i agree that it was probably too big a risk, but i was not offended. i didn't find it funny, but i saw nothing wrong with it
i understand why harry connick jnr may have been offended, but he was in australia at the time and therefore what is offensive in america is not quite so relevant

Maybe we should have some sort of censor board set up and have all jokes checked before airing just in case someone in the world is insulted. That seems to be the only thing that would satisfy the likes of some. I am sure Rodney Rude, Eddie Murphy, Billy Connolly etc would all pass with flying colours.

I found the skit lacking in talent more than taste. However I can understand why HCJ would react the way he did. After holidaying in the States a few weeks ago, we are perceived as a racist country, which I can assure you led too many arguments...idiots. It seems in the States racism is only an issue if it is directed towards blacks...pretty sure the Mexicans aren't exactly level pegging over there...

The week before on Red Faces someone took the mickey out of Barnsey, (with his son watching and judging) and that was not considered offensive, even by Barnsey who opened the show

Taking the mickey is what makes this show funny

Just watching channel 9 10.30 the next day, news break, FIRST story" Hey Hey racist sketch ramifications around the world!!!". Obvious self promotion!

I had enjoyed "Hey Hey it's Saturday" since it's inception. It was mandatory viewing before a night out. Toward the end, probably the last few years, it went way down hill IMHO.

Channel 9 are getting hammered by "Master Chief", so instead of coming up with something innovative themselves they are trying to rehash something that worked in the past. They are also using things they know will be controversial (remember the ship Sam got into on the footy show), to boost ratings.

That's my feeling too. Although I did enjoy the specials, I can't see it comming back as a regular show. It'll be great for a few weeks then fizzle away.

IMO what we saw is the result of 20 years worth of the fun police routinely performing sense-of-humour-oscopies on the general population one by one to the point where people will always find some offence, either real or perceived, in anything. These days, the only institution or group allowed to be satirised, or in the words of Harry Chronic Jnr, "made to look like buffoons" is the white male.

When HHIS was pulled it was actually rating very well, hence the outcry. Unfortunately it was the only show in Australia to interview international celebrities wanting a national audience. To some extent this is what Rove is trying to fill. I just don't find it entertaining watching an international star being interviewed by a kids stuffed toy (but I did like Agro's cartoon connection as a kid), or watching them judge some losers fighting for a measly $1000 on Red Faces. Despite its ratings success it was seen as a fairly low brow attempt at humour and a bit of an embarrassment. Coincidentally thats what Kamahl has said in print this morning. These guests of our country would be comparing HHIS to the likes of Letterman, Parkinson etc. The same question was asked when HHIS was pulled as it is now. Is this really the best we can do?

Comment below I just found on The Huffington Post basically summarises the opinions of many regarding the MJ skit. Coments above relate to the show in general not the skit.

Let's put a bit context into the situation:

1) Most Australians think this show is ridiculous
2) Australia is not America - Australian humor is essentially taking the Mickey out of yourself & others
3) This skit was neither funny nor intended to be offensive

That said, Harry was polite, professional & clearly wears his heart on his sleeve. America & Australia both have a history of terrible race-related injustices, but to be outraged like America doesn't have a race-based humor? C'mon... This skit is so pathetic it's barely worth a mention...

I would put my 2c in but everyone has already said how I feel about it. While it may be offensive in America, this isn't America and the last thing we need is for this country to continue down the path of being more like the U.S. everyday. It would be interesting to hear the 'backroom' conversation around why bring HHIS back again (and middle of the week).

For me it stopped being HHIS when it wasn't Saturday morning.
I use to work Friday Nights (till midnight, and when I was of age few drinks after work).
So Saturday morning was sleep in until HHIS started, then watch a young DS and Ozzie have fun. It was new, fresh and a great way to spend a Saturday.
I remember 'everyone' at high school watched it (male/female).

I think best left to the past have a reunion if they want but keep it at that. There is still loads of stuff they could show that would still be funny (and correct) today.

i wonder why they put that skit on when harry was a guest. sometimes a bit of thought can go a long way. we all know how americans feel towards black people, so why subject him to it. even if harry did not find it offensive, he had to act offended. alot, if not most of his fan base are americans - he cannot afford to offend them by laughing at the skit
besides, the show is meant to be funny, that act was not even remotely funny or entertaining, so why even bother with it
