Easy answer, for an auto AU you'll need a Dev 5 to get that sort of rwkw. Dev 4/Streetfighter will only get around 150rwkw, maybe a touch more, in an auto. The big question is are you after a dyno number or something else? If your just after a number on a dyno then thats fair enough but if you are after an ET at the drags it might be easier to pick a time you want to get to then work on that. Remember, for the drags its a complete driveline package, not just brute horsepower.
Let us know what you really want to achieve, then many of us here might be better able to point you on a cost effective path.

ok im after both, lets say iv got to beat a mates AU1 XR8 UTE on dyno and drags, im thinking dyno will be easyier then drags considering his is a ute nice and light....and mines heavy as hell lol.
and the AU1 XR8 by memory are 200kw's or 220kw's ...... so il be needing 165rwkws to beat him on dyno im hoping.... |

A good AU1 XR8 with exhaust will be around 150-155rwkw at best.. probably less if its an auto (they are 185kw engines). To be honest, given the right mods, you'll find it easier to beat it on the track then on a Dyno. V8's love dynos but, with a few changes, you'll find it is cheaper and easier to mod your I6 to get some very impressive numbers on the track.
Stock AU1 XR8 with exhaust will run a high 14 to 15.1 give or take. Exhaust, highstall, a mild cam and diff change and your there. Of course if the XR8 ute spends the money to do the same theres very little you will be able to do to keep up without spending a lot more money to really go for the big power. If you really want to make a good bet.. set 1 condition on the race.... each vehicle must carry 4 passengers and a driver. Sure the ute can do it but I'd like to see the 3 looneys that would be willing to ride in the back :P

ROFLAMO !!!!!!! love the passengers idea !
well he aint spending money on the utem its a standard AU1 XR8 no custom exhaust or anything it is as it was when bought from dealers floor.... and he runs BP Ultimate and im running duel fuel, (which i forgot to mention) which makes it harder again :( but yes i need to beat him on both dyno and track... |

I simply dont think you will get enough air into the engine to produce that sort of power.. it will be very, very difficult with the mixer ring reducing the intake size the way it does.

Another member has a duel fuel AU XR6 VCT manual with full exhaust and headers and the factory fit 3.45 diff.. 15.7 was his best. To be honest, I dont think there is a low 15 second NA LPG I6 on the forums. To beat an XR8 you need to be in the 14's at least.

what do u mean by very well sorted gas system ?
and as for 14's i do plan on getting there. even if it means 3.9diff gears to go with the dev5 and ill just have to save up longer and get a better gearbox and highstall. with those i should make it to high 14's...... even with standard gearbox..... ? |

3000rpm stall, shift kit, 3.9diff gears, full dev5 with a good tune which jmm will give..
14's SHOULD be there.. if its not, roll it and torch it lol... not sure on the gas issue though.. take it off! gas is for bbq's lol.. and the higher performance motors from what ive heard are generally more fuel economical.... (newbie question) can you bore the mixer ring out at all? |

My AU1 XR8 ute (auto) made 136 or at the treads, completely stock down to the paper air filter. Unfortunately i never ran it at the drags stock, but i believe a mid 15 would be a pretty decent time for an automatic AU1 XR8 Ute...
The utes are not that light either. With spare wheel, jack, and tonneau cover removed my race weight is 1760KG including me (about 90kg). An auto i6 fairmont with irs would probably weigh around the same? IMO to beat him at the track and on the dyno, get a mild cam (2nd hand XR6 would do), JMM headers and exhaust, custom tune (edit from Simon @ Xtreme Ford Tuning), 3.7/3.9 diff gears, JMM 3000 converter. That should have you making 140-odd rwkw and running high 14's. Your mates ute will be 2-3 car-lengths behind you at the track ;)

Why won't you consider forced induction. For peanuts more than 6 k, you could have a custom single turbo set up put together, or a nice underbonnet super charger and make that pwr easy, with a stock engine and only programming. Leave the tranny, and the diff gears alone. (tranny cooler would be wise though) It would absolutely kill ya mates XR8 and be a nicer day to day driver than a worked n/a 6, plus could even rtn better economy when your not up it.
Lose the gas... unless you go dedicated LPG, with an engine set up to take advantage of this fuel it will always be compromised between LPG and Unleaded. Happy V8 hunting though !

2) they'd wanna be expensive peanuts... ive been down the forced route before, i had $7200 worth of parts alone, and it was gonna cost another $3000 for fully installing and tuning.. i didnt cut corners, i got all the right (good) gear.. going forced induction is not cheap, and insurance/getting it engineered will make a mess of you.. |

You cannot bore the mixer ring out but there is nothing stopping you from removing it for a fun day at the track..Pull a wire off the solenoid as a fail safe incase you or someone flicks the switch though. Just take it out before you go, reset the ECU and drive it hard on petrol to the track.. By the time you are lining up for your runs the ECU should have adjusted to the extra intake charge

i believe turbo and superchargers are the cheats way out, no offence to anyone thats done it..... its just my personal opinion, like great u can go do it and get massive amounts of power from a simple single thing, but id rather keep it na and work it as is.
