Default Castrol EDGE

I'm almost due for an oil change in the XR and I'm looking at using Castrol EDGE. What would be the best to use, the 0w-40, 5w-30 or the 10w-60? The engine has 50k on it and uses a tiny bit of the Nulon that I have been using but I'm not sold on the fact that it is the engine's fault. I had a problem in my EL where it would lose a bit of the Nulon stuff but wouldn't with anything else.

What do we think?

Thumbs up

Personally I run Castrol Magnatec. Have done for many years. I had an Eb years back that had a top end rattle on cold starts.... only lasted a few secs but drove near batty. (keep in mind this was a brand new engine) I was put on to Magnatech by a young bloke at my local ford dealership and it cured the problem instantly. So needless to say am a big fan of Castrol products.
At the end of the day all you can do is give it a go and see how it performs.

Im using Castrol Edge 5W-30 in my 1 tonner at the moment as it was on sale the otherday not noticing any real difference between this and the Nulon I normally use.

Hmm. I used Castrol EDGE once and I wasn't overly impressed with it really. I found thatit made the top end nice and rattly on start up. I am currently using Valvoline VR1 Racing in 10w-40 and so far (2000km's) it seems up to the task.

The T3 is just over 100k and have used Mobil 0/40 for ages....have tried Fuchs after hearing good raps but I kept hearing to many rattles at cold start.
Just put in ELF 10/50 Full Synthetic purring like a kitten will use again.

I put Valvoline Durablend 10/40 and its the best oil i have used so far. I have never had any funny noises on cold start up, never burns oil and I feel like it is protecting the engine really well.
As far as Castrol EDGE goes i have never tryed that product.
What rating is the NULON oil that you got in your car now? Base your next oil change a little thicker then that if its burning a bit of oil.

I tried GTX3 and my motor got a bit noisy so changed it to shell helix and motor shut up again. I'm not a fan of castrol anymore after that.

I use Castrol Edge in the I6, in 5w/30 which is the recommended grade in the AU1. I'd go the 10W/60 in a Wheezer as it's old school and probably has looser tolerances.

Unusual to have recommendations for Magnatec and Valvoline here, most AUvians who've tried these swear at them, not by them. But then most of them have 6's. I found my top end was noisy with Valvoline Durablend FWIW and has quietened down with going back to Edge. So maybe what works well in the I6 doesn't in the V8 and vice versa.

The wheezer may have looser tolerances from factory but this was built well and tight. the Nulon is a 15w50 but the oil burning is the oil, not the engine. Nulon likes to burn a bit for some reason I've found, I use the same amount if I use the 10w40. No more no less.

Bluedriver what was the elf worth for 5l?

Russ I used Edge for a bit but didnt like it, Im using Penrite atm but by far the best I have found for mine is Shell Helix 15w50. Trying to convince the boss at Ricerbarn to get more in.

There Quality is not what they used to be, they are made in thailand now.
I used to swear by them till they started to import the other Motorcraft Thailand filters wich costed much less( the workshop used any where between 30 40 filters a week), know there is only the Thailand filter available.
There are better filters out there, with greater quality paper and relief valve.

It is a buyer beware market as motorcraft DO NOT make there own filters.
Ryco made them for Motorcraft, not any more as it is cheaper to sorce them else where, And more profit $$$$$$$$$$$$.

Cheers Mick.

I use pentrite 10w oil and K&N oil filter. The filters cost a little more..$18 from Autobarn. Figure K&N make good air filters so the oil ones shouldn't be to bad...also Autobarn lock them away in a glass case..so they must be desirable..lol

Yep I use the PureOne (top Purolater filter) for ages so has Shaynet (both of us had bought them in qty) and a few other TSeries guys have, just harder to get nowadays.
Russell I'll check up what the Elf costed can't remember right now.
Using the T3 today each time I started I thought how smooth she sounded with this Elf oil.

How many Elfs had to die to make one bottle of oil? How many babies for one bottle of baby oil? Sorry, couldn't resist.

No help to you Russell, but I bought Castrol Edge 5W30/40 when it was one sale at Supercheap a few weeks back. It was just on half price (around $25 or something for 5 litres). Bought it for the Exploder, but may just use it as top up oil, as I also have a bottle of the Penrite 5W40/50, so might use that for the fill.

I usually use Penrite HPR 10 in both my 6s and V8s, and I've never had any (oil related) issues at all.

I have been using the Castrol Edge 5W30 in the Territory ... works pretty good.
And especially I need 2 bottle of the stuff to change the oil in the Territory ... I took advantage of the 50% off like JC mentioned.

I was told that if you have the details of the clearances your stroker was built to, you can give that info to an oil company and they can tell exactly what viscosity oil you need. theres a big difference between 5w-30 and 10w-60. I reckon you'd want to know what you actually need rather than guess.

I was planning to start using Redline once my engine's run in properly. It costs a bit but apparently lasts 40000km+ between changes. you can get analysis kits too and just change filters at the normal interval and grab a sample of the oil to get analysed and they'll advise if you're getting close to needing an oil change. the analysis doesn't cost much either I think it was around $35 all up and gives you an indication of the condition of your engine too...

Hey Russell, there are plenty of good Quality filters out there.
K&N , FRAM but make shure it is FRAM RACING, also Purolator but there are 2 types.
Also as a guide hold a Z89 standard filter in your left and pick up eather one of these filters that i have mentioned in the other hand, and you will notice the weight diffrence.

Cheers Mick

So far I am very impressed with this stuff. It is less rattly and seems happier on it, still using the same old standard Purolator filter though as it is impossible to find quality parts in Ballarat.

I used to put in Castrol Edge and when new it was good stuff but I found it 'deteriorated' a lot quicker than other oils. By 5,000km the engine was more rattly than usual, I wouldn't have wanted it in much longer. Went back to Penrite with no dramas.
