blu ray players are roughly $800 or so at the moment anyway.

Buy the PS3. we have been installing ps3's in home cinemas instead of blu ray players because people realise the value in having the game system and the blu ray player as well.

There is still some contention between Blueray and HDDVD and at this the the media is still a bit thin on the ground so if you are going to lash out then have a GOOD look around. If you TV is less than a native 1200x800 or so then there really is going to be bugger all difference in picture quality.

All new technology costs. I remember my first CD player cost over $1,000 and at the time my amp/speaker combo was only just up to the task but the quality of sound was so superior to the LP/cassette options that it was amazing.
Likewise, my first DVD was $860. Again the picture quality and the ability to sho in widescreen was vastly superior to the existing VHS of the time. I upgraded my TV to a widescreen in 1998 and 5.1 surround sound in 1999 just to be able to show the DVD better.

Interestingly most people who saw/heard this equipment were very impressed and many went out and bought there own. The only people who called it **** value were those who were jealous because could they could not afford it......

the difference is that the blu-ray player would only be dedicated for CD/DVD/Bluray disk, better support for the movies....HDMI, component, optical out, RCA in/out if its a panasonic viera link

sony PS3 sucks the disk in doesnt it? so that rules out those mini DVD disks from a handy cam or from the HD panasonic one because it can only play on a blu-ray player

yes bluray is nice but whats the tvs specs? support 1080p have HDMI have a sound system, plan on buying bluray movies, wish to upgrade it later on in say 1-2yrs when panasonic make a bluray digital tuner recorder for half the price?

i voted dedicated bluray player

Yes have a Yamaha / bose sound system to hook up to the LCD tv. TV specs easily support 1080p and hdmi, just looked at a decent set cables omg $390 just for the tv

HDMI cables are ridiculously expensive. But you get a HDMI cable with the PS3.

I'm very iffy about purchasing anything like this at the moment, I'm going to wait and see if a decent product comes out that's compatible with both HD-DVD & Blu-Ray for a reasonable price.

If you don't really care too much for HD-DVD and blu-ray is all you want, then I'd suggest the PS3, you'll get a bit more out of it than a standalone player. And with GTA4 around the corner.... ;)

If you "must have" a Blu-ray player right now, go with the PS3.

Should the crowd move to HD-DVD's in the new year..... you still have a PS3 to play games on.

I think if you have any interest in the game side of things, , you would have to be a complete malaka to not buy the PS3.....

Yes, it is an awesome blu-ray player, , and as a bonus, its also the best gaming console you can get.

Porn industry has decided to use HD DVD as their format over Blu Ray.

Any other questions?

I thought that was still up in the air a bit, but they are now leaning towards HD, which means Blu-ray will fall through.

The Sony dedicated Blu Ray player, does have the 24bit processor and HDMI 1.3, and is according to Sony, alot better quality vs their PS3.
The PS3 is still a good player, and on par quality wise to the Samsung player you see around for $699 with their 1080p screens

Each to there own but that is debatable. At the moment the PS3 doesn't have a huge range of games & has lost a few exclusive titles to the 360...

I will one day get a PS3 when it has a decent price drop but I'm having to much fun at the moment playing Forza2 on my 360 to even consider getting one yet...

Personally, I would, if I was buying such a device at the moment, read info, by Googling the product you are looking for (pick a couple of brands and models) in order to checkout 'benchtest' reviews. Asking here generally only gets personal opinion responses, with only the ocassional reference to the real info you need. Personal opinion is fine, but so far nobody has responded who actually has one....and that won't really help you.

Your wife may very well be right, it just depends how much gaming you do, and whether or not you are happy with the playback result on a PS3....after all, it's not really meant for that, it's just bonus usage.

Mind you, you could get a PS3 now, and if things go HDDVD down the track you could grab one of those players, and you're covered.

So you bought a PS3 only for its "gamer" ability and not to make use of its other features. Yes I can understand that.

PS3 should fall heavily in price in the near future due to terrible sales to come in line with the xbox 360 and wii.

there's a battle between blueray & hdcd (VHS/BETAMAX)
so in my opinion buy a "multi player" or see who win's the battle.

Agreed. Wait 'til the dust settles, and move in on the cheaper prices. The problem is will it be a repeat of the VHS/Betamax war. VHS won that fight, but was inferior to it's competitor. BetaMax had a faster running tape, and therefore had greater capacity for quality. It also had a smaller casing, and was better for storage. From all that I have read thus far on the HD battlefront, the HD-DVD format is the cheapest to manufacture, and therefore would benefit the end user. But BluRay has far greater capacity for storage, with quad layer being trialed for 100gb. And they can offer hybrid formats, with old school dvd one side and Blu Ray the other. Added to this is the battle between Movie houses. Some titles on each format, as each side prefers the other format.

I will wait. PS3 doesn't interest me, nor did earlier incarnations. I prefer my games on the PC.

I'm not even sure if Blu Ray will take off. Remember Beta and Video Disc, and mini disc in the US. Not all technologies become mainstream. A lot of people won't dive into technology until its proven. I guess all technological improvements are usually replaced by something better within a few years.

I'd get a dedicated blu-ray player because the player in playstations will not be as good as a dedicated played...DVD, blu-ray... u name it.

everyone can remember how crappy the first dvd players were... bout $2000 and as big as some tvs, slow to load ect. The first of the blu-rays are taking 40 secs - 1 minute to load a movie, i'm sure if you wait a few months they will; be better machines and cost around the $500 mark.

Forget PS3, in a year their blu-ray dvd feature will be a crock like with the current ps2 dvd feature which was lucky to play about 5 dvds before it decided to crack the shits and not play anything except games
