Default Shhh Shhh Shhh noise...

Whilst driving at all speeds, particularly noticeable when driving past fences and solid objects (gotta love echoes!!!)

Is it something to do with my shocks?

Ive been wanting to replace them for a while, just have needed an excuse to fork out some $$

PLEASE TELL ME ITS THE SHOCKS

or something that doesnt cost too much

thanks

maybe the fact your driving past something that lets sound in and out, eg the spaces between the fence post,
just like going under a bridge when u drive past the pilons u get a weird sound at each one.

see how loose ur shocks are go over a bumpy **** road

just for ur liking... i think its the shocks haha

Handbrake.

Try pulling the handbrake lever up and down a little bit and see if that stops it (for a short time).

Yeah, i know that sound ur talking about, but this is different. I've heard it on different cars myself, so it must be a common-ish thing?

Only really started a week or so ago, but it's soooooo bloody annoying!

Maybe i should just wind the windows up, lol

I definately know something is up with my handbrake. I get it reset every couple of months, lol

Have done that pulling up and down thingy, it squeaks a bit, the others noises go away (at least for a while!) but still has that shhh shhh shhh noise :(

Sometimes when i pull up the handbrake, close the garage, hope back in the car and release it to drive off, it clunks a little too :(

/me hates AU handbrakes

That's what i thought at first! I thought a bloody snail had gotten itself into my setup, but upon closer inspection all i could find was Spongebobs mate, Gary :(

could be the brakes, could be wearing out, i believe they have bits of metal that scrape on the disk when pads are low as a warning,
oh yeah, it's the shocks

Maybe there is a cat/dog/child jammed up in your wheel arch?

handbrake. replace shoes, get it set right by someone who's not a goon. <$100 fix.

could it be your rotors are glazed?
i get the same noise and mine are glazed and need machining, but my handbrake also needs adjusting as i very often get that horrible squeaking noise, chuck it in reverse and pull the handbrake up to the catching point and drive backwards for a few m's fixes that temp though.

Hopefully they dont need machining already. Done less than 5000k's on them. I'm gonna try that reverse trick tomorrow Never knew that one! It's getting serviced tomorrow, so i'll just ask him to replace the shoes too.

Awesome

Looks like i'll have to wait for those shocks :(

I got mine adjusted the other day and its still making the noise, turns out i've got to get the front disc machined (AU1 brakes, go figure) so im tossing up if its worth going down the DBA route, 5000k's sounds a 'tad' soon for yours though

i had the same problem on mine..thought it was the handbrake, so replaced it all.. then went for a drive to see if the noise was still there and the rear wheel bearing collapsed and the wheel started wobbling..

so it ended up being the bearing..

and the handbrake still doesn't work..lol

you guys are all idiots. of course its the shocks.

clearly when driving on perfectly smooth road along side something that sound can bounce off, they are just losing pressure and thats the sshh shh shh noise.

DERRR. cant believe no one knew this, on a ford forum of sorts.

I was just thrilled to learn that shocks can be repressurized by reversing a few metres with the handbrake on ;)

for a more serious answer.

if it isnt the handbrake - most likely though

its the air pressure created between the car and the fence pailings.

the sshh shh shh noise is air being forced out of the gaps between the pailings etc because your car is compressing the air originaly just chillin next to the fence, and it has to go somewhere.

...more likely the air in the expansion strips in the concrete drieveway. As the tyres go over the gap the air that was chillin' in there is forced sideways.

It should be noted that it's not the air being forced out that causes the noise, it is actually the air that is left behind telling the air around it to "shh, shh" hoping that it will not have to leave the comfort zone.

bringing this thread back to life, i have the same noise again now and it's constant, driving in an underground carpark or along a concrete wall all i hear is constant shh shh shh noise, with or without brakes, when i apply brakes you can feel and hear a knocking noise coming from the front. Even after doing the reverse trick the noise is still there, doesn't disappear like it did for ayeyew.

I have a feeling the knocking might be the caliper slider as there was a seized front caliper a while back, does this sound about right?

I'd probably jack up the car and take the wheels off the front, look to see if there's anything caught inbetween the calipers and discs. It might also be a warped rotor that's not properly balanced and is making contact with something even though the brakes aren't applied.

its the hand brake. Get the inside of the disc machined where the hand bake pads sit and you wont have any more probs

Just looked up that part number, thanks for the info. All these years we've been blaming Ford and it turns out it's a PBR patented contraption.

PBR lovingly refer to it as the "Banksia".

Ford owners have a variety of other names for it.
