I'd be interested to see what happens when they swap out the tyres.

Quote:
Even running with DSC on and letting the electronics manage the wheelspin resulted in 5.2sec 0-100km/h and a 13.3sec quarter mile.

It appears the blame lies with the tyres. The rear Pirelli P Zeros still had plenty of tread and worked well on the road, but the suspicion is they were past their best in terms of ultimate performance and with this level of torque, they need to be at their best!

This isn't the end of the story, as we have plans to give the Sprints their best chance of running the numbers they're capable of.

It seems they really are trying to give the sprints every opportunity to run the times they are capable of. Interested to see the re runs and what the 6 can do.

I wonder how the XR6 Sprint would've fared.

Swap tyres, and possibly swap drivers?
They should be throwing in the 6 too.

The Clubsport is the superior of the two chasis.

It's pretty amusing though, considering the XR8 next year will be reborn with the same spec engine as the FG GT, could you imagine being a HSV owner forking out all that money on a brand new GTS, then pulling up to the lights next to a FH XR8 and then sitting side by side all the way to 100 and beyond
Even more embarrasing would be the lower spec variants of the VF in HSV's stable getting whopped by a factory XR8.

Its all one eye in my opinion.. look at the re run of the gtf vs gts. The first run they made a note of not letting the gtf warm up. Even still they are comparing a premium hsv to a car you can (could?) buy off a ford lot. Give it a year and let the used car reviews tell the story.

Might make it a little quicker in first gear, but after that, the video is pretty clear - the HSV has its measure comfortably once rolling. Considering the price difference, it's hardly a defeat though, is it?

Those LSA Clubsports definitely have some balls. The XR6 Sprint will need to be quite a bit faster than the XR8 if it's going to challenge the GTS. I think it might.

I agree with what you say.

But what I can say, is that my FGX XR8 with intercooler was MUCH closer to a new BMW M3 than the Sprint 8 was to the HSV, and that was me giving the M3 the start off the line. The M3 is 4.1 seconds to 100.

My car had 275 Nexen SU1s on rear.

What this says to me is that those tyres on the sprint were not working, or an intercooler on a Miami makes that big a difference, or a combination of both.

In any event, get an intercooler and tune and on my experience with the BMW M3, you will have a Sprint or XR8 for some $8,000 extra that goes faster in acceleration than the HSV or the BMW M3- and that there is serious bang for your buck....

Ford has given a great engine that is detuned and non intercooled, the M3 and HSV supercharged versions are all intercooled. Intercool the Ford and tune to even the playing field....

Most people seem to forget the intercooled LSA is around 20 percent larger in cubic capacity over the Miami, and with a price tag that is not comparable to the Sprint's.

Imagine what you could do with an XR8 Sprint and $20k in your pocket

If you ask me, it's amazing how that non-intercooled 5.0 makes 97% of the LSA's torque output from the factory !

Not what I expected. LSA walks away. The roll ons show it. Tyres won't make that much difference.

The sprint 6 will get closer. But it don't think it will beat it

Perhaps 97% of peak torque, but the LSA delivers more of it more of the time thanks to those cubes.

Not sure what you mean here, I don't think the roll on showed the R8 walking away at all.

What I saw in the roll on was the cars staying even for the first part, then you hear the XR8 change gears and the R8 pulls ahead a bit and stays at an even point ahead for a few seconds. Then the XR8 catches up again to be more or less even again. I don't know if that's because they backed off or the R8 changed gears because you cant hear its engine noise.

This is also supported by this statement from the article.

Quote:
After all, both cars recorded identical 2.5sec 80-120km/h times.
Was the R8 a manual or auto?

Unfortunately can't match cubic inches , would be interesting to see an intercooler fitted to sprint and redo to race.

Given the conditions and result I don't think the sprint was operating outside overboost so I don't think adding an intercooler would change the result.

Dont forget if it's cool and you haven't been driving hard for a long time you'll pretty much always be on overboost. It's only once the intake temps get up it pulls things back.

You can hear the XR8 tyres howling for the first half of the drag...but that makes no difference to the roll on- the reality is, the LSA has more torque and power than the Miami across the rev range and it appears to make better use of this, despite being a much heavier car.

An intercooler provides a denser air charge, putting aside timing, so there is a benefit of itself.

But the real benefit of the intercooler is that you can enable the Miami to have a more aggressive tune, ie a tune that the engine with intercooler was designed to run on.

The LSA has an intercooler, and has a tune with that component in place.

The Miami was designed to run an intercooler in the intake plenum, but Ford pulled it and the tune was detuned to balance no intercooler.

I know, if my car is tuned and gets 50 kw more at the rear, my XR8 will be faster than a turbo M3...traction up to 70 kph being another issue.

I also think that the LSA will be quicker than a 6 sprint, the Ford boys testing the Sprints said the fastest on optimum take off was a manual Sprint 8..although that is code for the Sprint 6 being quicker more often in real world.

But I agree with what others have said, the Sprints and XR8 are doing amazingly well against a LSA which is supercharged, running a tune tailored to the intercooling, and with a price tag to match.

Very simple to stomp LSA, intercool and tune....

a 6.2 supercharged 400kw against a 5.0 supercharged 345kw, the Holden should win everytime.
why not measure equivalent cars price cars like an VF11 SS-Redline 304kw with the FG-X sprint 345kw

both with the same brand of tyre and same transmission

I remember reading here about how the xr8 has more power at the treads and was going to spank the clubsport. Didn't really happen did it? But as a 63k machine against a 80k machine it proves it is great bang for bucks. SS will get a hiding though.

I thought I'd gather some information and demonstrate why the XR8 Sprint will probably always get whooped by the GTS. It basically all comes down to the chosen final drive ratio: HSV uses a 3.27:1 ratio where the Sprint (and indeed all other falcons with the ZF 6HP) uses a 2.73:1 ratio. Please see graphs below. Sprint torque curve is on overboost.

The final graph considers the weight of the vehicle (approx kerb weights from the info I could find) and typical tyre dia for the sizes listed. It DOES NOT include drive line losses- I think the Sprint picks up a little bonus here by having a marginally more efficient power delivery.

I'd be interested in a XR6 vs XR8 sprint. The HSV has more traction, and more power. You can see it pulling away from the XR8.

The HSV is definately quicker, 1/4 and roll ons. Obviously it has a better rear end and tyres. FPV improved its tyres but this isnt enough to out run the HSV.

In isolation doesn't seem on the money though still....
"Even running with DSC on and letting the electronics manage the wheelspin resulted in 5.2sec 0-100km/h and a 13.3sec quarter mile. "

Don't think the LSA would have gone down regardless, one thing you have to give them credit for is remarkably consistent performance.

Look at the video again. You can clearly see the HSV increasing its lead over the XR8. It's reflected in the terminal speeds.

Now, where's the XR6 results?

I'm expexting the XR6 Turbo Sprint to be faster than a VF GTS, as this is the info that was leaked to Dowling by FoA. If it's not quicker then they were blowing steam up their own asses yet again. Sick of it.

oh yeah and to the dudes at ford that claimed the manual xr8 sprint would be quicker than the turbo and auto xr8 sprint, Give us a SPELL
