Default Any one reset there KIng springs Lower??

I wanna know if you can reset the springs like 10mm at the front and 5mm at the back, i dont want ultralows there to low i feel and are crap ride. Ive heard of it beeing done before what are the costs anyone??

as i understand it if you want to wait you can order them from king springs (through your local supplier) to suit what you want send them an email and ask them http://www.kingsprings.com.au/

Yep - angle grinder. 1/4 spring off the top will yield approx 10mm, 1/8 coil around 5mm. Shhhh, don't tell anyone though.

don't cut the springs it is illegal and alters the whole dynamics of the suspension by shortening the overall length of spring steel supporting the car. if you have a major accident with serious injury or death and they find you have cut springs there is a good chance you will be found in the wrong even if you didn't cause the accident resulting in free room and board at the govenments expense. it's just not worth it

If that's true, how do you explain the fact that some AUs have a 9 coil spring, some have 11 coil, and some have 13 coils? They're all different lengths anyway, both compressed and uncompressed (and I'm talking way different lengths, like 200mm variation).

The number of coils and thickness of the wire making up the spring dictate ride comfort and suspension compression rates. By "adjusting" an 11 coil spring 1/4 of a coil, you are not going to affect too much at all in behaviour - only in compressed height. You certainly don't want to chop so much out that the spring is not held into the shoch aseembly properly, but you would have to around 4 coils out before that is a problem.

I was thinkin bout chopping a little out of my stock rear springs on my s1 v8 forte,the suspension is that bloody hard i think it would probably improve traction, ride etc.It sits 20mm higher at the back so half a coil should do eh JC?

That's a good idea - if it doesn't see you coming, then perhaps it never happened. Do not cut more than a full coil out of the rears though - they're not as long or compressed as the fronts, so you don't have as much excess length to work with. And remember to paint the cut bit black/red/blue/yellow (to match the spring colour - it prevents rust, and makes it "look" factory).

If you dont chop em there is something uncomfortable about having them reset...I dont quite like the idea of the things being heated up and shortened...surely have to alter the characteristics of the spring. Though saves you buying a whole new set I guess and significantly cheaper.

IIRC, Standard Forte springs have 11 coils and unsprung have a length of 370mm. XR springs have 9 coils and unsprung are around 345mm. Fairmont springs have 13 coils and 395mm length.

So, based on some basic maths, you can cut a full coil out of the Forte springs, leaving 10 coils and unsprung length of around 350mm - still longer than an XR spring, so it will seat properly. This will lower the car by around 1". From the Fairmont ones, you could cut 2 coils, leaving 11, with a length of 350mm, approx. However, this would drop around 2" off the height ( a bit much, IMO).

Once these are assembled they all end up around 325mm compressed and fully assembled, so while you may be changing the spring rates by cutting coils, it's not enough to make the car bounce like a VL commondore.

These are all for front springs - rears I wouldn't take any more than 1/2 coil out, just because of the way they seat. I am ll for safety and doing things properly, and would never cut a set of XR or King springs any more than 1/2 coil - it's just not needed, and given that they generally only have 9 winds, you would then be affecting the spring characteristic too much.

Obviously, I have massaged a few springs this way, not necessarily on my cars though, and the owners have been more than happy with the results. I have driven these cars, and apart from a lowered ride height, the suspension does not behave too far differently from what they did stock - still the same comfort and travel with a slightly firmer ride than stock; though this will also be achieved by fitting XR springs to a Fairmont etc, and in fact, in most cases, the ride is not quite as harsh as the XR springs give.

The legalities of trimming springs is a bit of a grey area - obviously, if the spring can move in it's mount, it is unsafe, however, my view is that if it is as secure as the original spring was, then no harm no foul. Note that, IMO, anyone who reduces a spring below a count of 9 coils is asking for trouble.

Just go ultralows with pedders sports ryder shocks, there not even that low (the front is, but the back will still look similar to superlow height but it'll ride better than stock shocks + superlows from my experience, don't know how different and AU would be, can't be that much difference anyway.

at $77 a set, why waste your time chopping springs? JC you say how its fine and in reality it is, but it is still illigal. Don't be a pov, $154 alround for new kings.

Where do you get them from so cheaply? General price is around $110 per pair.

I dont know howw peeders comfort gas will go with Ultralows?? i piking up the struts today, i think im gonna buy the ultralows for the front and leve the suprelows in the back cos i have subbies and amps which make it lower than superlows plus then my fuel so hopefully it will sit level with 3/4 of a tank.
