Default Settle an argument for me....

Having a discussion with a mate who reckon its a 351 will fit in an AU no worries. I know this isnt the case and from what I remember the reasoning behind that is that the bay isn't quite big enough to fit the engine in, and that the 351 itself would be older than the car (making it unregisterable) unless you used a Dart block. Have I missed anything or are those the reasons?

Seen Sledgehammer's red AU? Was running a 351 from memory.

Any older engine is permissible in QLD as long as its dedicated LPG. A 351 Windsor *just* fits if I remember correctly, and if im correct again its deck height is higher than a cleveland. I believe that people would have far bigger problems regarding fitting a suitable transmission.

People are free to correct me, its been a while.

I put my 351dart 9.5 deck block and afr heafs in my au ute the other day for a trail fit for pipes. there was never any question it would fit as its been done heaps of times and the eb and au bay is wider than xd and au bay is the same as ba and a boss fits in there where a x series requires tower mods to fit a boss. anyway for me i'm changing my build now and going back to a 427 clevor instead of the 427 windsor because i want to fill the engine bay and thats what i was going to do at the start.

Yeah I'm aware of Sledgehammers existence ( if it still does, it was stolen a while back) but I had a feeling it needed a fair bit of work to fit. Could be wrong on that.

No there is no work other than pipes and mods to the engine mounts if you use a dart block. and i'm sure with a few mods my difillipos would fit. seriously my motor looks small in there.

I thought it was a height and manifold clearance issue, not a 'width' problem...

This could be an issue for some as i'm sticking the air cleaner through the bonnet its not an issue for me. but i have a super victor efi carb style manifol and 4 barrel throttle body on my setup and i think if i was to use a low style air cleaner and a ba buldge it would fit. but my plans are to swap between a tall k&n filter and a shaker.

That horrible 5.4 cammer is jammed into B series, then I'd say a big block could probably be squeezed in.
The AU bay is essentially the same as B series.

As for a 351 wheezer, that would have to be like a co-ck in a sock.

mmm that`s interesting , the thought occurred to me to put an older 351 windsor in mine on straight gas (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/260874141...t_1065wt_1388), but rules and regs scare the crap outa me ......after all i live in the nanny state !, i don`t believe the straight gas thing is applicable the after a certain year in vic.

There is no reason a 351 won't physically fit in the AU engine bay.

As far as emission regulations are concerned the car/engine has to comply with whichever is the newer. So if you have a 351 (363, 383, 402, 427) whatever; as long as it complies with the emissions levels for the AU then all is good. Now, if you want to run carbys - forget it! Unless you go full LPG. With EFI it is easy to get the emissions right, but expensive to get the piece of paper needed. You have to get an EPA certified testing laborotory to do the same emission cycle testing (and noise testing) that manufacturers do with new cars.
