Opel Insignia

Saw a black Opel / Vauxhall Insignia on Wellington Pde tonight in Melbourne CBD, you know, the 'new' Euro Vectra...

It was skillfully disguised with black tape over the badges, although not sure why because it was launched months ago.

Any clues ? A replacement for the dire Epica - although surely it would be too costly ? An evaluation vehicle shipped out by a rival manufacturer ?

Possibly GM testing the upcoming Buick Regal (rebadged Insignia) for the US Market? Absolutely gorgeous this car.

it is the replacement for the cruize. most of the ones out of fishermens bend have got chev badges on them. you saw one of the rare non chev ones

so you are saying it is not an opel insignia at all but the 'new' cruze (now delayed and due out next year) being developed by holden. If so why change the sheet metal over the current sedan??

Maybe he mean "Epica"? As the Insignia is not a replacement for the Cruze.

Id say testing by Holden, Holden has said that the Vectra will not be sold here.

HSV were talking about bringing in the insignia VXR....but i believe they have decided against that due to the parts inventory and training necessary with Holden not interested in their own versions.....

as i stated it is the replacement of the cruize. i have been told it is all signed off and by the looks of the timeframes we will be the last to get it any more specifics i did not find out and were not elaborated on.

Incorrect - the Insignia is a much larger and more expensive car, and not a Cruze replacement as it is a 'class' above in terms of size.

The Cruze will continue, as it is only 12 months old approx, and include the Aussie made hatchback version when production turns local.

The one I saw was not a sporty model, just high end lux spec I'd say.

Insignia is the Mondeo equivalent... NOT that of the Focus.

It won't be made here... Imported ? Perhaps.

If/when GM recovers, Opel/Vauxhall should start importing to Australia as a brand, and keep Holden as a low-end brand, like Chevrolet in Europe. Unfortunately, I doubt it would ever happen

Holden ditched plans to import it, an official announcement was made about a month or 2 ago. Too expensive.

I've got my eye on a 2012 wagon. Seems very similar to a Mondeo, with trim and equipment similar to a Titanium.
HUGE load space.
I figure being German that build quality and reliability should be ok?

And I'm guessing service at a (Shudder) Holden dealer?

Why? Get it serviced anywhere. Why people pay for dealer servicing is beyond me.

I do like the old Insignia, Particularly the OPC version, alhough they arent as potent as the numbers and looks suggest.

I considered my comment as ironic, considering the earlier posts made about the Insignia nearly 8 years ago. 2010 should have seen the release of the VF Commodore, the writing was on the wall for Holden’s closure, but nobody wanted to think about it. At that time plans should have been in place for whatever the Australian built replacement was to be, but procrastination and uncertainly were the order of the day. We all know how that ends now.

I have had two Holden/Opels, both were plagued with electronic engine management problems that Holden had no idea about, short of replacing bits and pieces until the problem went away for a while.

If you want to buy a German built quality and reliability ‘orphan’, I wish you well, not my problem.

And that's the problem isn't it.
I think the Germans generally build things well, and are on the whole well-engineered. (Although their advantage is becoming less and less as time goes by.)
But now days when so many problems can be caused by a random glitch in a computer chip, who's to say they are any more reliable? Especially when the components may have come from anywhere.

For all their "Germanness" Opel are cellar dwellers of their industry/market. It's perhaps telling/appropriate that they are sold in the UK as Vauxhalls.
I haven'y heard much about the Insignia, but from all accounts the Corsa is rubbish, and the Astra whilst ok, is no competition for a Focus or Golf.
