Default V8 Supercar, how much is a falcon / commodore

So with the V8's to start up soon, I thought it would be interesting to see if anyone knows if there is acutually ANY original parts in a V8 Supercar that came from the current commodore / falcon....

( I am thinking roof, bootlid and floorpan ? )

anyone know any other parts...

basically the body shape thats it, they get delivered a shell of a car and then it is competly cut to bits internally.

I don't believe they even use a shell, they build the chassis/roll cage assembly with all mounting points etc then add body panels to the frame they have created.

They must still maintain a correct shape though so all cars appear the same (except colors etc)

probably the only things in common with the road cars are headlights, tail lights, and door handles (there's probably more)

I saw a few years ago on either foxtel or channel 10 how they made a V8 touring car. They buy the shell only from the manufacturer (Holden/Ford). The first thing they do is find ways of lightening it. The second process was roll cage.

Can't remember much else apart from they showed a factory in Dandenong.

Years ago they did start from a shell and add a cage, before that they used to buy a complete car and start from that.but that was with different rules regarding suspension mounting points etc.

I'm pretty sure they still use the shell as a base as they have to use the factory floorpan.

I have heard that nowdays they start with panels rather than a complete shel since there is so much of the floor that needs changing since Project Blueprint. Anyhow if TEGA has its way all V8SC's will have the same chassis and will be built like NASCAR's

Ive seen a complete Holden panel kit arrive at a well known chassis builder a couple of years ago and they built the car kind of around the cage at the same time.
There's so much that isnt needed from an original shell that its easier to get a floor pan and panel kit rather than pull a complete chassis to pieces.
It might be different today though, Ford or Holden might produce dedicated Race Shells with only the necessary parts included.

And hopefully TEGA will go too far with a formula that suits them, rather than the punters and we will end up with a production based formula again. I cant be the only one who finds it hard to care much about the V8 Supercars can I?
Bring back Group C I say...(drifting off imagining BF GTs with 12" tyres and flares)

Thats fairly correct.
Peter Behag makes the Ford chassis here in Brisbane, and the car is shipped to him in manny pieces, on pallets. The cage is the first part built, and the factory panels, floor pans etc are hung from that..

According to djr when we did the tour last week the shells are taken of the assembly line and shipped to the teams no doors,bonnet or boot lid.
Than the roll cage and all the rest are added in after that.

Thats what they want you to think. If you go to Metro Ford @ Eagle Farm, they have V8 supercar packs which are given to the relevant teams, and they are all on palletts.....floor pan, roof, everything.....taken off the assembly line in millions of bits...

yep what goldie said. i did spotwelding on 14 of the commodore shells that were used last year. (i worked at holdens bodyshop up untill november last year). standard shell with no hanging panels, and no sealent used where there normally would be in a road car.

Hi Guys
In some ways you are all right here.
Some of the Ford teams get their shells assembled by Behag and the Holdens use Dencar. When they arrive they are totally disassembled and these guys build them around the roll cage specified by the team.
In the case of DJR and 888 racing that I know of, they receive a full body shell minus doors, hood, boot and guards and build their cages into them.
888 are currently preparing a new body that will be raced by Lowndes mid season (around Darwin). It takes them thousands of hours to build these cars and each is very unique.
I suggest that if you are interested in seeing things first hand, you simply can't beat 888 for friendliness. They welcome the public and have a great viewing area.

Only the panels are the same, but I think even they are larger they the production version.

Been on two tours of gary rogers racing workshop and both times cars were being built from chassis up and adding panels when needed.

I'm with you, I don't care about v8 supercars either. Occasionally fun to watch, but I think the original drawcard was how people could relate to them.

It'd be nice if some sortof `Casual Cup' was created. All vehicles would have to be road-legal, you'd have
* a `utes' category
* a `wagons' category
* maybe a `1300cc+ motorcycle' category
* `Datto' category
* `courier van' category
* `two tonnes and over' category (SUVs etc)
...all doing various road/circut races/rally for driver and spectator enjoyment. Imagine an Econovan doing the Targa Tasmania, and you get the idea.

A little off-topic, but the main thread questions have been answered.

Thats right there a pack of goodies for each team as spares that is part of the ford assistance given to each team.

nascar type rules for control everything is a joke. Bring back a series of the best road going holdens/fords like the old days. limit the power to say 350kws and have no aero aids other than the spoilers that come with the car. Obviously, concessions given, like the gary rogers 7litre monaro wouldn't be eligible as its a v8supercar and not something that can be purchased from the showroom.

So then, why do the general public worship such a racing category that runs on such custom made cars that are nothing like a Falcon / Commodore.

I cant understand why so many young guys love the "HRT" logo and the HSV racing crap..

How is it called a commodore, when it has a Chevrolet engine, a custom made gearbox ( non holden ) and a FORD diff.....

( hope i am right on the engine / box / diff combo )

I dont get it, ,

I prefer to watch the EA v VN racing...

what engine/drive line do they run. I know its obvioulsy not the Boss or the likes. Has any one got any specs- Sorry for dumb *** question

They run a 5L pushrod V8 (Ford & Holden), which come from the Ford & Chev motorsport departments in the US. The engines are limited to 10:1 compression and 7500rpm. They run a Holinger 6sp gearbox and a Ford 9" based diff.
