Default How much $$ for new shocks for a 99 AU Fairlane??

Hey all
The fairlane is up for new shocks, and i was just wondering what sorta money am i looking at for replacing all four ?
It looks like the self levelling suspension has been disconnected, or taken out.
The car sits pretty low at the back, pretty much level with the front, and i dont mind this, because it looks gr8.
Only thing is when the car has 3-4 people in it, it bumps and scrapes .
I got new tyres for the car recently, but the ride is very bumpy , the front shocks are definitely goone.
While i was at the tyre shop, the guy there told me he would change all four for $1100. Thats seems quite steep...
So what do you all reckon is a fair price for 4 new shocks ? 6/99 fairlane ghia
and which brands do you recommend ?
Thanks

Tony

Hi mate

You might find a lot of help for AUs in AUFalcon.com, here:

http://www.fordforums.com.au/forumdisplay.php?f=53

You could also try the Contemporary Aus Fords section

http://www.fordforums.com.au/forumdisplay.php?f=30

and the General Techical area:

http://www.fordforums.com.au/forumdisplay.php?f=55

Good luck!

Going by the recent prices paid by some members at Pedders, I'd say around $3500.

Is it the shocks or the springs that causes the back to sag when loaded?
Also I don't think the AU's had self leveling suspension

Im guessing its the springs because i read somewhere that if the self levelling suspension is d/c or removed, the springs have to be changed... so maybe the springs havent been changed.
But the rough ride im pretty sure is because of the shocks , thats why im after a rough estimate of what a set would cost.
private9 - $3500 ? is that for the SLS ?
maybe the $1100 for normal shocks was cheap then :P

cheers guys

Nah, I was just having a stir. Some poor guy here paid a little too much for some suspension work at Pedders recently. There was a thread about it a few days back, started by janek.

New rear springs and shocks should be around $400 max in parts for something like Monroe Gas, plus around 2 hours labour (again, absolute max).

If you fancy a drive to canberra, I'll do the shcoks and

If you dont like hard shocks, dont get the monroe gas ones. They are like rock solid. I have been in a fairlane with Boge's, and it was so nice and soft, yet not bouncy, and quite supportive.

AU Fairlanes and LTDs didn't come with self leveling suspension, last Fairlane and LTDs to have it were the NL / DL. personaly I dodn't miss it at all, it was a pig when it dies on you in the middle of nowhere and you had to drive home with the alarm beeping in your ear and the suspension bottoming out all the time, add to that it was not cheap to fix and the rattling of the compressor used to S#@T me up the wall. getting rid of it was a great idea

They priced the BOGE's at $150 each , so $600 all up for them.
This place i went to, they have every brand shocks available.

Bumping an old thread! I'm after new shocks all round for a '99 Falcon Classic with the live axle setup. It's just the runabout (not a daily driver), so I just want cheap shocks.

I was looking at buying the yellow "Ultima" ones on Ebay, the full setup is about $270 delivered (standard fronts, heavy duty rears - all standard height). Apparently these are on part with Monroe GT's?

Standard fronts and rears ($240 delivered):http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ford-Falc...item41616b6251

Standard fronts, HD rears ($270 delivered):http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ford-Falc...item5891c84e93

However currently Supercheap has a 30% off Gabriel sale.... for the standard series, the Ultima and some Blue Ryder model.

With the discount, I can get a full set of the Gabriel Ultra's for around $260 (probably wouldn't touch the standard red Gabriel shocks).

Are the Gabriel Ultra's on par with the other budget brands?

I know that KYB's etc are highly recommended but they're pricier still. I'm looking at around $450-500 all up - that's all four shocks/struts and fitting.

stay away from those yellow Ultimas they are crap. I put some on the back of my Fairlane a couple of years back and they went from being a nice, if a little firm, ride to soft and mushy in the space of about 3 months. Ya get what ya pays for.

Ta for the heads up I've read elsewhere that they're OK, but those are people who usually have just bought them, not who've been running them for a while... perhaps those white Gabriel Ultra's are the way to go then.
