P Plate Company car.

hi guys i may be eligible for a company car at the end of the year.

I was wondering if i am allowed to drive a g6et or xr6t on my ps but as a company car?

You have to give good reason and list all other cars in the business and say why you can't use those and why you need a high powered vehicle to carry out your duties. I have an exemption for an EVO X because its an R&D vehicle

there are no other cars in the business, i work in a lawfirm and carry clients and solicitors and barristers, it would need to be a big comfy car eg;falcon commodore, im not sure why id need the power.

sorry but whats a R&D car?

R&D - Research and Development

Yeah the power one can be tricky to get around also you have to provide a cover letter from your boss too and he has to say why you need the car. Being that there are no other cars in the business you may be in for a chance but you may have a fight on your hands (but I'm sure you have some good resources). Coming that the application is from a law firm the traffic department may not put up a fight.

Could always say that's what the boss wants and you don't have a say but will need to use it...might work.

I got mine for a Merc by just saying I may be designated driver one night...but I may have been lucky with that.

yeah so i should get them to apply for the exemption before buying the car hey?

i thought thats what it was what do you do in r&d jobs and howcome you need an evo :P haha

Red P's or Green ?

Im no expert on P Plate restrictions, but you maybe restricted on what you can drive.
Being a company car wont matter to the police when they pull you up for it.

Question begs. You work for a law firm, yet you're asking on a forum about it. Why not ask the lawyers? After all, they know the law better than most on this forum

If it's the only car your company has to offer, than you'll most likely get an exemption.

How many excuses can one come up with as to why you need a high powered car as your company car???

That certainly is a classic... you need a V8 to haul all those heavy tools...

Just ask for a G6E N/A? Uses softer springs then a G6E Turbo. Unless you have already bought the car, which you already stated you havn't. I know you are eager to get into a turbo but the police wont care! They will hound you whether you have an exemption or not because you have a P plate on the back of your car. Is it really worth it?

Up here in QLD you can get a pardon during work hours however after that you're fair game.

yeah think i should just wait, i have an xr6 now as my own car, but am racking up so many ks for work (getting reimbursed) but still thanks for all your help guys.

Considering you havent even bought the car, i can see no genuine reason you could possibly give to drive it.
If you had have already owned it (or the company) previously, you may have a chance.
The options are to buy something your allowed to drive or walk.

if they are buying the car for you to drive your chances are slim as they will say they should have bought a p plate legal vehicle. a standard 6 is more than up to the job. to be honest these threads by novice drivers wanting to drive performance cars are getting a bit much. get some experience then get a powerful car.
P platers are still learning to drive thats why they are restricted

Tell them to go for the G6E instead, or a 6 cylinder Caprice/Statesman instead.

No chance of getting an exemption for a XR6T, well in Victoria anyways as its on the banned/no exemptions list.

If they've yet to purchase a company car specifically for your use then good luck explaining that one to the RTA.

Don't even apply! Just whip the turbo badge off it. I highly doubt a cop would pop the bonnet a new un-modded G6ET. That is the catch...leave it standard so it doesn't grab attention.

I don't like your chances.

1) the car was not already owned
2) You job does not require the driving of restricted vehicles e.g. mechanic etc.
3) You are trying to manipulate the situation to create an artificial loophole in a law that has been designed to specifically prevent you from doing this.
4) You work at a law firm, firstly they do not need to be seen doing something that can blow up in their faces should you have an accident, even on that was not your fault, and your passenger is hurt.

The law is in place because too many inexperienced drivers got into vehicles that were way above their capability with delusions of exceptional driving skill and went splat.

Just go with the flow as the life you save may be someone important......

wrong. I remember the circumstances that led to the new restriction's coming in. The first big incident was when a young criminal took his dads keys to the gtr skyline and crashed and killed some passengers at high speed.
After this there was numerous accidents in high powered cars, however no matter what the law was they would have still done the wrong thing because they had already broken other laws so why would they follow a new one? Most of them were young people stealing cars. The fact that they were p platers is irrelevant.

Have the road deaths involving P platers dropped since these laws have come in?

iirc road deaths for p platers increased in the 2 years following the introduction of the restrictions. I don't have any links at the moment, but it was discreetly reported at the time.
Longer term it may have worked but you will never know because there are a lot of other factors involved i.e. Young drivers owning safer cars. The only accurate data would be within 3 years of the laws coming in so you could actually prove that the restrictions is what did it.
