Hi randomperson. (nice username) and welcome to the forum.

That's one way of doing it. I have heard of people doing this in the past. Not sure if it will cause any damage or not. It should be okay if you are not going to run it for a long time.

The top hose might be better.....gravity might help but happy to be corrected.....it's worked for me in the past. Silly question but does the engine push the water up through the radiator?

In the bottom will be fine. Run for as long as you like. Water goes back in top of radiator .

If there is no water pump connected it might be a good idea, but with the water pump connected you will be fighting the direction of flow.

The direction of flow is such due to thermal syphoning effect that was used in earlier cars that didnt have water pumps. It relies on hot water rising(inside) the engine block and cool water sinking(inside the radiator) to set up a flow. Hence why the radiators were typically long thin and vertical in older engines.
The vertical design continued over even when water pumps were fitted as it still aided circulation and the frontal design of cars still warranted a vertical flow radiator.

with cross flow radiators the effect of the cooling water in the radiator setting up a flow has gone, however, the effect of thermal syphoning in the engine block is still there, so the direction of flow has remained.

For the OP, yes, I think what you propose is okay, but have never tried it. One thing Id do is to position the inlet of the bottom radiator hose as high as possible and facing up, so that there is water lapping around the water pump, even make a near leak proof seal between your garden hose and the bottom hose.
