I know my dealers deliverying 40 cars today and has had a very big month!

Has anybody got some advance numbers prior to the release of the vFacts data? How are the eGas models selling? And are there many orders for the new Turbo Territory model?

According to the latest GoAuto e-news they are speculating that Toyota sold about 6,000 Corollas, Holden sold about 5,000 Commodores and Ford sold about 4,000 Falcons.

I estimated about 7,500 odd local Holdens sold. All should be revealed tomorrow.

For the love of blaven why wont people buy something better than a Corolla. There are genuinely better alternatives (oodles of them infact).

Astra, Focus, Civic, the list goes on. Even the 3 is excellent (if a little unrefined noise-wise inside).

Why wont people learn.

Because Toyota gave the fleet companies a great deal. They are mainly fleet company sales.

I read a story that Toyota had a backlog as they were short of stock so caught up in June when a new shipment arrived.

Much the same for the locally manufactured models except for the LWB models which held their ground. The imported models didn't have as good a month as in May but were still up significantly on the corresponding month in 2005.

Sales of the locally manufactured models continue to be down significantly compared to last year . For the imported models only the Barina showed an increase.

72% of Ford vehicles sold in June 06 are Australian made.
51% of Holden vehicles sold in June 06 are Australian made.


For June 2006 the fuel types were as follows:

Petrol - 76,784 (82.1%)
Diesel - 14,854 (15.9%)
LPG - 1,548 (1.7%)
Hybrid - 295 (0.3%)

Total - 93,481 (2,967 heavy commercial vehicles not included)

For June 2005 the fuel types were as follows:

Petrol - 86,056 (86.8%)
Diesel - 12,045 (12.2%)
LPG - 801 (0.8%)
Hybrid - 175 (0.2%)

Total - 99,077 (3,068 heavy commercial vehicles not included)

Dedicated petrol powered vehicles lost more than 4% of their market share. All non petrol powered segments increased sales compared with June 2005.

Holden actually have lost the most market share out of all the car makes in OZ.

With the realease of a new model very soon holden sales have taken a good fall, and im sure this is the period they hate with VZ's coming out of their ***** that they wanna get rid of, be prepared for some awesome deals coming up. Also those in the market for a new car that aren't as ford biased, with not a very high budget keep your eyes open for this, or go and do some haggling with salesmen.

Good to see diesels starting to climb so high. more and more will be bought witht he up coming territory diesel and the VEII supposedly with a weapon of a 3.0 diesel. not to mention Ive noticed alot of those great little diesel golfs and polo's on the road (polo, might be small beut worth it for the outstanding fuel economy)

I think ford should hit back with a little ford focus and fiesta dies now, otherwise they will have a smaller market in the area thats rising so much at the moment..... small cars.

Petrol cars are getting more and more economical

Diesels are getting more powerful, less economical (with increasing emissions control) and the price of diesel makes for a very dubious cost, benefit equation. It's different in Europe where diesel is actually cheaper, here though....the sums don't stack up..

Very quick down and dirty overview using the Holden Astra as an example:

Astra Diesel
Cost $29,990
Fuel Consupmtion 6.0 ltr / 100
Diesel Price: $1.4231 ltr (From Fuel Watch Website)

Astra CDX Petrol
Cost $24,990
Fuel Consupmtion 7.8 ltr / 100
Diesel Price: $1.3231 ltr (From Fuel Watch Website)

And this is what this means from a mileage / fuel cost standpoint. Diesel Savings

20,000 km year save $356.32
50,000 km year save $890.70
100,000 km year save $1,781.60

So for an average family doing 20,000 km a year, it's gonna take 14 years for fuel savings to make up the price premium.

At 50,000km it's a 5 1/2 year payback

At 100,000km its still nearly a 3 year pay back

So unless you keep your cars for a long time and / or do extremely high mileage, diesel doesn't make sense for small cars. But marketing hype will get plenty of people to buy them, and most will never realise that they are still out of pocket come the time they turn their cars over.

"Cleaner, More Powerful, More Refined" Diesels are coming / here, but its marketing over substance, especially when petrol engines are becoming cleaner, and more efficient as well. An honest advert would add

"but your fuel savings will never cover the price premium we charge"

The astr adiesel will be more expensive than the petrol because it has a lot more goodies that the CDX, compare the golf FSi and Tdi. 1500 premium.

Price Difference $2500

At 20,000 km per annum

FSI $2112 Fuel
TDI $1618 Fuel

A $500 difference

At 20000 km still a 5 year payback
At 40,000 km 2.5 years

So if you're on a 2 year lease and or low km's they don't make sense...

Up the mileage and ownership period and yep...the sums may begin to stack up.

The point I was trying to make was that people are buying diesels think of the fuel savings rather than whole of onwership..

And don't forget, take that $2500 difference at a standard finance rate and that TDI is costing an extra $250 a year interest...(simplistic I know there are other running costs) but throw it into the mix and suddenly it's 10years to recoup those running costs at 20,000km p.a.

It's worth doing the sums before you buy a diesel for the savings.
