Rule 1....Always be nice to the local country town mechanics.
Rule 2....See rule 1. or become proficient at DIY auto repairs. Things take time in the country and if your in a big city hurry move on to the next big city.

I've lived here for 22 years. I'm a relative newcomer. It can take 45 minutes easy to walk from the car to the supermarket, or get out of the post office. My neighbours are the best

Most vans that do not have en-suites are losing a bit of value as everyone wants a dunny in them these days, I don't mind stepping outside! |

Hi Guys,
I used to drive a truck once and remember being in Sydney traffic and seeing the car in front of me with a bumper sticker it said "If you don't like my driving keep off the footpath"! |

I am one of them., was on road full time for 8 months
. From Mt Gambier, Perth , Broom, Darwin and back down the centre to Port Elliott . As with society there’s the have and have nots added to it all . Don’t worry even Reasonable well sorted nomad gets criticised by others also !! Comments like . I bet you sold your house to buy that etc .? Yet their 4WD and caravan prob cost more ? There’s envious attitude on both sides !’ The towns either side of Nullarbor Highway is much the same . Ceduna wasn’t too bad . Perth side seemed full of complaining old bogan locals ? Driving long distances is no problem for me . I’ve recently driven from Fairbanks Alaska to Florida.

last year my wife and myself went on a holiday. We started in Nelsons Bay at a Camping Ground.
After that we went to Coffs Harbour, Murwillumbah, then to Rockhampton which we stayed again at a Camping ground, We don't have a caravan but we did have a big tent. We stayed in a motel in Emerald because it was too hot outside then next day drove to Longreach which we saw the Qantas outback Museum. We left Longreach the following day and went to Mt Isa. The next day we drove 1,100kms to Alice Springs the speed limit in NT is 130kmh. We left Alice Springs three days later at 7am and drove down the Sturt Highway arriving in Cooper Pedy at 2pm. We noticed petrol prices on the Sturt Highway was $2.07 a litre for ULP 91. Then we drove from Cooper Pedy to Port Pirie were my wifes aunt lives stayed there 2 nights then next stop was Hay then home. Ive nearly always gone on driving Holidays as I used to drive for a living for 30 years. |

To me its mostly not worth driving - I generally bum around Adelaide a few times a year and I drive over.
7.5 hours there -1x day of annual leave 7.5 hours back - 1x day of annual leave You lose two days of leave just commuting to/from. Flight on QANTAS is like $150 each way, 1.5 hour flight, depends on how much travelling about the city you want to do but you're not losing the two days of annual leave in transit + fuel. Its significantly cheaper to fly and Uber about rather than drive taking this into account. |

Given say 2 weeks annual holiday your pretty limited if you drive for every vacation. Four weeks obviously farther but I’d rather take a fish hook in my eye than drag something around on my holidays for a week to get somewhere . It’s not my idea of enjoyable driving at this stage of my life. I did a lot of travel when I was young and pre kids, both in OZ and overseas with work. I recall driving out to Leigh Creek from Sydney once in a F100 and trailer as a field repair job. Every crest of a hill I got to I hoped there may be a turn to break the boredom, nope just more straight road, it was mind numbing and I knew we had to turn around and do it all again back home in a few days!
Years ago we flew the family to Canada and hired a camper van, great time, great secenery. It was a fantastic experience but I also loved visiting cities as a family. Enjoy it all boys, life is too short is my motto and air travel is cheaper now than ever. Being financially bound to owning a van and feeling I need to drag it out for every holiday would not be for me at my stage of life, but to each their own I say. Our road trips are 8-10K kms and if I had more time I'd do more. Absolutely zero interest in towing a van or trailer but I'll take all the driving I can get

I live in a small crappy town I don't need to see more of them. Don't get me wrong, I like driving too but when its driveway at home to servo 600km away then another 100km until destination and a whole lot of nothing in between both points aside from small crappy towns and trees it loses its value. |

I think differently though. Last 3 years we've done WA, Uluru, and Darwin. Lots of open spaces and even though the vegetation looks much the same, it's immensely varied. Again though, I like driving through it; I don't want to "live" in it.

Each to there own and whatever floats ya boat....
After flying backwards and forwards to work for over 20 years i am well over it and well over airports, i detest both. It wasn't always like that like most in my younger days it was a big adventure but now a days i would prefer root canal surgery without anaesthetic to flying.....Eg: i will be flying Bundy - Bris - Singapore this Sunday for a course and returning the following Saturday, 3 days after that i will be heading to work, Bundy - Bris - Darwin, and of course back home after work.....the last thing i want to do on Holidays is get on a plane, unless it's an overseas holiday then hopefully i can self medicate () and sleep all the way.... I'm not a city type either, i mostly avoid them like the plague....I love the bush/outback/country towns and have done a fair chunk of Aus and NZ on 4 wheels and a fair bit on 2. We had a Kimberley camper trailer that we dragged all over Aus, had that for 10+ years and put countless miles on it and went places most have never heard of, always had a tinny, kayak, dive and fishing gear etc loaded up, before the camper trailer we always had tents of various sizes for years.....great times... Still got the Landcruiser and a tent, and still head out bush on occasion, but doing more exploring of the coastline around Aus on the boat these days..... You only live once.....

For some people, a trip away is about the journey. For others, its about the destination.
And sometimes, that will change depending on the details of the journey/destination, including the purpose of the trip itself. I remember when the wife and I went on our honeymoon to New York. We decided to do a organised, 2 day, one night trip to Niagara Falls. When we set out, it was all about the destination. But when we got home, we realised that it was actually the journey (spending time to get to know people we would otherwise never have known/met, visiting places along the way that we would otherwise not have considered (such as a winery overlooking the finger lakes, visiting Watkins Glen), etc) that we enjoyed the most. Don't get me wrong, it was nice to visit a destination like Niagara, it was just that the journey ended up being a greater highlight for us than the destination. I was so influenced by our experience (there was only 8 of us on the Ford bus and it was an intimate (if I can use that word) experience) that I seriously considered starting up my own business doing small group bus tours out of Melbourne into Gippsland. When researching that, I was told by numerous people in the tourism business that the Japanese, for example, are all about the destination, and not the journey. To the point that they will, on a trip to Philip Island to see the penguins for example, set up a video camera on the bus to record the scenery of the trip to and from the destination, sleep whilst travelling, and then watch the video when they get back home after their vacation has finished. Personally, that is not something that i would be able to do. But as you guys have said, each to their own.

A couple of years ago, we took a bus trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound, a boat trip on the Sound, and return. A group of Japanese slept all the way there, sat around a table inside eating while on the boat, and slept all the way back. Even when the bus stopped for us to look at the scenery and stuff, they didn't even bother to get off the bus. Why bother going ? I'm sure that they saw and experienced nothing. |
