Will certainly be interesting to see how this Falcon sells. I personally wouldn't buy one as I do like my V8's. What it does show however is Ford's current commitment to the Falcon platform by trying to look at as many markets as possible. With this, LPI, NA, turbo and V8 options you can't complain that Ford haven't tried to meet all the possible market options. My next purchase will be a new Ranger hopefully next month so I will still be flying the blue oval flag.

I actually have a good feeling about this Falcon...,if it sells it's another excuse to keep rear wheel drive alive!
I am interested and WILL be test driving when released.

I dont see a Turbo 4Cyl being as reliable as the good old 4.0l NA Straight 6.

It better be, it's going into like a gazillion Fords all around the globe....
1) the reason why FoA is getting it so cheap
2) the reason why Holden can't afford to do a copy...

If they ran the same transmission and vehicle weights the Engine A car would always win a drag race against Engine B car.
using the accepted formula of Nm = (kW x 9554) / rpm

At 5000 rpm Engine A would be producing 334.39 Nm of torque (down from the 360Nm at 4000 rpm - past its peak torque)
At 6000 rpm Engine B would be producing 334.9 Nm of torque (up from the 300 Nm at 5000 rpm - at or still approaching peak torque)

What makes Engine A such a sure thing?

Only if your talking 1990s tech...it's a stigma that Ford will have to overcome.
Alternative to diesel would be a good line...

Wouldnt a Turbo Diesel be more reliable by that reasoning

Because engine A does 0-100 kph in 7.6 seconds while engine B takes a second longer?

The names of the two cars have been changed to protect their identities...

i dont think they would be to bad, all you have to do is drive a ecoboost mondeo (basically same engine with a smidgen less power and torque) to realise it will give good enough performance. i figure a big rwd car that will seat 4.5 adults comfortably with the economy of a small car cant be a bad thing. sure its no xr6 turbo but if you want a xr6 turbo then buy one instead.
small capacity, high compression + turbo really is the way of the future, will it do 300,000+km? well time will tell but we will find out soon enough

If Holden wanted to go down the 4 cyl path they could always stick this into the Commodore.

That was the engine Holden was researching 2-3 years ago but couldn't get the costs to work,
IIRC they actually had two mules up and running in VE bodies, were pretty punchy by all reports..

It's also the engine available in Buick Regal and hopefully, Malibu when it gets to Australia.

I had to drop a 3.0 Omega back to a rental outlet today and drove an FG back to work.
jeez.....I really think the little Holden is going to feel the pinch when Ecoboost arrives...

You guys wondering if a turbo 4 cylinder engine is going to last... Mitsubishi have been making 4 cylinder turbo engines since the 80's. The 4G63T in the Evo line of cars would easily do 300,000kms+ unmodified.

Sounds to me like the gear ratios & diff gearing are just more suited to the engine characteristics of engine A, rather than any "natural" superiority of engine A.

i think that the new falcon will not have the reliability or the power of the straight six. i reckon it first models of this car will have a few bugs that will need to be worked out.

possibly although whilst it is new to falcon, it isn't a new engine, so bugs have been ironed out long ago.

I for one hope you continue supporting Ford by purchasing a new I-6 Falcon every few years.
i understand that there aiming for a new market with it. but we both know that ford will drop the I-6 eventually and a 4cyl falcon will be the only one on the menu.
the only cars i buy are fords

ebwolf does have a point, i cant imagine a Straight 4 Ecoboost Turbo being used for the Fairmont or XR(4?)

And now they are not doing a V8 option anymore what choice to performance junkies have? None...

I hope they dont turn out like Toyota, where the only performance car is a Sportivo Camry/Carolla :(

it will be like any engine though, the performace workshops around the country will be able to get the hands on it and churn out some bigger numbers. thats the beauty of a turbo motor, put on a big exhaust, intercooler, wind up the boost instant horsepower

the turbo v6 motor in the taurus in the usa seems to be able to offer pretty decent performance so hopefully they would use that. ford has shown the australia does love a turbo 6 cylinder so hopefully they wont forget this.
