I've no doubt that is correct. The reality is that the vaccines were fast tracked by at least a couple of years compared to normal processes and that to some extent all the early uptake was experimental.

Is this ideal? Absolutely not and while I doubt that the side effects (including the fatal ones) were ever going to be completely avoidable it has set a potentially dangerous precedent for the next pandemic that comes along where we may not be so lucky in how safe these vaccines have proven to be.

What is certainly beyond any reasonable doubt is that the vaccines saved lives. It would have been devastating globally if the case mortality rates had stayed where they were in 2020 but even if we look at our own country it's startling:

If the 2020 pre-vaccination CMR of 3.049% had continued unchecked then Australia would have recorded 347,633 deaths to date and not the 19,373 we've had.

Globally the vaccines are claimed to have saved circa 20M lives although my data is a bit more conservative and says that if the global 2.315% CMR of 2020 had continued then 15.37M people would have died instead of the 6.7M to date. Either way, it's a lot.

Anecdotally, it appears that we've largely come to believe that the pandemic is 'over' or at least controlled as witnessed by the poor take-up of the current vaccine offer, the removal of shields in a lot of retail environments and the fact that you hardly see anyone wearing a mask now in public.

I'm not quite sure that's right. All of the AU state trend lines are heading back upward as we head into the winter months and the last 4 weeks have averaged 120 deaths per week after being below 100 for several weeks and while that's still well below the 270/week of a year ago, it is still trending the wrong way.

India has gone from averaging ~100 cases a day back in Jan-Feb to averaging 8,000 cases a day over the last 4 weeks and other countries coming into winter months are showing similar trends.

Might be too early to call how this winter season will be here but we're having another jab anyway.

Default Re: Covid 19 -

While it looks like global case numbers are declining, part of the reason is that a number of countries have stopped reporting or have extended reporting periods out to fortnightly or even monthly - it's why there is such a big gap between the case numbers reported last week (338k) and the amended total for that week now (417k) which is quite a big disparity.
If we add back in the ones that seem to have stopped reporting altogether at their weekly average prior to when they stopped, there are at least another 60k cases per week not being reported at all and that's probably conservative.
