How much is my PC worth?

I am thinking of buying a new PC next month to replace my four year old system. If I was to sell the case only (and everthing inside it), how much do you think I could get? Honest responses only please.

Power supply - Topower TOP-350P4 (350W, ATX12V)
Motherboard - MSI KT3 Ultra
CPU - AMD 2100+ XP
RAM - 2 x 256Meg DDR PC2700 (Kingston)
RAM - 1 x 512Meg DDR PC2700 (Generic)
Graphics card - Leadtek WinFast A250 LE TD (GeForce4 Ti 4200)
Sound card - Sound Blaster Live! DE5.1 SE
HDD - 80Gb Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM (ST380021A)

In all honesty I rekon you'd be better off just keeping it as a second system, network it up and use it for storage, game/file server etc etc.

But thats almost the main parts. I just noticed you said in a month your planning on selling it. Thats better for me, ill buy the whole lot for $200 in a month? Thats negotiable. Tell me what ya reckon.

thinking, if you wanted to go and buy your current system, it'd be over $5-700

if you go too the computer swap meets you will get a good idea what it worth and see how much parts cost too buy separatly, it still looks like a reasonable spec machine, unfortunatley computers depreciate almost as fast as cars it would seem.

if your gonna buy a new one but it online cause you'll save a bit of dough
pieces to keep if selling seperatly
HDD - not worth selling even more to buy the same thing
DVDRW - just easier to keep if newish cost almost same as 2nd hand
floppy - buy these new for $5 so not worth selling and should last a lifetime
Sound card - better than any onboard piece even in top end motherboards
sell or ditch the rest or keep as a backup/storage and test machine

performance
AMD peforms better than INTEL but AMD gets hotter
i think (correct if wrong) AMD is cheaper
dont buy INTEL 64bit = buying Nissan x-trail useless on and off road
well AMD can only go on a motherboard for AMD and INTEL is the other way

motherboards (in no order)
i have owned about 7 ASUS motherboards from cheap to EXPENSIVE ($400) trust them with my life
i thinks it comes with a 5 year warranty across the range (thats good)
others are Abit - top end models are expensive but reliable
albatron - dont expect anything fancy for the cheapies
ECS (Elitegroup)- owned one with a 2000+ think i still got it but highly recommend NOT buying this brand
Gigabyte - good and reliable much like the Asus (bit like ford and holden - only difference is ALMOST preference)
and Intel - only work with intel CPU's too expensive not recommended
also intel chipsets on motherboards for intel HIGHLY RECOMMENDED especially the LAN and north/south ports

ram
CORSAIR - DAMN expensive for the GREAT stuff
kingston/kingmax - excellent mid range and cheapish
Geil - reliable bit pricy most come with heatsinks (extra reliability)
OCZ - i think they were engineers who made ram??? reliable cheap to very $$
Generic - alright but dont mix Brands not a good idea cheap to nasty

Video cardsBFG - EXPENSIVE but the top 3 in my books standard overclocked - faster and performs better than any card out there
Leadtek - EXPENSIVE in my top 3
XFX - top 3
Asus - mid range great cards got one now average pricing
Gigabyte - same as asus range
MSI - never again
albatron - NEVER will - heard they are good value for money though and good performing
ASL/Gecube/Sapphire/Sparkle (not the same makes) - bottom line stuff no matter how u look at it they are like buying homebrand - still excellent same qaulity and a little cheaper just dont expect to play VR on it

Powersupply
Antec highly recommended got one now bit expensive for the best top notch stuff but worth it
others i dont know most are the same just depends how u look at it and what u need it for (they all made in china so who knows so is antec by the way)

CDROMS/DVD/FLOPPY/ZIP/CADDY
take a pic almost all the same
Pioneer make excellent dvd burners installed and used maybe 7 of the same model and not one has failed since 2003 i think

casesLian li - make THE BEST quality ive ever seen
antec - has to be 2nd place i got one worth $170 weighs about 40+kg with contents its solid and not like thermaltake
thermaltake - where do i start no really cheap quality..thin aluminium in 'top notch' lan cases they fold and buckle and bend if u got one and its good then i probably hasnt moved from the spot you bought it

Hard drives
choice is recommended
from experience in xbox modding - western digital should be called third world digital they are cheap and they WILL NOT last with heat or constant use and movement - requires extra cooling and 'safer' partition usage
Seagate - the best in the world got 4 of them now one 20gig since 98 running win 95 and still got it been to every lan in ifail and cairns even dropped it a few times..experience 90degree heat (when i cooked my mobo and cpu) and its great although it cost $200 in the day
samsung/hitachi/others and generic - DONT buy them they are crap
oh and your choice of IDE or SATA or now SATAII i recommend SATA if mobo can handle it ...IDE old and slow (big difference in online and lan gaming) sataII dont no anything about it

cooling - your choice all the same
lights - your choice all the same

other accessories not needed but if u must get them
i got a carry strap - very handy for lans and carrying machine around the house

other stuff
speakers - get a good set its worth it
monitor - ohhh 1 million and counting choices go LCD 1. save space
2. save power ?? more features - so it evens out
3. looks better and easier on the eyes
crt 1. has a much nicer and crisp display compared to LCD
2. yep thats it better quality picture

printer - your choice recommend canon
epson/HP/others - alright but u need to spend $$ to get the best
brother has been excellent for the time i used them

recommend ADSL or cable (damn you townsville)
i have only used netgear and will do so until i find some thing better - reasonable prices
cisco - been around since the dinosaur (never used them)
belkin - for the average person - user friendly
netcomm or netcomn? dont no - the best VOIP/adsl

thats about it u name it ive tried it - i worked for a computer company few years back and we tried absolutly everything so we new what we were talking about even cooked (burnt beyond repair) 7 cpu's in a row from $100 - $1000 all within 1 sec anyways i wasnt hijacking your thread just making sure u dont have to sell this new comp anyways hope this helps i put some time into this list

something to consider when buying a new pc is that Windows Vista is coming out soon.
to have full support you will need a 64bit CPU and also a decent graphics card.

as for your system, if you sell your motherboard, cpu and ram as one package on ebay you should fetch about $200. keep your hard drives and dvd drives to minimise costs for your new system.

some people find a geforce 4 ti4200 desirable, once again try ebay. i used to have a card running that chipset. quite a nice card for its age. might get up to $50 i've seen them go for.

advertise your stuff well, use photobucket to host lots of images so ebay doesnt charge you.

the case and powersupply has very little value.

With Vista comming out... Athlon 64 will run it much better than Centrino Duo, Pentium D etc etc. As athlon 64 is true 64. Pentium D and Duo Centrino only have 64bit extension.

Go the athlon ! better for gaming aswell
