Have the ceiling speakers pointed away from the corners as you can. What you'll find is that the sound will reflect off the walls in the corner if your not careful and give you a tinny sound. I have flush mounted speakers as well as wall mounted ones. I had to have the wall mounted ones fitted about 500mm off the corner to avoid sound reflection as much as possible, as they sit flat against the wall. My ceiling flush mounted speakers were fitted in the bulkhead and well, I couldn't do too much about the issue. But seeing as these are 'filler' speakers I didnt mind that much.

Hey Guys,

What are your thoughts on Yamaha Gear?? I'm looking at a system for the house i'm building to be used in the main loungeroom. The house we are building has 2 living areas.. one main lounge where the "good stuff" will be and a separate "Kidzone" for my son to play in with its own tv/etc. We have a sony basic Blueray/5.1 for in their that will do the job but I am looking at the Yamaha "Atmos" pack with the following pieces:

RXV-1079 Receiver
NS-555 front stage
NSC-444 Centre
6 Inch Roof Mount Speakers
NS-333 Bookshelfs

has anyone had experience with Yamaha stuff, and/or the models im looking at. I want the roof mounts because the design of the house means I wont really have anywhere for the Bookshelfs speakers for rear stage (they come with the pack so might put them somewhere else running of a separate channel). The sound pretty good in store and for the price I am looking at ($2900) it seems like an OK deal..

Cheers

I'm a big fan of Yamaha amps, speakers not so much.

I would go with Krix or Klipsch speakers, much better than the Yammy's

The pack is pretty cheap as you would not be able to get the amp on its own for less than around $1600 and thats with some pretty hard bargaining

Actually, they have Klipsch speakers as well (Harvey Norman is where im looking at). Might have a listen to them and the Yamaha's as well side by side... The amp in the pack is a pretty decent deal. The ticket price is $3700.. I said under $3k and I may be interested... Im also spending $5500 on a dining setting and lounge from the same shop...lol.. Heading back in Friday on my day off again to see if I can get any more $$ off.. Will check out the Klipsh stuff.. Cheers

It's best to angle the speakers towards the listener. Here is a basic diagram that explains how to set up both stereo and surround sound systems.

In the process of designing a brand new theatre room, we have a fully sound insulated and sound deadened room, 5 metres long by 4 metres wide and a blank canvass to work with.

We a starting from scratch ie we have no equipment what so ever at this stage, brand advise would be good.

DVD storage ideas would be great as well.

Looking for ideas of set ups, TV's, amps, speakers, brands, value for money, lighting, seating, snack bars, fridges etc etc.

Photos would be good as well.

PS I have read the entire thread already.

I think what we need to know if your sound style and SQ criteria. Only because we all have very differing tastes. Some like big and loud, others like discreet and dignified. There is no right or wrong, it's more about tastes and designing a system that suits not just your aural tastes but also your visual tastes. i.e. it has to look pleasing to you as well as delivery the sound you want.

I am no sound technician or Home Theatre guru, but I knew what I wanted in terms of how my system was to look visually and also what I wanted in SQ. Then also matching it to suit your budget is the other juggling act.

For me, I wanted the room to visually say 'distinguished' as soon as someone entered that room. But that is what I wanted. The SQ is crisp, clear and refined. It's not designed to crank loud and high DB's, but at more subdued levels which are pleasing, it delivers excellent quality.

So with that in mind, where do we start? haha

So many questions

Budget is value for money, happy to spend a bit extra for something nice, since I am older I like to have something that looks adult, rather that flashy show stuff kids would prefer.

Want a nice TV, was looking at some LG or Sony ones, prefer to stay away from anything Samsung as we had a Samsung blu ray and TV and were never happy with it, never worked properly and we listened to plenty of excuses from Samsung, but that has been scrapped now anyway, we still have the TV (LED 52") and a $50 dvd player and that is it, TV will go into family room and home theatre room is getting build now.

Prefer discreet speakers, not big boom boxes.

Trying to get ideas of what peoples preferences are and what to avoid and why.

I realise like cars it's all personal choice but I have no idea on where I should start.

I also prefer matching components, but then I was looking at a yamaha amp and speakers or a Bose set up, but heard Bose is over priced and over rated.

Just need to hear what people have and if they are happy with it and why or why not.

Sounds like you would be very happy with a system like Shav's, here's the link

Well while I cant comment for the other guys I will comment based on the experiences and research I did for my setup. It's all I have to go on categorically.

It sounds to me like you are after a more 'mature' setup like I was. You want something stylish, perhaps contemporary visually that eludes to a more expensive setup, but you prefer to be more frugal with the outlay in the system and you aren't all that fussed with the nitty gritty bells and whistles. You just want quality, refinement and a system that offers value for money for many years. Correct?

Im not sure if you read into the system I have. To reiterate I have the following:

70" Sony LED LCD tv wall mounted with all wires concealed in the wall for cleanliness. This is not the tv with the camera attached or anything and it isnt 4k compliant which didnt bother me. Please research 4k tv's if that is something you want to pursue and have the budget for.

I have DLS Flatbox Home Audio speakers for the 3 front units. They are Swedish made, are wall mounted. Not be confused with wall flush mount speakers. They sit on the wall with rubber feet to absorb vibrations well.
http://www.dls.se/en/home/prod.html?produkt=en_542

The 2 rear speakers I have are bulkhead mounted. Still from the DLS range but are just 2 way speakers and are designed to be 'fill in' style speakers. Still decent quality but less attention to fine detail. Decently priced too.

The sub is a custom USA made Dayton 12" with an imported amp to run it. It was designed to fit inside my wall unit to be fully concealed. MDF made with my cabinetry in mind. Basically it has a openable door which I open when I use the system and when I don't I close the door for clean, and concealed visual looks.

But of course there are a lot of speaker options and packages out there. I recommend going to a specialized HT retailer with a dedicated room with which you can test their units out on. Also bring your favorite movie that you like to watch over and over again with you for them to play. I chose Casino Royale on blu ray to test on a range of retailers and systems and made sure they played the opening scene each and every time. That way I could pick the differences in their speakers and arrangements. This is the best way to pick up smaller nuances between systems. Some will sound better than others based on this line of testing. It also helps you notice good and bad points of each system you test.

The Amp is a Yamaha 7.2ch unit with bluetooth streaming and other bits and pieces (I forget the model number but can get it upon request). I only use it as a 5.1 channel though. Not that I had to, just didnt feel the need to over kill it for my sized room. The room I have is a little smaller than yours.

As it is combined, I have had to keep the gain low and I have also had the system fully tuned to the room and it's furniture/curtains etc for optimal balance.

The room has been double lined with 2 layers of 13mm soundchek plasterboard lining from CSR. This is also on the ceilings. I also have added R2.0 insulation batts to the walls and ceilings. A solid core door has been added to help keep the sound inside the room. Much of the coin I have spent has gone into the setup of the room.

All my wiring has been fully concealed in the walls. So if you are currently under construction and have access to lay wires, I would lay all your wiring now with quality gear. If you get a 7.2ch amp, lay all the wires down as a 7.2ch even if you dont use it as such. That way if you change your mind once the system is setup, you dont have the headaches of laying wiring AFTER the wall linings have been fixed and flushed. You can always disconnect the extra 2 or 3 wires and leave them in the wall until you are ready to make that added step. This is what I have done. I still can convert to a full 7.2ch setup if I want as the wires are already laid. All I need it to buy the extra speakers and fit them. Easy!

Your choice of furniture, window treatments and even wall art will make a difference to your SQ and visual style. So choose carefully and do not tune anything on your HT setup until you have completed your interior styling and furnishings. Sound is sensitive to the smallest changes in your room. Once you have completed everything in that room, then tune your system to your speakers last. That way you get the optimal sound detail suited to your room.

Sorry to ramble on. I'll leave it there for now. No doubt there will be some here who will counter my ideas and thats fine. Again I am no expert so happy to be corrected with constructive criticism. I only offer what has worked for me.

Agree with this 100%... As per my above post I nearly bought a Yamaha system based mainly on the one I already have being good... Didn't buy it in the end as (thanks to my son who likes to grab my wallet and take things out) I didn't have my bloody cards on me so had to embarrassingly leave the store...

I then went to a different outlet of the same store when out on the weekend and the Audio guy there was a lot better.. Rather than try to sell my this pack we went through what I wanted from the system, what it would be used for and what I want more.. As well as budget... He ended up telling me that for what I wanted/expect I would be disappointed with the Yamaha speakers... I had a listen to 2 others - Klipsh and Jamo.. Both set up as 5.1 (as I will be) and both using the same Yamaha amp (will be getting the Yamaha Amp regardless) and Im glad he asked me all those questions as I was blown away by the sound.. Its exactly what I like... The Klipsch where good but for my Ears the Jamo was Better... And they come in different colours/finish's.. Paid my deposit and ordered them in as the colour I want isn't in stock.. Went with the Yamaha RXV-799 Amp.. Cant wait for it to arrive...

PS I have read the entire thread already.
I run Yamaha RX-A3000 with a Rotel power amp for the surrounds, Klipsh Reference and a Yamaha 1000w sub.
http://www.klipsch.com.au/home-theater-systems

Here though I will focus on the following advice. Forget about DVD storage. All of mine are in sealed plastic tubs in the garage.

Run cat 5 cable to your office. Get a QNAP 4 bay NAS with 4x5TB WD Red drives and configure as RAID5. Get a decent multimedia player. I have the Popcorn Hour C300.

https://streamaster.com.au/popcorn-h...ia-player.html

Using a program like DVD FAB copy your DVDs into the Multimeadia file. Do not RIP them. Create .ISO files. Naming the files correctly is important. Movies are "Title (Year).ISO. TV series example "Sopranos (1999)S01E01E02E03.ISO.

The media player scrapes the cover art etc from the internet IMD data base. The result is 100% DVD quality that loads up with all the menus etc. All on a multimeadia Juke Box. You can also load BluRay but they are heavy on space. Up to 100GB compared to 8GB.

We have 70 TV series and 400 movies loaded. Never get out of the chair. Bliss.

Hit the nail on the head there.

Thanks for all the other info, it has me thinking.

Yes cabling should be done before wall lining goes in, TV will be wall mounted with hidden wiring.

Probably only need a 5.1 set up for what I need, 70" Sony was one of the ones I was looking at, and that I am leaning towards.

Love your set up by the way.

Love your set up by the way.
No problem, if I can save you some potential headaches during the build then I have done my job. Feel free to ask more questions. Happy to give you my mobile number via PM if you want to chat about it over the phone. :-)

So, bit of an update, went back into store today and ordered my new system. Had the amp in stock but old out of the speaker in white (my chosen colour) even the display ones had been sold... So, coming in the next few weeks I have:

Yamaha RX-V679 Amp
Jamo S 626 Speaker pack with sub...

Got the above, with Monster Brand Cabling for $3k even... I though this to be a fair price.. Now the wait begins... When I get them I need to try to fight the urge not to get them out and set them up at my rental, rather then store them until my house is built..

Pretty happy as this will be my 1st decent set up... Probably not quite as nice as some of the setups in here but perfect for my needs..

Yep, that's my thoughts but the minister of war and finance doesn't get why I would so trying to sell it to her... Lease is up 31/1/2016 so still be a month and a half or so after I get them...

been reading thru this (not 100% but most of it) and love the ideas and set ups

im not 100% knowledgeable in this area , but I do like my onkyo amps my self

how ever reading about the tv setups ill never go back to one I run a projector setup (my third , first is long dead and seconds now retired to the shed for Bathurst) but as has been mentioned its each to their own tastes , and I run mine with a htpc setup
so I can get on the net and run hd movies from there as well as blueray/dvd
but my house and room are only simple as was a 1970's built bd house so have had fun doing the cable game so yes if you have the chance to hide all cables before do it

I don't think projectors are practical for everyday tv viewing, especially in the day time when there's a lot of light.

This is where led tv's shine, my media room is my everyday living room with a 70" Sony led tv which works in light and dark situations.

When I redo the room next year it will cop an in-ceiling 120" motorized screen that will drop in front of the Sony and an in-ceiling mounted projector for night time movies and sports games (EPL junkie) but I can't see myself using the projector during the day.

So the discreet projector setup will be tucked away out of sight until it's needed

ive had the wall painted to be the screen and its all in my living room as well

its 8am I have the house open atm to let the cool breeze thru and this is still clear as day

but yes some times the glare from the sun is to much in the afternoon so I just close the roller shutter on that side of the room but if im having a big movie sech and going the full I close the whole room up and get the cinema affect with the visual and sound

and my screen size is 1350x2380 with high res , makes it good for reading ford forum threads too esp if they have pics

I feel that my biggest problem with the glare is that except the wall for the projector the colour in the rest of the room reflects the sun glare a lot and I should have gone a different colour on them walls

oh and I went aad speakers by the way as well

I been thinking about this, and this is what I am leaning towards, I know some (many?) here will probably be horrified, but keep in mind that I am NOT an audiophile and I am somewhat OCD about matching brands/components.

Also back in the day I had a Sony rear projection TV and surround sound DVD system which I loved and it never missed a beat, and I sold the complete system only about 3 years ago to be replaced with a Samsung Blue ray player 7.1 surround sound and 50" LCD Samsung TV, which was great till the blu ray player played up and soured my experience. I recently took it to the tip, I still have the TV at the moment and just run a cheap $50 dvd player. TV will be banished to the kitchen/dining area, I even had a TV recess put in there by the builder.

You can see the recess here:

Long story short I Like Sony branded stuff due to good personal experiences, we still have an old Sony DVD player and Sony Bravia that is over 10 years old and still good.

So I am leaning towards this system at the moment, Sony 7.2 ch MUTEKI home theatre system:

http://www.sony.com.au/product/ht-m77

Or may be this for a cheaper less obtrusive option, I really like the look of this one:

http://www.sony.com.au/product/bdv-n9200w

And this TV Sony 75" LED HD Smart TV:

http://www.sony.com.au/product/kdl-75w850c

Ok, now tell me why this stuff is no good from an audiophile standpoint....

Keep in mind the above photo was taken last week and not much work will happen between now and xmas, and planning to move in around August September next year, and won't be buying anything till I am settled in, so by then there is probably other stuff available for similar or less money.

Not strictly home theatre, but it's in my home theatre- well, I've just unpacked it and done a dry run to see how it all goes before installing it all. Wow. I can see why vinyl's making a comeback, it's beautiful and very engaging.

It's really a personal choice. I find some Sony stuff to be good. But the dedicated HT gear is better IMHO only due to the high level of R&D they spend. I find Sony gear is the best in their TV's. Hence why I have one. That TV you linked looks the goods.

The thing you need to do before spending is, take out your emotion and test out ALL the systems in your price range, take your favorite movie and play it in all of them and let your ears be your guide. I think I have said this before. Then you will have a far more informed decision to make.

If I was buying a TV today that Sony 75" would be my first choice.

Being an old fart I have bought a lot of tv/stereo gear over the years mostly Sony stuff.

I moved away from Sony when they stopped making it in Japan.

Then when widescreen came out I kinda liked Samsung more and started to get those satellite sound systems, although I still have an old Sony system that has two speakers and a phantom centre speaker. It is stored in the garage somewhere.

In a move to get back to two channel stuff, I shelled out big time on CD/amp/ speakers/sub system that would make your ears bleed. Geez it had some guts. It is now set up in the garage, banned from the house. I occasionally play it when I am outside but I am worried that the bloke across the road will call the cops.

I really liked Bose stuff. How in the hell did they get that sound from those tiny speaker thingies? Now of course it is common place. I didn't get one as they were a bit pricey - but they started a revolution. I still have my old Bose Wave Radio in the kitchen though.

In the loungeroom I have a KEF satellite system I bought because it was on special and it still blows me away when I play my kinda music - country AND western.

In the TV room I don't have any additional speakers to support my Samsung widescreen TV. I have been thinking of getting a sound bar and bass thingy but I haven't got around to it. I watch a lot of stuff with headphones on - a great way to watch movies.

If I were to give someone advice on what sound gear to buy, all things being equal - buy the stuff that will look great in your home. Forget about a sound audition at the seller's place - that's how it sounds there, it may sound different at your place; unless you are building a dedicated audio/visual room of course.

You can read all the reviews, consume all the technical data and audition hundreds of systems - buy a reputable brand from a reputable supplier that look great and you will be happy.

It's just like buying a car. If your wife doesn't like the colour you are doomed. Similarly if she doesn't like the look of the tower speakers in her loungeroom you are likewise doomed.

Gday all, got a Samsung sound bar for xmas to go with Samsung tv, got it connected with optical cable from tv to the sound bar but the audio is out of time with the visual, if I go optical from Tbox to sounbar it's ok or go hdmi from Tbox to sound bar to tv it's ok but then I can't use the sounbar for Xbox or computer via tv without rooting around with cables, using hdmi Direct from tv to sound bar doesn't give any audio at all, any ideas would be good thanks

Hi Lyle,
you have to use the HDMI output on your TV that is labeled ARC, most TVs only 1 specific port is compatible with sound output.
The great thing about ARC is that your sound bar will automatically turn on with your TV and your TV remote will control the volume of your sound bar.
