Yes I know. I'm gunna get flamed. But my sister needs help.
She has a thing for HSV and just 'wanted one', so she got one. She bought a Clubsport R8. After owning it for a couple of weeks she noticed that the build number in the computer system that displays it on the dash, does not match the build number on the compliance plate in the engine bay. When she went back to the dealer, their suggested fix is to get the right numbers on a compliance plate from HSV and just swap them! Sounds decidedly shonky to me. Has anyone ever heard of this happening, and if so, what was the fix? She did put a call through to HSV and is waiting for a call back. And because it is over $50K value, Dept of Fair Trade won't help. |

Over 50 k and they won't help???? Owch.
Is the dealer a large chain or a small independant business?? Did your sister do any independant checks in the vehicle prior to purchase? Could it have been a repaired write off???

It's a large chain and a brand new vehicle. Fair Trade it seems won't help because it's worth over $50K. I gather that is the limit of their authority going by what she was told. It seems ludicrous to me.

Brand new?????
Are the numbers just flipped or totally different??? Seems odd. Their fix is assuming that the plate is wrong and the dash is correct. What if it were the other way around? I would accept their fix with proof that there is an error in the plate. Wouldn't be easy to sort out down the track when two R8's appear with the same build number!

Sounds more like its got the wrong cluster in it for whatever reason.
Does the engine and VIN plate show the same numbers? |

A mate of mine bought a HSV Coupe second hand - it was number 005 on the cluster but not on the compliance plate. HSV sorted it out for him by supplying as new plate (the cluster belongs to the VIN and that all matched so it was only the plate that was incorrect and came about because "005" was a special order out of sequence so the plate that was attached was the one in sequence).

Dealer has offered to help by getting a new compliance plate from HSV... So what is the problem? It's obviously an error on their part... She's not going to get a new car that's for sure.

Can't they reconfigure the cluster number instead of changing compliance plate? What if one day another HSV comes up with the same compliance plate number if HSV is just handing them out?

Before letting them change the compliance plate, she should ask them to show her why that's incorrect and not the cluster.

My understanding from what our mate went through is that the cluster is linked to the VIN and the plate is not actually a compliance plate - it's just the HSV build plate (you can't actually replace the vehicles compliance plate since that has it's unique VIN etc)

The plate you are talking about is not a compliance plate. It is a build number plate. It is the same as the GT having the build number in the car. You can also buy these plates off eBay and engrave your own. My guess would be the cluster would be the correct number and the car when it was built was out of order on the production line. Just get HSV to replace the plate.

Assuming the car got out of sequence during production and cluster is correct but just has incorrect build plate... Does that mean that her correct build plate is now fitted to someone else's car?

Yes I would say so, but it is similar to the FPV build numbers, you can request a build number and the numbers mean nothing. So on my GT the build number is 263, but it does not mean it was the 263rd GT built. It could of been the 1000th car but someone wanted number 263 and ordered that.

This is how I understand it:
The build number is made of the final four digits of the VIN. In this case, 1417. The VIN and the number that is displayed on the screen are correct. The plate in the engine shows the build number as 1517 or some such. None of the other HSV's that were checked had that anomaly. It doesn't seem kosher that it was just a simple mistake. What we are afraid if is that there is a bigger problem somewhere in there involving some sort of fraud. No, she isn't looking at scoring a new car. Although hers is still new. But I this is an issue, she wants it sorted before it goes to far. I can just picture the dramas she would have reselling it in a few years time if it isn't sorted. So the FPV's have the same scenario? If you so, and you guys came across it would you be happy to just have the dealer change out the plates? |

I'd be all over HSV ASAP. Any issues with compliance plating and numbering would see me and many others walk away from this car as a used vehicle. I would assume I has been rebirthed. Obviously, in this case as a new vehicle it won't have been.
The VIN is the key identifier, make sure they change the cluster and build to match. And get a letter from HSV confirming all of it. Failing that. Dig in and ask for another car as this ones identity is comprised. They will fix it shortly after that.

Yes it is NOT the compliance plate... just HSV build plate (like Tickford once fitted) HSV will do up another build plate at their end and ship to the dealer for exchange, the dealer will have to send the incorrect one back to HSV to be distroyed. Hardly worth getting stressed about when its fixable. |

Thanks for clearing that Jocool, that the cluster ID is correct. Do any authenticity papers come with the car? The fact they made a mistake at the factory, is there some HSV registry listing build numbers, model, colour etc, which may then become incorrect?
It seems very careless of HSV to make such an error to the important build plate under the bonnet, especially if JC's mate had a similar problem, and I suspect there would be others, makes a mockery of this plate. I remember HDT kept a close record of their numbers, there is also a book available listing all HDT cars by build number, there would have been an outcry if there was an error like this. |

Here you go make your own plate.
http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com.au/vi...id=64136100030 I am not sure why people are saying the car is a rebirth, it's a simple mistake. As I have said HSV will fix the plate issue. |

Why can't you ask this in a HSV forum?

I joined a HSV forum and they still haven't sent my email confirmation of my membership. And yes, we have put a call through to HSV and are awaiting a reply.
From what you guys have suggested, it's not an improbable mistake to have been made. And the consensus seems to be that a replacement plate is all that is called for. If that is all it is, then I'm happy to accept it. But I have never come across this myself so have no experience of it. Thanks for all your input boys. I really appreciate it. |
