Default 1985 Telstar electrical problems

Hi, my mate has a old 1985 2 litre Telstar with a fairly serious problem. The car is regularly killing batteries within a few months. If you put a voltmeter across the battery when the engine is running everything seems to be normal for a minute or two after starting, with the meter reading around 13.8 volts (higher than the static battery charge). There is a noticeable jump in system voltage when the alternator kicks in. The thermo fan comes on when the motor reaches the right temperature, but when it switches off, the battery discharges very rapidly (around a volt every forty seconds) until it reads less than 10 volts and still falling. Despite this, the alternator does not try to compensate for the voltage drop. The previous owner bridged the fan plug to make the fan work whenever the ignition was on, but plugging it back the way it was supposed to be doesn't help.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
