I wasn't trying to flame up the debate again I was asking whether or not the ACT has power restrictions now?

He said the letter went as far to say they weren't allowed to drive those Daihatsu turbos or whatever they were.

More young attitudes cause carnage.....

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599...1-1702,00.html

Ya have to wonder if this will ever stop. I still think that people with bad attitudes should be idenified during the training process and told to go and grow up before they get a license to drive a weapon, no matter how big the engine is.

Those restrictions are rubbish if i had a dollar for everytime ive seen a p plater driving an xr6t evo or a rex id have one of my own.

the xxxxkw per tonne isnt a bad system the truth of the matter is a 308 VK or torana or a V8 corty will be alot more dangerous than a modern V8 or turbo so its all pretty relative. modern hi po cars are engineered to suit rather than the old muscle style cars which had bad brakes and handling. They should be restricting a car because of its overall properties not because of whats under the bonnet. if the car is well engineered ala BA/BF XR* then go for it just dont put them in a old clapped out VK thats been cable tied together powered by a healthy v8
I have a friend with a VP V6 compared to my BA its a bloody handfull to drive especially in the wet it handles like rubbish and the bias is towards oversteer the more modern cars are a touch more easier to drive and that was only a v6 put an inexperianced driver in a VP SS and game over.

It wont stop. why? Natural selection of course. The idiots die the smart ones live the sad part is when the idiot driver kills their passengers.

Mate, anyone can put on the friendly hat when they take their licence test so that wont work

No way! That would make them overconfident and want to break the road rules. Teaching them how to control the car in a dangerous situation wont save any lives. Speed cameras will save lives. Don't you know that there is a 90% reduction in fatalities at speed camera locations. If we had perpetual speed cameras on our roads there would be 1/10th of the current road fatalities. Besides, if we made the minimum age for getting your licence 25, there'd be zero young driver fatalities on our roads.

Rediculous sugeestions aren't they. Guess what, more than half of the sentences I posted above were spoken by members of the NSW Government. Go figure.

Young drivers will be involved in accidents. You cannot stop it. What you can do, is prevent those accidents from turning into fatalities. Now considering that almost all fully licenced drivers regularly break the road rules, (If you don't, well good on ya. Shame no one else follows your example), you cannot expect P platers to hold the moral high ground. In that case, the most effective way to stop P platers from dying is to put them in safe cars and teach them how to use them in ALL possible situations. Including emergencies.

They can be isolated... Psyc tests these days are very revealing. They cannot be fooled. I have to do one very 5 years for work. There is about 500 questions and it takes about 4 hours to complete. Trust me, you cant fool these things. And at the end of it all your "tester" even knows which side sir prefers to dress.

The idiots can be isolated and treated differently. There will of course be exceptions, like someone goes off the rails later on in life, but we have that now.

i drive on my l's with my mum's xcel and have driven my dads gt twice. you feel 100% more comfortable in the falcon. its so solid, handles great and the brakes are incrediable.
i think if i drove safe in both cars and had an accident in both cars going the same speed then then xcel would leave me worse for ware. my friend has a 89 pulsar and it scares the crap out of me.
maybe p platers shouldnt have high powerd cars but little cars more then 8 years old are so dangerous. i nearly had an accident in my mums car and after that i have changed my mind on getting a litlle car. i would rather drive a 6 that uses more fuel just to feel safer.
after that experience its pretty safe to say i never want to do anything stupid to put myself or others around me at risk. the answer is not to restrict drivers to small eco boxes but to give L platers real life examples of crashes and show they affected people and their families. i never want to leave my parents and family to mourne my death. i have no idea about the laws of act but i suppose its fair since the rest of the country is following this rule of high powerd cars being restricted to p platers.

I disagree. Old cars you feel the speed, modern cars you don't. In the F6 200kph feels like nothing, in the old Vals you certainly know you are doing 200kph! No sound deadening and insulation and all that other crud insulates the driver so much from what is going on around them. Thus the really stupid never really get a sensation of the speed and thus I believe are perhaps even more likely to have a serious accident in a modern car than an older car.

I'll try and see if I can get a copy of said letter up here. I haven't heard anything in the media though lately. Last I heard they were considering introducing the restrictions.

It would seem a somewhat pointless excersise though since the death toll has gone up in other states, I would of thought.

I didnt get my licence till after i was 21 and my attitude was much different than it would have been if i went for it at 17 thats for sure!
i do believe that a lot of performance cars are better equiped to handle the speeds that some people are pulling out of theyre cars. the tin cans young people drive are nothing more than intermediate cars to be thrashed till theyre off theyre P's and can get the car they want.
i know i flogged the crap out of my first car but thats because it was a 88' magna and it used to stick in 1st and well every gear so i cant say i was a speed demon in it.
dunno what tyres were on it but they liked to aquaplane!

Its been said before but I'll say it again mandatory driver defense courses, to be taken when a driver is on their Ls before getting their Ps.

It will build the confidence of unsecure drivers and curb the confidence of the over-confident drivers out there.

I know after a few "experiences" That hapened when I was on my P's were dangerous but I became a better driver because of it. Now why does that have to happen on our streets when it can happen in a controled enviroment and you will be taught how to control it.

The new P plater restrictions are just a bullsh|t bandaid excuse for our goverments to use, the existing restrictions are good enough, I think its 125kw per tonne.
MORE DRIVER ED!

Hey,

I am 18 and have had my p's for a while , buit have been driving on road for about a year all up, and off road at mates houses and private property snce years ago.

I own an EB xr8, and think the power restrictions will have little or no effect. Even the passenger restrictions wont do it. I know what people our age do cause ive seen it backfire twice in less than 3 weeks in my small community.

One of the guys around the corner i know is going to court tomorrow in fact, for 5 charges. He is a p plater of about 4 months.

1 . Drunk driving - 3x over limit
2 . Speeding - double the speed limit in a 60 zone
3 . Failed to present licence
4 . Failed to stop at stop sign
5 . Resisting arrest

Now, he got caught, did no damage to anyone, but the fact he was doing it cause his mates wanted pizza and he was the only one who could drive, is stupid...and reckless. Any reason would ahve been stupid, but this one seemed especially shit. This gives all p platers a bad name, which is why we ahve to put up with bs laws.

In the year ive had my licence, and i drive over 4 - 5 hours a day (most days), to work, with mates in the car, and with mates driving together. I think it would be safe to say i am above average in drivng skill.

Now, my shit does stink because i have had a ticket. I got one 2 weeks ago for speeding. $100 and 1 point for doing 72 in a 60 zone, purely because i wasnt watching my speedo, it was 1am and there was absolutely NOONE around. He looked at my car and told me to stop hooning. I drive around a lot, but thats because i have a passion for driving , tohugh it may waste copiuos amounts of fuel lol. It doesnt mean i "hoon". If i drove around in a little corolla would i still be a hoon? On topic agian...

I dont ever do burnouts. My tyres cost too much, and i dont wanna wreck my car cause i like so see myself as an enthusiast, despite my age or whatever reason. I look after my car, and would rather get out and walk than endanger
others (or my baby EB :P) by doing stupid shit like burnouts and excess speeding (eg 10kms + limit). I do regularly accelerate a bit to the speed limit, but only to hear my car (guilty for noise though! but thats not really endangering anyone...just annoying!) I dont, though, do this in a busy street where there are many people backing out etc.

I do simple basics like give way at round abouts, where i see many "experienced older drivers" neglect to do so. I use the correct lane when going around a roundabout, I drive to suit conditions and i can say without a lie that i barely ever speed. Any speeding i do is like 110 in a 100 zone driving to cairns on a flat fenced road. Speed limits are there for a reason, and if i sped anywhere id regret it - the amount of times ive slammed on the brakes for an "experienced" or "inexperienced" driver alike has been amazing...I dot drive if im tired...cause i did it once jsut down to maccas (like a 1 min drive) and it was like i was easily distracted by everything...like i tohuht about other things other than the road...and can see why people crash cuz of it. I dont drive when i feel tired unless someone needs me for a good reason.

Not taking a stab at older drivers, but i think that some get sloppier when they get older, and take their experience for granted. My mum thinks she is the best driver, and she has never had an accident that is her fault, but the amount of times she has come close, with and without me in the car, are phenomenal. She drives a 2000 suzuki baleno and she drives very recklessly, and she hasnt even got the power under her foot to show off really...she just is impatient.

Cant just drive normally to get milk...has to go 80 in a 60 cause "im experienced enough to know what to do if sometihng happens"

Again, there was the year 12 grad in my town, and there was a car crash. A learner driver with a overloaded car (6 in a 5 seater) and they were all drunk, bar the driver. Whatever the excuse was, they crashed the car (a 4cyl kia rio hatch thingy...soo powerful) into a ditch at 80 k's. 2 were in intesive care and the rest got out luckily with minor scratches etc. I asked one of them why today, as i know him personally, and he just said "we wanted to go home, cause the party was boring."

What the ****?

You risk your lives in the name of boredom. Why?

I just think its shit that I should suffer (should thse power restrictions apply to me, ill die...i asked a police officer when i was RBT'ed if it would, and he said no lol)

I cant go and pick up my girlfriend from parties anymore cause of passenger restrictions. I just have to leave her there, or risk my licence (which i find one of the best privileges i have at my age)

I cant go out for a cruise after a certain time, because some idiot decides hes stoned and has the munchies and drives his mates out to a servo and crashes

I cant drive out to a party, talk to some mates, and drive home because by then, im not allowed to drive...because some people dont pay attention.

Why ruin some of the best years of our lives because of some retards who think they are bulletproof (sounding liek an old guy! :nutsycuck ) I dont see how peer pressure ahs any effect. People CONSTANTLY tell me to bait it up, in some of the stupidest places....carparks...small streets...corners...and i jsut tell them to **** off. I can make my own decisions and i dont see why someone else my age cant.

But wait...we do make our own decisions. Unfortunately, people like making reckless ones. If anything, i tihnk there sohuld be tougher penalties on p platers for breaking certian road rules...namely speeding, or anything that constitutes "reckelss driving". I dont believe that i have to just fit in with the rest of the dickheads...and enjoy drivng around and laughing at fellow past schoolmates of last year on their good behaviour bonds, or at those who are stuck on their last one point cause someone told them to "drop us a skid man!"

I know i sorta went off topic at times here, : but i felt this thread was appropriate to let out my thoughts for this. I feel that us young people can be dickheads, but not all of us do it on the road...and keep it where its nto gunna harm others.

If anything, punish those who are being dickheads harshly, so they dont get to drive. No good behaiviour bonds (pending on what offence) None of that shit where we get like a slap on the wrist for doing a massive burnout and spinning out to almost kill someone driving home from work. The idiots cant drive if they dont got any licence...and if they do, they wont be able to afford fuel afterwards...i hear the fines for that are pretty hefty...

But yeah...i was gunna cut this down a bit to make it more to the point, but i felt leaving it this way would get more of ym raw thoughts down lol. I can see both sides of the story...but i cant see why the majority rules the minority

Idiots versus Onlookers. I like being the latter

lol...so touching...

P.s.
Comments are welcome, as some of what i may have said is offending (not intended to offend at all!! :| ) :

Christ almightly that was a rant....im going to be nailed in the ease of reading department (and relevancy??)!! :

Jishwa....i read your post, it was a good read. I am a P plater as well. But i will refrain from writing a proper response to your post for obvious reasons of starting a Fight with other users. i will simply say that on some point i agree strongly but on others i disagree forcfully.

BTW if you have your P's and New Laws are brought in they shouldnt really apply to you. i got my P's before NSW brought in the Power restriction and i am currently allowed to purchase an 8 or an T6.

definateley know what you mean JiShWa, i dont stuff around in my cars because i dont want to wreck them and not too big a fan of ruining a set of tyres for some smoke and noise then paying for it (either tyres or fine).
i myself got a fine 80 in a 60 zone. cars were crowding both side of the road and i didnt want to get caught between the cars with oncoming traffic and a huge old 4WD behind me. ive seen too many crashes in sydney where 4WD's lock up and just slide into the rear of cars, even at distances my fairlane would pull up in ok.
The police definateley do target P platers heavily because of the idiots out there as i wasnt the only peron to do what i did and i was the only one who got pulled over.
sadly i think we are the minority in the community and government bows to popularity when it comes to rules.
either that or they think because we like cars we are the hoons!

P platers aren't so much a cause of the problem, they are more like a symptom of the problem. Driver attitudes have shifted largely due to the fact that there is no real visible police presence on the roads to deter offenders both P platers and Older.
I have witness unequivocal stupidity from so many people, and I sometimes spend up to 12 hours on the road a day. People are more selfish than before, especially when it means a car may move before them. Heaven forefend.
People have more distractions in their cars than ever before, I have seen the litany of GPS units and other equipment littered atop the crash mat in cars, as well as the large number of idiots talking or messaging on their mobiles. This also creates lazy driving habits such as forgetting to indicate, or just not bothering at all.
The problem with the power limitations is that they are not really enforced, the amount of people in my area on red P's with a WRX or R33 is astonishing; yet these guys drive these cars all day (none of them have jobs) and still do burnouts in burwood every day.
Furthermore, it is a known fact that in Sydney only soft targets ie law abiding P platers are targeted as they are less likely to become violent if arrested - whilst the biggest hoon element in sydney continues with their reckless behaviour with impunity.

I say, solve the problem by putting more visible police on the road to help act as a deterrent.
