Question from my mate...
He was doin 50 on a left hand lane trying to speed up 2 merge to the next lane neways so he speed up to 71km/h when a cop booked him. He told the cop that he was trying to safely merge so he speed up a bit. Neways about 50m up da road the speed limit changes to 70km/h so is he in the wrong? or just unlucky?

In the wrong (legally) and unlucky both at once I guess...
Even if he was 2 meters infront of the 70km/h sign you should still be doing 50km/h until you pass the sign (legally). |

You can only do the posted limit, he could have been 10 meters from the 70 zone if he was above the speed limit he broke the law. Its sucks but thats the way it is.

yeh, legally (technically) in the wrong. Even if overall it was a safer move. I really think some exceptions should be made but its hard to judge whether the drivers actions were sincere or not.
I remember, one of my fines were obtained as I was in the left lane and up ahead, they had a small rd work around something on the footpath (no warning signage) however the barrier was slightly overlapping the narrow lane and due to my car being a boat decided to speed ahead of the car next to me so I could merge over a bit. *Flash*, a vic roads setup car just after the barrier = i'm not a happy camper. What can you do? :(

even though it is silly i over take 90% of the time in the left lane because for some unknown reason most victorians love sitting in the right lane doing 5km/h below the limit!!! I drive the monash all the time and if police booked all the people breaking the "keep left unless overtaking" law then they would raise so much revenue we wouldn't have to have cameras.
My two cents Sorry for being off topic........

Unlucky to be in Victoria with such unreasonable cops. I Got done for 75 in the main street of Camperdown and they pulled me over in the 80 zone. My last speeeding fine, in 1997 no less. Povo Vic cops had a Commodore ute. with a canopy with a radar as a highway patrol car, LOL. Funny how it always seems to be "a mate" that these things happen to.

I didn't think speed cameras were allowed to be setup within 300m of a change in speed limits. Is this not true?

Unlucky that's how the cookie crumbles! I always look around before I put the foot down. Haven't got a fine yet, but was close to getting one the other day. :nutsycuck

This person has broken the law, plain and simple. Why all the fuss? I do believe a precedent may have been set, in Victoria, where a driver got off a speeding infringement in similar circumstances driving on the Western Ring Road.
