Ok. I've made my choice.
I've sat back defending the Falcon. And in my opinion, rightly so! Saw an Omega this morning, and boy oh boy, what a piece of crap! Sure, the interior is ok, but the exterior looked crappy crap crap! The body just looks uncoordinated and awkward, the rear lights actually do resemble a 380, and the flared guards looked ridiculous! If I was ever going to join the Holden bandwagon, this was going to be the car. Pity that it's not. The BA/F looks outdated in comparison, but I like it. And in the final analysis of me purchasing a car, that's all that matters! Holden may have a good car (because it is!), but I don't think much of the look of it. Where'd I park my bike? |

Have a read of the latest (Sept 06) copy of Wheels magazine... I think it will answer a lot of questions posed in this thread (eg fuel economy). It is also an accurate assessment of the VE series.
I think it will cause Ford to look critically at what they are currently working on as the next generation series, just so they know where the bar is currently located and how much higher that bar can be moved by Holden through the VE model life. And how much Ford will need to do to stay ahead of the game. I'm sure a lot of you have driven Commodores at some stage in your driving life, so what I will say is this - the new VE blows the VT-VZ series (including HSV) into the weeds. Don't believe me? Try it for yourself! :eclipsee_ And it will give you a good indication on what Ford (and Toyota and Mitsu) will need to produce to be in the ballpark. And that can only be good for us, the driving public. |

Well making my own judgement as i yet havent done so regarding holdens new VE range and i must admit there sure getting the message across cause all this fuss there causing are really stepping up the competition to another level for its competitors and for the australian car industry!
The VE doesnt look too bad at all it has a very ripped and agile sort of look to it especially at the front of it but im finding it abit hard to accept the look of the rear of the vehicle. I think some of the bits like the vents and spoilers well more with the hsv range seems more of an aftermarket product then a holden product. The interior sure looks like the goods i believe on par with the ba interior but with abit more detailed features something i wouldnt mind seeing in the ford range. Without trying to cause a uproar here i do so abit of mazda styling especially with its rear taillights and also some few hints of BA and mitsubishi cues as well. One very noticeable change they seem more compact but more or less does seem like a step up from there previous model. Bottom line i think i give the VE the thumbs up but im more then happy with the ford offerings at this time just looking very forward to there next model. |

Even with that wheels article there is inconsistency with what has been said in other reviews.

A v.good result for the Falcon considering its the "older" of the 2, i wonder if the update might square it away?, certianly sounds like there isnt much in it...

Yeap Im loving the closeness of the tests. The commodore only wins on things any new model should.
Good to see the Ghia get a good wrap too, although I thought they were a bit harsh on its ride, its a good comprimise IMO; perhaps the VE's better steering had something to do with it. Even thats a shock, commodore and good steering in the same sentence.....

Very close indeed. The Falcon in its current state is getting old, but still gets good rating against the brand new Commodores.

Went to the local Holden dealer today fo a quick look, checked out the Omega sitting in the yard. The first thing I noticed was the overall fitment of trims & panels was poor for brand new 21st century car, for example the splash shields in the wheel arches didn't match up well against the guards, the plastic sill panel trim which ends at the bottom of the wheel arch looked like it was deformed, trim around the door windows didn't fit properly.
As for the billion dollars they spent I don't think what we have seen so far is what all of the money was spent on, I think there is more to come from Holden which is included in the development cost. |

Total laugh really, wouldnt wanna go thru a decent amount of water in one, might start floating.
Holden must really be dissapointed, when Ford released the BA all the motoring journos praised it and said it walked all over the VY, same went for its entire life asside from the V8's. Now Holden has the VE yet the journos reckon the BF is nearly as good, if not better due to its motors and sophisticated gearboxes. I thought i knew which one id take out of the 2, the VE, but now im having second thoughts.

Like most here I'm a Ford fan, but I still appreciate a good car. The VE is okay, but not a clear 4 years better than the BA.
I doubt Holden will be dissapointed, they seem to believe their own hype as far as I can tell. I'm sure it will clearly outsell the BF and BFII though, which is a bit of a shame considering how close they are in quality.

There is a real Holden following, with many people being bandwagoners. Everybody has heard of a Monaro...but who has heard of a Falcon GTHO or XC Cobra? I said that once everybody gets over the "oohh, new Holden, pants jizz" phase, the real assessments will enter. The Commodore may be a superior car (given it is a generation ahead), but I think it looks crap. Full stop. The Falcon, although outdated, for me it looks better and considering it is a gen behind, puts up a damn good fight. |

I love how much Holden hyped up the huge quality gains, but numourus test cars have had poor fiiting trims and in this test vibration problems. Seems like saying it and doing it are 2 different things. :

Holden should be praised, however, for the Saab-like blackout button, which darkens all but the speedo when driving at night, so you can better focus on the road ahead
My 93 Magna has this feature, hardly revolutionary. |

AS I said, I think Australians love their Holdens more. The "Australia's own car" slogan back a long time ago did a lot it seems.
I get the same ****ing "Found On Rubbish Dump" a lot, but how much better do XW-XC Falcons look than Holdens of the same era? People will buy it not because it's a great car...it's decent, but not great...they won't buy it because it is "superior in every way to the Falcon" (note: sarcasm)...they will buy it because it is a) A HOLDEN (undies jizz!) b) It's NEW! (Well...if it's new, it MUST be good!) and c) People are gullible fools...they'll watch Billion Dollar Baby and believe every word stated, although it's clear Holden wanted to air it and increase the range of advertising. Ford have never needed that as it's always been confident in its motor vehicles and how they perform...not the fairy bull**** attached! |

Well I took a VE SS for a spin yesterday... My opinion of it is High, but it does have some dab traits.... Firstly I drvoe the 6sp auto version. I can not compare it to latest XR8 due to the fact I own a 5sp manual. But the differance is overwhelming in favour toward the Commodores 6sp auto being the faster of the 2... Handling for a stock SS is incredible for such a large car and the ride is quiet smooth, no complaint from me.. As you know Holden stuck the battery in the boot, but they also repositioned the motor. They moved right back and lowered it 2 inches. It is actualy quiet impressive how they have done, and will elliminat alot of understeer.. Also to improve handling they have again reposition the fuel tank to be in front of the rear axel. This will reduce alot of oversteer when exiting corners. Over all the SS feels very positive when driven through the twisties..
More later, I have to go |
