Default VE Commo $1000

So a mate of mine just bought a VE commodore for $1000

No rust no body damage clean interior looks brand new.

The catch 900,000kms on the clock, ex taxi.

his plan is to spend the other $10k he has on replacing the driveline (hes a mechnic so parts cost only DIY job)

my question is:

Is it worth it???

I think it is.

His previous car was an XT BF (not a taxi) which he fully converted to an F6.
All the different parts that are on the F6 he put on the XT (including interior trim cluster brakes, suspension etc etc. Which I think he has built to a better standard than a true F6

900,000km on a VE would equate to ~830km a day, that's a lot.
That car must have been driven 24hrs a day at no less than 34km per hour.

Some of them do!

But on the VE for 1k.
Thats a good price for a cab, even if he spends 15k to make it the standard of a HSV would be good.
Interior, body kit, paint, new v8 and so on.

Woah, where do I start?

The price, Very cheap, most ex taxis I see go for about the 2K mark, and are usually the superseded model, that said however, the kays are extremely high, even for a cab, they usually run up to that in 6 years, let alone 2 or 3. If the body and interior are in good shape (worry about dents, ignore scratches, you would probably want to respray it anyway).

I would probably go for a real sleeper, find some ordinary 19" SS wheels on it, and give it some lower suspension, but other than that, leave the exterior as is, then go to town on the driveline, put in something to make HSV blush and blow away all of the little ricer boys in their fully sick Silvias.

Oh and one other thing, a VE as a cab, what were they thinking? (yeah yeah I know I know )

What would the "body wear" (i.e. torsional twisting, flexing, structural stresses etc) of a car of those kilometres be like?

Amazing.. $1K for an '06 car? Here was I thinking a 320,000km '02 BA XT for $8000 back in 2007 was a good deal for a car to strip down and rebuild. Where'd he find such a deal, and can he find anymore ? :

Personally I think it might be lot more trouble then its worth. I used to work for holden and the hassels you had to go threw to fit an upgraded steering wheel and gear knob, holden accessories and the pain in the butt that is installing a towbar onto a ve with revers sensors. I hope hes good at electrics and daignostics

Yeah, I'm finding that a bit hard to believe, but could be true.

I did sums..if it is a 2006 model, first ever made, with 900,000klms, it's around 850 klms a day non stop for 3 years, car virtually never stopping or switching off, even with driver swapping between shifts this car can't have that many kays. Around 500,000 klms would be closer the mark but for a G, that's too cheap almost.

theres a FG XR6 here in town and had its 3000km service within a week, it is out 24/7, will have to try to find out how many on that

For a thousand bucks it'd make a pretty schmick dog kennel or paddock car... The VE's at my work with 200,000 on them are that loose and rattly and squeaky, you wouldn't even think about something with that kind of use..

Also, 900,000 seems excessive, but even at half that, I wouldn't want it.

If I could get one for a grand with more realistic klms (450-500,000) I would, purely for a stupid burnout car. Matt black, no rear springs. For a grand it's not like you are really losing much money, plus no doubt some silly bugger will buy it for that much after you're done anyway..

I wouldn't even think they're little 6's could handle over 500 000, I guess the age plays a role.

Anything can last waaaaaay over 500,000 these days with modern oils, especailly on a car that's hardly ever cooled down. The alloytech is alot smoother engine than the early V6 and they will do 500,000 no problem even without really being looked after. There are alot of VN's arund with 500,000 + on the original motor

Still I don't think the 900,000 is possible this early in the VE's life
