Default Who goes to car auctions??

Just wondering who goes. Im thinking of buying a fairmont ghia BF hopefully in EGO. there was a fixed price one but it was in fyshwick. It was going for $23,000 and had 40thousand ks. Just wondering if at auction they go for much less or is the fixed price thing is a good option.

I bought my XR6 at Pickles, and it had a fixed price of $32,000 on it, which was about the same as what the Ford dealer near my house wanted for a second hand one also.

I got it at auction for $27,000.

Been to quite a few auctions. I got my son a 97 Mazda 626 that had been for sale at $5,300 previously (unknown to me, a mate told me).
Went to the auction and I had it at $5,400 and then someone else started bidding too and ended up getting it for $6,400.
So it depends on if someone else wants it bad.

A BF1 should go for considerably less than that at auction.

Go to an auction and just research. I reckon a car like that would be more like high 18's, low 19's.

Both I was researching the auctions late last year when i bought my BA.

Nice BFI Futura's with 50k on them were going for mid to high 17's at pickles. BF2's were going for more about 19k. VE Commodore's were 20K, VZ's about 17. E-Gas models were going for about an extra 2g on petrol. The few BA's and VY's around were pretty knocked about, but quite cheap.

Been to a couple recently.
Watched a BF XR8, 6 speed auto, leather in Rapid with something like 30000km on it go for $22K
Was unlicensed but damn it was cheap.

Also saw a G220 with 60000km get passed through at $14K, no one bided on it.

This was in Perth so I would say it would be cheaper over there.

BA/BF Falcons are going very cheap at the auctions at the moment, especially the damaged ones.

E.g: BF XLS ute with front damage went for $2000.

Have seen undamaged BA XTs go for 6k.

This is Pickles and Manheimfowles.

You should get it for around the 18500 - 21000 mark at auction. As this car is a newer car and still covered under factory warranty, expect to pay a little more for it than say a BA fairmont. Once out of warranty, cars tend to lose a little more value for perceived potential expenses.

I bought my BA at auction a couple of years ago and saved a bomb. As a general rule of thumb, I found that cars went for ~13% less than the buy it now price. This was also fairly true for commodores, toyotas and subarus as well. I did a fair amount of research, went to around 6-7 auctions and looked a dozens of cars before I was ready to buy. Ahh, the free time of uni! Anything within 10% of the full price was too much, anything under was a good buy (provided there was nothing wrong with it). Try to find out who the dealers are and bid against them, they won't buy with emotion so won't pay too much.

Although prices have changed a bit recently, so try to do a bit of research.

Na the cars are cheaper in w.a, smaller population to sell to and it's to expensive to bring them back most of the time.

I've been keeping an eye on the auctions up in Brisbane for a while. I've been seeing fixed price BA sedans (at Pickles Brisbane) with @ 100k for $8990 and up. E-gas cars seem to be getting more at auction and in the used car market.
I saw a BF Fairmont somewhere (I can't remember where exactly) the other week for $15k. I wondered what was wrong with it.
Pickles deal with a fair amount of repossessed cars as well as the usual fleet/ex Gov't stuff.
Good idea to attend a few auctions before buying to get an idea. But the fixed price ones seem to be decent prices and sell fast.

sorry to sort of hijack your thread but what would you be expecting for a BA XR6 or XT at auction? manual XT more expensive than the auto?

Are the auctions only on newish cars? What are the chances of finding an EL XR6 at them?

fleet/govt auctions would be only newer cars (they update every 6 months or something like that) but places like pickles have a few older models, check their websites

I disagree with that.
There isn't as much on the market and comparing prices on carsales.com.au, they appear to be more expensive over here.
A lot of dreamers trying to sell privately as well...

go to www.governmentauctions.com.au, there are always bargains there. They had a BF Fairmont Ghia there on the weekend that sold for around $22k.

Where on earth are you getting you info from.
That is the biggest load of crap I have read on
here yet. :
Most govt vehicles are not sold until 2-3years
unless they have done astronomical klms.

Seriously guys if you don't know what you
are doin the auction is not the place to be.
Hire the services of a broker and pay him $500
to do the bidding for you. There are a lot of dealers
out there who take great delight in seeing how
far they can push the privatey. I have seen it
done hundreds of times.

tx3dude check out this site for good indicator of prices
http://www.auctions.sa.gov.au/prices.php

Sydney & Melbourne auctions tend to be slightly cheaper than Adelaide. Generally also newer higher mileage cars will go for more than older cars, even those with considerably less mileage. If you can find an 04 or 05 model BA2 it should be pretty darn cheap. Governments have shifted away from prestige models such as Fairmonts & Ghia's but there should be a few around, and of course there will be other fleet cars around.

TX3 DUDE I just got a car from the auctions and i wrote down a few prices here they are:

Auction was 6AUG08 @Altona/Melbourne @MFowles.

05 Camary 53,000km 10600
07 bf xr6 mk II 56,000km 18500 Toxic Leather/Prem sound
05 bf fairmont kashmir 70,000km 15000
07 bf mkII xr6 60000km 17900 Leather/Prem sound Yellow
06 Territory SY TX 52000km 18400
07 xr6t (now mine) 65000km 21250.

All cars have $350 admin fee once u win + some unregistered.
From what I hear Sydney auctions are cheaper and LPG cars go for around 3k more.

There is a nice 2005 black XR6T at Pickles in Syd atm for $17400 looks quite nice.
