid some ******** like Trump having an impact on us!

That was the question in the original thread, was it not?

Much has changed in 40 years. No military buff would have an issue with what I said, but as you point out no guarantee. Obviously, talking conventional warfare.

Surpring that Trump is receiving more critiscm from the right than left least it appears that way to me.

If it turns out that the decision was on emotion and not tactical then It's going to be a long 4 years.

CNN is completely biased for the left and you know it. We all do.

The fact that they present themselves as fair is the issue. No one is having a bet each way. It was basically 1 Syrian gives a counter view to what the presenter expected. Fair point from coupe. No credit to CNN there.
