Default Olive Oil (Australian)

We’re just about through our most recent 3 litre tin of Aldi house brand Aussie oil (“The Olive Tree”) - which I think was a Cobram Estate product inside.

Now it looks like the product has been punted for an imported one. :-(

I’d like to buy Australian. Has anyone here found a good substitute for the Aldi item at a sensible price? I’ve noted the supermarket costs on Cobram estate, but are there any smaller producers offering a competitive (by price, quality) product?

We use about 6 litres/year, so serious bulk buying isn’t really an option. Even a producer that’s not too far out the way on a Sydney-Melbourne run (Swan Hill is probably a sensible limit to detours) might be an option.

Plenty of stuff to follow up there, thanks. Definitely put me in the mood for bruschetta!

CB, at that useage rate, I’d suggest buying in smaller bottles.
The “goodness” of olive oil is quickly lost to oxidation.

we go through quite alot of olive oil.
Buy aussie and imports - need base's, 1L to 5L depending price.
My only gripe typically anything aussie is higher price, we still buy either just depends the timing whats on "sale".

There’s a global shortage at the moment, due to weather conditions in some of the major producer areas.
Don’t expect prices to return when production does!

Re the degradation/oxidisation… I decant from the large tin into a smaller “working bottle”, the tin goes to the back of a cool, dark cupboard and the bottle at front. So its life is optimised.

Good to know of apparent shortages - but what happened to all the tax break plantations? Are they gone, or just putting out rubbish product?

Aldi still sell the 1L Aussie Olive oil in bottles.

You mentioned Swan Hill, closer to Albury is Rich Glen estate at Yarrawonga. (Pretty cool little brewery up the road at Bryramine also)

Not yet, I went to take the empty 3l tin out of the back of the bottom cupboard and discovered it still had a good 750ml in there. (Thought it was empty.)

So I’ve avoided making a decision so far. Leaning towards smaller quantities, as suggested.

My skim-reading of those articles suggests they’re saying that if you go mad with it, or get stuck in after not having much, your risk of cardiac issues increases. I’m more likely to die from cancer or dementia, based on family history.

Anyway - Aldi must have found a few extra crates of their rebranded Aussie 3 litre tins, as I snagged one tonight. Expiry 25/10, next year. If I’ve got much left near then and the clock is running down, I’ll make bruschetta for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
