From the evil empire servers at work.......

While it sounds ok on here, its latency is terrible and its a lot slower to load anything than my home one.

Very constructive post there mate. Especially considering that the post you're replying to is 2 months old.
Could be that the posted didn't realise that the posts above are expensive fibre connections from people's work places, not home grade ADSL connections.

I'm on an old Optus broadband unlimited plan - they don't offer it anymore, plus they advertise the new cable broadband plans as being twice as fast!!!

My download speed was considerably better than average, but my upload speed was considerably less than average....

I don't get it. I'm on ADSL2, and I have good download speeds, yet this test tells me my connection is not all that fast.

Not sure if it will help or not but reset your modem then give it a shot.

Over the past few months my modem has become an issue and I reboot it every few days as it doesn't like it when I try to access online poker and some other of those facebook applications. So you could be onto something. Plus the modem is at least 5 years old, so it's time to go out the window.

Actually today I signed up for Naked DSL, and ordered a new modem, so I will be interested to see how my speeds change.

I'll run the test again once I'm set up on Naked DSL.

Got a new laptop, just checking it out......

The ISP speed doesn't seem to change regardless of your RAM or Processor.

No, unless your old machine is hopeless it won't make a difference.

Pretty good speed you're getting there.

Not so good.
410 Kb/s download and 380 Kb/s upload. Ping is OK I suppose it just shows you how long a packet takes to make a round trip to the server and back. Lower is better but 89ms is expected depending on how many router hops you have to make to get to the server.

You should repeat the test a few times and make sure there is no other activity at the same time like other machines downloading.

What is your ISP plan speed?

If you have a ADSL service you can also query the router to show you line stats which can help to diagnose any performance problems. Lines with high attenuation will have lower speeds.
