Got this email today thought some people might like to read it and see the pictures. I think i wouldn't have been able to keep it thought i would have had to let that big beauty go.
THIBODAUX , La. --A medical student who blindfolds his friends to keep his favorite offshore fishing spot secret has come up with a record-beating fish -- a warsaw grouper weighing 359.1 pounds. The giant hauled in by J.J. Tabor of Thibodaux is 12 ounces above the previous Louisiana state record, a state biologist confirmed. It's been cut down to fillets. The first fillet weighed 53 pounds, Tabor said. He caught it near an oil rig 70 miles south of Fourchon, in 400 feet of water. He won't give a more specific description. 'It's J.J.'s secret,' said Joey Rodrigue, a friend from Baton Rouge who joined Tabor and Tabor's father, John, on the record-making trip Saturday. 'I don't even know where I was. He blindfolds us on the way out.' Tabor said he thought at first that his hook with a live hardtail on it had it the bottom 'until I felt the big head shake.' Rodrigue steered away from the rig. 'I put myself in a harness and just had to lay back and fight,' J.J. Tabor said. 'It was about a 15 or 20 minute fight.' Tabor cleaned the fish late Monday afternoon outside his father's auto repair shop in Thibodaux. 'We'll split it up,' he said. 'I'll make some phone calls and try to get rid of it fresh. The rest, we'll vacuum pack it and cook it later.' Tabor says he believes the fish is about 33 years old. He plans to send an inner-ear bone called the otolith to a university in Florida where researchers can help determine the age of the fish. He hopes to get the results in about four weeks. The world record, caught off Florida in 1985, is 436 pounds, 12 ounces.      |

Woah that's a big fish.
But seriously? 15 to 20 minute fight? Must of been a pretty lazy fish. I fought a shark on the barrier reef which was only 2 metres long for a good hour. In my opinion, no matter how big the fish is, if it didn't fight well, what's the point? Mind you, I'd be pretty proud of that monster!!

Thats massive! Seems like a shame to let a 33yo fish die like that. Catch it and then throw it back I say.

Huge fish...but I'de reckon something like that would taste like crap. Usually old and oversizes fish are very tough eating, tropical ones with high mercury levels.
I'de rather eat the wahoo on the far left on the shot with the other fish- they are one of the best tasting and fighting fish in the sea |

you can't release a fish thats been hauled out of 130m of water, its been 'blown' and will not recover. Check it's swim bladder inflated, and protruding from it's mouth.
It is a shame, it would not be as tasty as the little fellars but it was dead well before getting to the surface. And 33 yo. Dreaming. That fish is a LOT older than that.

That is one mega fish!! i wanna catch a celiecanth (definate sp mistake on that)
supposedly live over 100yrs as i recall from the discovery channel.. biggest fish ive caught was a trevally (no idea what sort, the fisherman we were with didnt know either) which was about 8kgs around the port in darwin my bro had a flathead almost 1m long literally diving out of the water in the daintree, we thought it was a barra at first until we got it in lol...

What a shame for the fish. It would taste awful, and the ironic thing is it probably was still wary of sharks less than half its size. What a sad ending to such a big fish, as has been said before its swim bladder would have exploded.
