At BHP Billiton, our vision for sustainable development is to be the company of choice - creating sustainable value for shareholders, employees, contractors, suppliers, customers, business partners and host communities.

Central to our vision is our aspirational goal of Zero Harm to people, the environment and the community.

Further to this, our people are our most significant asset and number one priority and therefore Zero Harm drives all our operations.

A demonstrated commitment to health and safety leadership is a prerequisite for being considered for any opportunities or career advancement within the business.

Nickel West Mt Keith is located 460 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie in the Northern Goldfields.

Nickel West Mt Keith is a surface mining operation with an open pit and concentrator plant. The operation is surrounded by pastoral stations with the nearest townships being Leinster and Wiluna.

There's plenty to keep you entertained in the Mt Keith Village. Take the heat off the day and head to the pool or join in a game of footy. BBQ dinners are regularly held as well as a range of other social activities including movie nights. Employees commute to and from Perth on a fly in/fly out roster or from regional areas on a drive in/drive out roster.

Employees at Nickel West Mt Keith have an active role in developing and maintaining the systems and procedures to ensure safety, production and a continuing high standard of operations.

This is a great opportunity to become part of a global leader. We will be offering a competitive salary package including 11.5% superannuation, staff incentive bonus plan and a range of company benefits.

Successful applicants will undertake a comprehensive training program whilst enjoying great working conditions on a 2 and 1 fly in/fly out roster just a short flight from Perth (7 Days, 7 Nights, 7 Off).

You will be working as part of the Mining Production team who are committed to Zero Harm and the achievement of production targets.

Mandatory prerequisites include:

• Open Western Australian Driver's Licence; and

• Sound previous employment history (2 years, full time).

Desirable:

• Fly in/fly out experience; and

• Previous heavy machine operation or transport industry experience.

Short listing for this position will commence on 9 September 2011, however we do reserve the right to close this position earlier than stated.

Alright sweet how do I apply?

I don't think I'll get in though, as I don't have an open license, I'm a stage 2 P plater here in Vic, its 4 years for Ps here.

I sent my resume off to that HR lady linked earlier in the post, no reply :'(

Im a diesel fitter and ive worked on mines before, the best way to get into mine work with no experience is to do shutdowns with labourhire companies, ie skilled engineering etc.
I have worked with people who went straight from being taxi drivers to t/a.
Unfortunately most of my mine work was done as an apprentice on crap wages so i never really saw the benefits and now cant bare the thought of 12 hour days with alcohol as your only friend and an empty donger to look forward to
I think the hardest part of the mine lifestyle is staying out of the wet mess and alot get nowhere because of it.

A donger is the self contained room you stay in whilst onsite and the wet mess is the pub.

VERY easy trap to fall into as the wetty is usually on the way to or from the dry mess (kitchen/meals area)

Two beers per person per night if you are lucky...remember all mine sites have a 0.00 Alcohol policy...and you will be tested.

I got a call on my home phone today from Workpac and Mum took the call (I was at work).

When I get in the door:

DID YOU APPLY FOR A JOB IN QUEENSLAND?!?!?!

Anyways I rang back and they said I missed out on a position because I applied after the cut-off date and better luck next year.

Anyone here know any dumpies and what its like doing the job? Ultimately thats what I'm interested in.

im only in it for the money, it isnt bad work but isnt good either, if you have a good crew and supervisors it helps alot, management at most places are a bit different, but yeah, i dont want to be doing this for ever, but the way the cost of living is these days its looking more likely.

What do they mean when they say "FIFO ex Perth", I know FIFO is "fly in fly out", ex Perth? Does that mean they only fly you to and from Perth Airport?

Another position which looks OK is field assistant.

Which labour hire mob in particular vanman?

I'm currently at a minesite around 130klm from Mackay ( don't want to name the mine but I work about 50klm from the Junction just off Suttor Development rd) working as a maintenance plumber with UGR but wouldn't mind a change and was thinking of trying my hand in an operator role, specifically dump truck.

Been at this job for just on 5 years, so I suppose you could say I have 5 years experience in the mining industry, although I don't actually do too much out in the pit other than unblock toilets at crib huts and fix leaky taps on dragline sinks. lol

Only ever seen one camp employee in that time get a job as an operator on this site and nobody from my dept has ever got a start either, despite many of the guys applying several times. Apparently something to do with not wanting to poach from different departments as it is frowned upon by the corporation who runs the mine.

Some of the tickets I have are as follows:
New Standard 11 open cut generics done 3 weeks ago, current c/board medical, confined space, working at height, tickets for forklift and EWPs as well as black coal comps in backhoe, operate medium vehicle, operate heavy ridgid vehicle ( truck), operate support equipment (Skid steer loader).

I have put in for unexperienced operator jobs on the site I wok on but never got a go as of yet.

I've also got a science degree ( like that matters LOL).

So give me the inside goss on which labour hire mob I need to annoy on a daily basis!

Are there any mines in Tasmania? I'd prefer to go there, more bearable temperature I reckon.
