Default First speeding fine!

I know its all been said before and dont want to start just another 'Camera' war and I am trying hard not to knock the police, but a little story on how CRAP the system is in Victoria and why I have lost all faith in the police and the system.

The Mrs is most upset as she has received her first speeding fine in 22 years of driving. Not just to and from picking up the kids but solid driving in this time! The crime? Doing 76km (Knocked back to 73km to allow for 3km out) in a 70km zone by a camera at 10.35pm at night on Princes Hwy......3 lanes late at night. Now to say she is a careful driver is an absoolute understatement. In this time not 1 accident, ticket, parket ticket....yes she is a camry driver......but in the XR6. She is devistated by this indescretion and at the time, saw the flash and thought, cant be for me as my speedo says I am on 70km's. Yesterday the ticket arrived courtesy of the Vic police.

Will she slow down in future......NO, unless she drives dangerously. Will this save a life on the road or any serious injury.....NO. We have had the camera argument for ages and now she has finally admitted that it is wrong.

The area the camera was just before a 80 zone, in what I would say, open clear no problem stretch of road and you get done for this? Its crap, its bull**** its the police's and the g'ment's fault and if they think I am buying another ribbon for the cause they can...blah bla bla THIS is not safety issue's but purely revenue and taxing and I pay enough! They can go to hell :

Sorry I had to say it as you have no where else to say it or go to. This thread can be very quickly closed or deleted if it gets out of hand as I have had my say!

Auslandau,

If you want to get her off with a caution, write a letter to "Senior Sergeant R.RITCHIE" as per the address on the back of the ticket and include (as a minimum) the following info:

- The speed detected was less than 15km/h over the limit
- Your wife has not had a ticket in the last three years
- No crash occurred as a result of the 'speeding'

It IS an admission of guilt, however, it will return a caution notice, not a fine. Obviously in the letter, you'd explain the correct circumstances (ie speeds and time driving etc), I have just listed the minimum requirements above.

It's one option for you and your wife to consider. The other is vote Liberal at the next election and let the Labour government know that motorists are not cash cows.

Hope this helps,

BA_Turbs.

Send them a letter asking for leniance, for 22 years of driving you'll get off scott free.

But i do agree, you can be doing 54 in a 60 zone with bald tyres in a 1970 Carolla weaving all over the road in pouring rain and not hear a word, but for doing 66 on a good road, in a well equipt car in perfect conditions you'll recieve a fine. It's not right.

How much was the fine might I ask? (Considering it was only a bee's-whisker over the limit) And yeah go the letter. With no prior record they would HAVE to show some leniency.

I also Just Recieved a Fine for 3 Kms over the limit, I also havent had any sort of ticket since 1975, I am so carefull my 19 yr old son calls me 'a GIRL'. I to am shattered, it's just not "dangerous", its just " illegal " here in VIC. and what about my driving record doesnt that carry any weight at all, why dont we get extra points for a clean record for a year or something. No just a slap on the face for breathing over the limit, what a load of " STUFF".

That for the replies....and yes will defiantley be writting. I thought of doing this (Well the Mrs actually) and I said it would be a waste of time. Its not the points, the money (well part of it) its the way they do it and to whom!

Mind you if I got a speeding fine I would proberly say....."Well they finally got me!" and cop it sweet.

At last. A good reason for living in NSW!

I really cant see how setting speed cameras this low ( 3% ? ) is reducing crashes!

Would be good if it happened,I just remember a poly in NSW promising to abolish the tolls on M4/M5,but as soon as they were elected, out came the "we cant afford it" spiel, makes me sick.

askign for leniancy is the way to go. This is obviously jsut a revenue raiser. Inthis case, the speed was "appropriate". Now, if they had that camera in one of the many areas (around the country) known for violence then maybe they could have stopped it happening.

If the letter doesn't work you could contest it and use the +/- 10% error. Forget the "tolerance" that the police use - use the fact. Or, put it down to the fact that there are things in this world that suck, this is one that gets you riled up but isn't like the end of the world and let it slide.

i think thats utter crap when ADR's state that the speedo may be upto 10% out?

meaning your speedo can actually show 70km/h and your doing 77km/h.

could always "adjust" ur speedo get it tested, and show it is 10% out, then use that :P

It's unfair how speed cameras catch catch safe drivers who only happen to exceed the speed limit uncounsciously and only for a short period of time. Wheras idiots like me who speed all the time never get caught...

The police have the right intentions... its just a shame that safe drivers sometimes get hard done by

Write the letter , appeal against it , specially if she's got a spotless record . when this happened to my wife a Policeman friend told us to put in the letter " how distressed she was at recieving the fine , bla bla bla".

I don't know Vic laws , but NSW has/did have "section 556A of the Motor Traffic Act" . First Offence , I know some people have used this a couple of times .

I am all for that! Its a shame though that the parties are brown and beige with not to much seperating them. Just on these issues alone....as it is another tax.....it should be fought out in the election. But it will proberly just slide by.

No matter what happens and how hard we get slapped, people just put up with it and DO say...."Oh well its the way the it is and I cant do anything about it".

Anyway....letter going back and I will see if it works and let you know.

Cheers........& thanks.

This thread proves that speed cameras can be discussed with out going spacko!

A friend of mine got off with a caution recently. He has had 2 fines in the past - has been driving for about 10 years. He hadn't had one for 3 years+, so he got away with a caution. With a 22 year fine free record, she should get a caution easily, considering the low level of the speeding fine and how little she was over the limit.
