In Geelong they have reopened a museum which houses a few of the old cars/display items from the old Ford Discovery Centre. Just went in there today, and they have the EB GT, a cut away of the AU falcon, the exercise bike when you pedal it turns an engine which you can see a cutaway of the insides of it. Also at the moment have the last FGX Falcon made, a white BA GT (with 5speed manual), a miami engine on a stand, a barra turbo engine on a stand with the rocker cover partially cut so you can see inside, a prototype sequential gearbox that was going to go into the BA GT and a lot more... GEELONG MUSEUM OF MOTORING + INDUSTRY and their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/geelongmuseumofmotoring/ Opens on Thursdays through to Monday 10am to 4pm. I've been told it'll be open for the next 3 years at least and see what happens after that. If you're in Geelong - check it out. Its behind Western Heights Secondary College, Building 5, on 23 Waymouth St, Hamlyn Heights. Run by volunteers so please try support this good thing! Last edited by baboon; 03-11-2019 at 05:35 PM. |

This book by Australian designer Paul Beranger contains some great images of the wider Australian automotive design industry.
Mods, I'm not sure if it is ok to display images from this book, ie copyrights, but here is one image of an early AU design.

Another image from the above book that I am quite fond of for obvious reasons, wish I could get a digital version of it.

ford_via_concept_1 Not a Ford Australia concept, but it's Ford concept called Via from 1989. Had to do a double take on the wheels. Now I know where they got the inspiration for the EL XR wheels. |

Is that a Probe derivative, boss?
Looks very similar, including the wheels:

Interestingly enough the car still exists and was recently purchased by Moray Callum, who was one of the original designers. |

Cab forward was a nice idea, but safety rules put a quick end to the concept.
I think the Dodge Neon was the most successful of them.

They advertised their car with a 'cab forward design' but for the life of me never understood what that meant nor was it explained in their ads. After a quick google search I have found the answer.

It's a shame really, knowing that you wont be seeing any incredible concepts coming from within Australian manufacturing.
