Hybrid fibre coaxial. The former pay TV bundled coax lines strung from pole to pole, split off to your external wall box.

Nah, most (old) Telstra lines in Lake Albert are from the power poles.

That’s really old-school!

Did they leave the dialling handle inside the house, so as to minimise confusion?

Still on copper pairs here. The informal advice from Telstra is that our “absolute last date to change” of 19th July 2021 will come and go without event - apparently massive equipment shortages still plague this mode of NBN delivery.

NBN .... pffft.
I had a week in Newman (WA Pilbara) last year.
Between 5 and 10 pm the internet is non-existent due to farcebook, streaming etc.
So I had a whinge to Telstramoron.
They said 'it's not us - it's them, and them (NBN) has said there isn't a problem, there's never been a problem, and there'll never be a problem, so there's nothing we can / should do'.
Yeah right.
That town produces a zillion dollars in revenue a year and this is okay ?

Uploads are stuffed in Australia.

Someone eventually has to upload.

Australia is the weakest link worldwide.

Good news. The fastest download speed is now over 300 mb..
Still waiting for the wireless NBN to come on line - found I was in 5G territory so now I’m connected via 5G!
Telstra 5G modem. All green lights so good signal. Who would have guessed? Long live NBN.

Having said that still no issues with my FTTN.

On HFC with Telstra, who have done a "free" upgrade for six months.

Fast.com reports 270Mbps down / 110Mbps up (which seems a weird result)
Speedtest.net reports 191Mbps down / 20Mbps up (which is closer to specifications)

I think there is some real competition coming over the horizon for the NBN. The price brackets for 4/5G are close enough to have people ditching NBN. In the bush, Starlink is looking promising. Sure, it is more expensive. But, I know of people on the fringe of 3G and outside NBN fixed who would be very happy to move across to Starlink.

starlink is a game changer, have been using it since the 14th april here in central victoria, apart from the small dropouts due to lack of satellites its AWESOME, speeds anywhere from 10-320Mbps, mostly in the 80 to 150Mbps mark, uploads aain from 5-60Mbps, mostly average around the 30Mbps mark

best internet i have ever had, will certainly make country life a serious choice for more people in the future i believe

so you may be aware (others not) of this but they way starlink works is the satellites are set at three different distances from the earths surface the closest ones get the speeds they advertise the middle ones about a third but have triple the coverage and the furthest away ones are middling 3g speeds and get almost total coverage. idea being your service once the network is done should not drop but may get speed fluctuations. IIRC

i believe they have changed that plan recently getting permission to launch a extra 1400ish so 2800ish total between 530 and 560km altitude, this would remove the need for the ones at 1100 and 1500km, they also plan for 7500 at 340km altitude (none of these have been launched to date)

Conduit question…

For the infeed of HFC NBN to the first wall point (where it then goes to the NBN connection box inside the house) - does the conduit have to be exclusive? Or can it share some of its length with Cat6 (for my convenience)?

Never mind that, I’ve allowed multiple conduits. Chase on upper left is HFC in.
Are the wall plates for HFC, to suit Clipsal mechs? Or HPM? I only want my sparky to supply the knowledge, labour and signoff, so I’m buying and loose installing all fittings

Less than twelve weeks post-installation and the HFC incoming signal will not sync, Gateway is running on its integral SIM card. Compared to the prior ADSL2+ service over copper pairs, which apparently needed upgrading to this - what a shambles!

When I went from Optus cable to NBN which is my old foxtel (Telstra) cable I suffered odd dropouts and slow internet speeds sometimes lose the internet for day or so.
My carrier Optus & NBN techs would stuff around doing online checks saying nothing wrong with the system but would concede the odd dropouts with no resolution to the problem.
This went on for a year or two then one day my neighbour was getting his foxtel upgraded which required onsite technician and after talking to him about my experience; this tech had my problem solved in half hour by simply changing the coaxial fittings on the house, lamp post and street pit box.
He said this a common problem plaguing older systems switched over to NBN. To this day my NBN has been great to use.

Helped a mate install Starlink yesterday near Alexandra in Victoria.

Absolutely sensational package.

35Mbps upload has won me....the downloads range between 175 and 320 Mbps...who cares as long as they are 100 plus?

No static IP but at least not triple fire walled with a BS dynamic IP. like Telstra 4G..DynDns works fine.
Also the USB-Cat5 adapter didnt arrive...on back order...so all Wifi for now.

I am definitely getting it...and sticking my finger up at Telstra...forever.

Eleven week old NBN modem replaced today, that was apparently my problem. Tech said he’s replaced a lot lately, citing “storm damage” as progenitor of many failures. During his system tests, a redundant Floptus cable accidentally came off the street pole, falling harmlessly into my scrap wire pile. Eaves 1, Optus 0

I used to be really happy with my nbn 100/40 plan, achieved maybe 80-90% of target.
Was much faster than all my US colleagues.

Then I moved country at the same time as a paradigm shift in USA

Currently I am on AT&T fibre paying for 500/500 getting about 95% of that. I am a heavy user, but I have not seen over 150 dl outside of a test

You won't get anywhere near that with NBN wireless.

I would say a tenth...for both uploads and downloads.

Had a guy with some special device bore a new channel from the pit to the house which allowed cable to be laid. So Internet was fine before NBN. Honestly I've notice no change to the service - it is neither better nor worse then before NBN.
