Cool Chinese cars

Hi all
I just watched Top Gear tonight aside from JC Capt slow acting like idiots
it wasnt too bad they showed some Chinese cars actually about 10 of them
they all seemed to be copies of Euro cars and they tested a pretend Rover
and also a pretend MG they looked OK to me
but some of the other ones were horrible
they said the cars were really crappy
we seem to have got the best ones (Cherry and the Greatwall)
if thats the case god help us if the Chinese send out the others
any thoughts John

Just great how they copy designs and say you cant sue them.
The car built off an old Alfa platform looked sort of not bad. How it would fare in a crash is another question though.

^^^Exactly and one reason why you'd give any Chinese car a wide berth for the next 10 years or until they get their act together with R&D, engineering for crash safety and modern, efficient drivetrains

Each time I see a Great Wall van or light truck with no protection in front (ie. no bonnet in front of the driver), I wonder about whether the employer thinks at all about the safety of their employee, also considering those vehicles have only 2 or so safety stars.

The middle class in china are growing and they will want western cars.

I took some Chinese singaporeans around Sydney yesterday, they loved the space and design of the falcon.

They pay something like up to 50k Aussie for the right to own a car. There is an auction for rego-seriously.

Nice people, loving their visit here and impressed by our cars.

A lot of people thought jap cars were naff 30 years ago now the quality and perception.

It would be nice to get some Chinese money and investment into ford and form a partnership here and export stuff around the world.

I'd love to get some Chinese money and investment into creating parts/complete replicas of Falcons from years gone by. With the cheap labour and r&d, could even build all those cool concepts Ford themselves couldn't do (crewcab ute, coupe). Could have the freedom to mix/match design cues of each model, or fix the rough edges of some models like the AU. Probably use the american stuff (ecoboost v6/miami 8) for the running gear. Call it Blue Oval Motors just for laughs .

...then for christs sake don't have a close look around most cars and see where they...or a lot of components...are made...it's either China, India, or Taiwan or Indonesia. Even the big Jap makers get a lot of vehicles made there instead of Japan.

And yep, I'm old enough....just...to remember when Jap cars were virtually laughed at. The tide started to turn in the mid seventies, around the time my old man bought a brand new Mazda 929 wagon. It had air, disc brakes, push button am/fm ("what's FM dad?"..."dunno son"... ) radio cassette stereo with four speakers, and cloth interior. Our neighbour at the time had a new Holden Vacationer special edition wagon, and it didn't have half that stuff standard.
After them, it was those damn Koreans and their funny little Hyundais...

I agree...in a few years we'll be laughing at someone elses cars.

It quite interesting seeing where some Ford/holden parts are made...

Errrr, they OWN Rover & MG, [soon to return to Oz] i suppose its then ok for them to look like Rovers and MG's

The also own 1 of the old SAAB 9000? platforms, and numerous Italian platforms AlfaRomeo 164/166 models, together with some Lancia platforms and other, all now being reborn and manufactured again.

They are trying to buy SAAB [wtf for, but anyway] but GM will not allow them to compete with China made GM products, as most SAAB's are just GM products in a pretty frock with GM technology used.

In any case, VW, Benz, BMW sell more vehicles in China than any other market, and in a few short years time, ALL the Luxo brands, ie Rolls, Bentley, Ferrari etc etc, China will be the #1 volume market.

CHINA IS THE #1 CAR MARKET ON THE PLANET!

Wonder what Chinese think of Ecoboost Falcons, they could by 100,000/pcs no sweat!

When i was in China i saw some new brands at a trade show and the quality was vastly superior to the Falcodores, much better than Korean, right up with Lexus in quality, they have purchased every luxury vehicle for sale around the world, fully stripped and reverse engineered it.

NOT automatically cheap though.[Get what u pay for]

I saw some abolute RUBBISH at the trade show too, hey it was only $5k brand-new.

The Chinese prefer "brand-names" [even if made in China] than the home made product, they are very label-sluts

Taiwan has some home made products, brilliant vehicles, not cheap and NOTHING to do with sister China, they are more like Japanese quality/price

In the big cities, [hardly] nobody has or rides a bike anymore, minimum are scooters as basic transport of every shape/type/form and of course bloody cars/vans/trucks everywhere 24x7

I enjoyed my trips to China, if i was young and single i would have moved over there, you can make serious coin just by speaking English and knowing your own home market.

Its funny because VW, Benz and BMW are all made in China just for the Chinese market.
