Default How easy would it be for a car theft to steal an FG?

Very random thread, I know.

But I was pulling in to our apartment complex in my work car this evening and when I was driving down the driveway a strange looking trashy dressed guy walked out from behind the fenced area where our bins are, which backs on to our carports, and the dude looked surprised and startled as my lights shone down there.

He proceeded down the driveway casually. I couldn't find a spare spot so I reversed out straight away and I saw saw him cutting across someones lawn on the corner and proceeding up the road at the intersection.

I've never seen this guy before, and my GS is the only 'nice' car in our complex.

It is under a car port, not locked away.

For arguments sake, say he can't get my keys 'cause they are locked up in my place, could an FG be easily stolen without keys?

This may sound paranoid, but I did used to leave my GS at my parents place, but their area has gone down hill, heaps of scummy people up and down the street constantly, and someone had a significant amount of stuff taken in the area there, not to mention I heard from some people I know 'around' that my car was being talked about, and someone wanted to take it.

So I brang it up to Perth to my place. BTW I live ina fairly nice area, only FPV around, no Commodores at all, just Audi's, BMW's and Mercs.

I hope someone can cure my paranoia and tell me something good

Be careful never to leave keys around the house. There have been cases where people have broken in got the car keys and driven off. Without the keys these things are pretty hard to drive away. They would more likely put it on a tray and strip it for part.

Nothing will stop your car from being stolen if someone really wants it. Insure it well and if you think you are never far enough away from it to get there then get an alarm which alerts you via phone or an alarm that can turn the car off remotely. Members on here have had cars stolen from all sorts of lock ups and with different types of security. Expect it to get stolen and then everytime you see its still there its a bonus. I do.

It's not terribly hard to get inside the car for someone who knows what they're doing, that's where my concern would be. Unless he's got a truck, I wouldn't be too concerned about the car itself being stolen.

Make the car look as unattractive as possible. Hub caps, XT body kit. Sleeper FTW lol. Or stick a hundred antennas on it, and mount something that looks exactly like an MDT on your dash, so it looks like something from the local constabulary so the thief thinks twice.

A car can be stolen easy with a trailer or tow truck. It can be gone in 30 seconds.

Insure the car, dont worry about it. You will live your life happier.

there was an FG burnt out and upside down near mt keira lookout (wollongong) the other week, i wondered how they drive a stolen late model car? i know they can tow them away
but a tow truck driving a senic route at midnight would not look right
this looked like a base model FG so more likely a joy ride or insurance job?
you can get a motion detect cameras that activates when the door opens, saves on a hard drive located in a fireproof box in the car or use a sim card to send to your email/phone along with a gps signal

These days they will break in to your house regardless of whether you are there or not and steal the keys.

I bring the keys with me to work. And I lock my bedroom of a night, so I'd hear them try to get in.

I leave my keys out in the kitchen. If thieves want them and break in they can take the car. I'm not getting bashed, stabbed or stuck with a syringe while I'm asleep so some dead**** can steal my car and wrap it around a power pole or burn it out.

I chain my diff to a pole. If they try and drive away the *** end gets ripped out. (like that movie). Or equip it with explosives that have a remote detonator, when they get to the corner boom.

People place varying levels of importance on their cars. I sleep with the keys to my coupe in fact the keys are always with me. If they want to steal it then it's a fight to the death. Insurance can't really replace a coupe though only the monetary value.

He probably doesn't want the car just whats in it...The least of peoples worries when stealing a car are the keys. There are people that have had chains cut and multiple cars blocking the stolen vehicle all moved within a few mins.

Tray top will take anything if they want. If it's insured, the don't worry about it. You can get tilt sensors and trackers but unless they get caught in the act it's still gone :

Is the carport in your complex owned by you? Ie are you able to modify etc? Maybe adding simple deterrents such as fake cameras (i think they are like $30 from bunnings) or even those yellow fold down "reserved" parking spot frames? Not ultra protective but like I said may deterr someone, putting it into the too hard basket.

In WA 75 out of 9930 FGs were reported stolen in 2012. Rated high risk http://ncars.on.net/rating/theftriskrating.html.
RACVs annual security score for the Falcon is 22/100.
Entry 2/10, Immobiliser 20/50, Vehicle ID 0/40.
http://www.racv.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/7ed766004da9b5ffa9a5f954a1b45993/2012+RACV+Car+Security+Scores.pdf?MOD=AJPERES&CACH EID=7ed766004da9b5ffa9a5f954a1b45993

Have they improved the FG over the AU/BA where a correctly placed insertion to the door handle allowed entry? Had everything stolen from a rental at a supermarket and the NSW Police said check the handle - they were correct. Drove back to Penrith Rowing champs and two others had been done the same way.
