should i sell the xr8 or catch the train to work

I got a job close to home so I bought my AU3 XR8, in blueprint as it was everything i wanted
now i'm buying a house 60km away from work as its all i can afford and keep my lifestyle (eg. huge garage and nice house and 2500sm block)

i can drive to work and do 600km a week and cost me about $140
sell the XR8 and buy a 4cyl and will cost me about $70 per week
or catch the train and leave my xr8 at a train station $50 per week

i still have my project car v8 which i won't sell
just don't know what to do, i guess i'll catch the train and leave it at the station

keep the xr8 but then you don't really want to be leaving it at a train station every day is there maybe a bus from your house to the station ?

i vote sell xr8 get 4cylinder. not sure where you are but i caught the train to work every day for a few years a bit longer trip than yours and brisbane trains are slow, uncomfortable and unreliable. at least in your own car you are the master of your own destiny and if there is a delay you can choose a different route on the way.

me personally would not leave my car at any train station. as you are buying the house its going to be a long term situation ill look at getting a cheap daily on gas.

600km would require a refill in my xr8, unfortunately. and it costs me about $70 to fill up with 98 ron

if you can claim to be carrying bulky items to work your journey (and the expenses incured) are tax deductible

My opinion.

Go and buy a cheap runabout - circa EB (on gas perhaps) to drive and leave at the train station. Then you won't be devastated the first time you get home and some d#ckwad has opened the door of their Civic into your car.

Don't get rid of the XR8. How many stories do you hear from guys who wished they didn't sell what they had (regardless of if it was an XY GT or a Cortina). If you can afford to keep the XR8. Keep it.

Then, when you do get the chance to drive it, you'll love it even more.

Get a Toyota Prius, the new Prius C, (3.7 L/100 km's), you are then the master of your own destiny when it comes to getting to work reliably and on time and you can pay it off with the fuel savings. My 2 cents.

haha so many different thoughts
i'm a drafty so push a mouse all day
i have 3 cars already so i can't get another without selling one and the vh wagon will be kept as it will be on club rego next year and is not really worth much and the vx wagon is the misus' car and she won't let me sell that.
the xr8 was a spur of the moment thing because i missed the last one
i guess i won't do anything drastic yet i'll drive for a few weeks and train for a few and see what i want to do.
i get about 13l/100km so i would need about 80-90l of fuel and at $1.50+litre(premium as its a series 3) thats $120 min.

how long would it take to drive to work?
how long would it take to get the train?

do you have to swap trains?
is work close to a train station?

Put the XR8 on gas, got a mate that did that to his BA GTP, does 1000 kms a week on gas, and still the performance of a proper 8 when the weekend comes.
Especially if the trip is freeway driving, gas usage and petrol usage are quite comparable, less so for city driving.

Try the train out for awhile, then drive and weigh it all up on which was better. Personally I hate trains, but it does allow beers after work every night and that would sell it to me.

train 1h20m all up door to door and only 1 train

trip will be from unanderra to sutherland (nsw)
i have had 3 breakins to my cars at sutherland and kirrawee in the past 15 years and i'd say unanderra would be worse

+1 for cycling to the station if possible. Leave the car at home where it won't get scratched or stolen, it's virtually free and you have the added bonus of getting fitter!

Yes great idea, but does the op have a spare 1hr and 50 mins before and after work every day to ride. And that is averaging over 30km's per hr, for his 60km journey.

How about you drive to work. I hate nothing more than public transport. I would rather spend $180 a week driving and paying $144 for my car park, than catch a train and tram to work.

Public transport does suck, but if it works out to be "time" convenient and doesn't involve transfers, then maybe it's for you. I can't put my old head on your shoulders - having a ride you enjoy driving is grouse, but it won't appreciate in value like a house will. You still have your project car - that will keep you busy enough with coin, as will having a Mrs and maybe kids down the track. IMO - sell the XR and get a cheaper car to run, put the savings into the house payments. What I'm relating to you is concentrate on building up some equity in your house - you can always use that down the track awhile to buy new toys!

Wow... that much cash you pay a week to drive and pay to park could get me 6 months worth of train trips.

No way would I drive and get slugged the enormous fees to park in the city. I would only drive if parking was provided.

I would get an ECOnetic personally over the Prius. Prob save 10 grand as well.

If it were me, I would sell the XR8, concentrate on the project you are working on and buy a cheap run around...

I detest public transport here... only because of how pathetic it is compared to other places.

Melbourne public transport is a joke. The bus to pick me up takes 30 minutes to get to the station. The train takes 48 minutes from my station to the city. The tram from the city station to my work is around minutes. All up that works around 3.5 to 4 hours of travel by public transport a day and that is when the everything is running on time. I have known it to take 3 hours either to or from work.

My Drive to work may cost me heaps more, but it takes me 30 to 40 minutes to drive, from my driveway to the door of my work.

But I do make a choice to drive my GT to work everyday. I could sell it and get something smaller, but that would be no fun.

car pool
there are at least 4 people from my work from the gong so i bet i can convince at least 1 to car pool at least a few days a week.
i did car pool with my boss at my last job but i don't recommend that one unless you like working back for free everyday.

Thats the problem with car pooling... you all need to follow a similar timetable at work, and have a set before and after work routine..

I tried car pooling with local people in my course when going to Uni. Lasted about 2 weeks...
