And on the note of a Ranger 2.0L 4 cylinder vs the 3.2L 5 cyl...for anyone that has gone from a 5 to 4 cyl engine will know that the smoothness and all round better refinement is not to be underestimated. When you switch between the two a few times in the same day it becomes so noticeable and much more comfortable when driving for extended periods. It's also one reason I really enjoy our V6 diesel Territory which is smoother again.. |

Today I had the opportunity to drive the Raptor. I will say from the beginning that dual cab pickups aren’t really my thing. They just don’t suit me needs as a working tool of trade or as a recreational / fun car. But after driving it I can totally understand why someone would absolutely love this thing.
The level of cabin refinement was hugely impressive and the seats exceptionally comfortable, as was ride quality. I could see this being a very easy car to do long distance touring in. I also really liked the steering wheel with shift paddles and the rather pointless red position indicator strip. The engine has unquestionably been a controversial tropic but, frankly it suits the character of the vehicle, is much more refined than the old 3.2 I5 and is toey enough when the foot goes down, the gearbox doing a great job of tapping into the engines reserve of torque. Look, its not a firecracker of an engine (although that is probably a skewed comment owing to the fact I had just jumped out of 10 speed Mustang GT) but it is NOT a deal breaker. You can feel the weight hiding under this vehicle though and those chucky tires make themselves felt through corners but this a fun and entertaining vehicle to drive, and as I said, I totally understand the appeal. For anyone who has doubts about this car, go to your local dealer and take one for a drive. If you then still don’t like it fine, but from someone who doesn’t really like/need these type of vehicles, I couldn’t get the smile off my face.

I got to sit in one today, loved it. Love the whole look. The interior is mega, loved the blue stitching, much more appealing than Wildtrak. Shocks look phat.
I don't want to tow a train, and expect she'd be a bit steady off the mark. See what next year brings, I think they're a really good thing! Ed

Yet to see one myself as well. Plenty of people in normal rangers (and the like), who are clearly compensating for something

I've seen two.. they look far smaller in the flesh than they do in photos. But still way more imposing than a regular ranger.

What am I compensating for? Other than 4x4ing through the middle of the country, or the high country, towing capacity(tradies trailer most days or caravan or ski boat on weekends), tool storage,(canopy) and still taking the kids to footy etc in reasonable comfort.

I've seen a few out and about, they certainly catch your attention with their wide body look and tuff stance, awesome looking vehicles they are.
I envy those that have purchased one. |

Using that logic the Raptor is a waste of time and money. 99% of Raptor owners won't be jumping or driving 170 through the desert.

Finally seen my first 2 raptors over the weekend, admittedly looked good on the road having said that I've also seen plenty of well done wild tracks also, out of curiosity I'd love to drive the 2.0 to see how it is. I can see the visual attraction it has, local dealer has it for sale for $80 grand..... For me personally as I don't need a duel cab I reckon I'd drop that onto a stang and keep the change.

Probably not super relevant to the Ranger Raptor - but there is a review out of the USA on their specification Ranger:
Comes only with 2.3L Ecoboost and 10sp auto - 205KW. He does talk about no Raptor for the USA. |

Look at those 21st century tail lights on the American Ranger. How modern.
I'm going to assume new Australian Rangers have bed lights. I also want a window between the cab and tray. More utes need this. |

There are clearly a lot of subtle changes that could be done to keep Ranger right up to date with the competition but something tells me USA Ranger was special case with the good changes to their Ranger

Doug is certainly impressed by the performance of the ecoboost...
If they made ecoboost an option for ranger here I think I’d get one. Diesel does nothing for me, but I love the look of the rangers. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

2.3L Ecoboost, 10sp auto, dual cab 4x2 would have me interested, otherwise I'm a fan of the American utes. |

I find it very interesting the stand out feature for the reviewer is its powertrain - in that they all thought it was going to be wimpy because everything else in that same category over there is 6 cylinders, but the Ecoboost Ranger has to be the fastest in its segment.

with some suggesting that a discounted 2.7 EB F150 SuperCab (more rear room) may be a much better option.... The 2.3 EB in Ranger looks to have a lot of punch and go thanks to bottom end torque and the 10-speed it's gonna open lots of skeptics' eyes wide..... |

So, after doing some googling it appears that a 4x4 ranger is only 2-300kg heavier than an ecoboost mustang?. (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong there)
The us spec ranger has 40hp less than a mustang eb. An eb powered raptor would have been a cracker. Then there's the fast growing aftermarket support for the eb internationally. |

Closer to 500kg (with our diesel model) depending on spec. Would the petrol engine reduce the weight that much?

0-96kmh in 6.9 seconds is pretty impressive. I'd be happy with 8-9 seconds in a 4x4 vehicle. I like V6 diesels, but this ecoboost seems pretty impressive. Rear discs and rear springs sounds good to me. I like the idea of a ute that is a little smoother. I have no intention of carrying a tonne in the tray so I'd rather a smoother ride everyday . |
