Post I might be chucking the towel in this time

What can I say? I am just destined to have bud luck with my ED, and frankly I am tired of it. 90% of the time it's due to a modification, but where's the fun in modding if it only brings trouble? I'd start a list but I am not in the mood at all.

After only having the T5 in for a few weeks, now my gears are crunching into 2nd and 3rd and struggling to select first. I just bought a new clutch cable that I will fit and see if it changes anything, and if not, it's most likely the synchros I'm guessing (Yagz had the same thing....)

I will see if the box still is under warranty, and if it is, I don't really care because there is no way I can be screwed changing the bastard around.

Well I just had to rant because I am f$#king annoyed to no end and tired of it all. I just want some peaceful driving for once...... And it's a shame because I was ready to spend a decent amount on decent mods.

Anyway, off to work :

Luke, Luke, Luke. You say this every time something goes wrong! Change the fluid, do the cable then start blaming the syncros. It's very unlikely that all three would give up at once.

Damn Luke! My box was very notchy for a couple of weeks, then on the way home from adelaide my passengers and I heard a loud "KACHINK!" noise. One of the pressure plate bolts had let go. New clutch and some new box oil (did the rear main too but thats unrelated), and it's like a new gearbox! It must have been loose for a little while i think, the clutch was shocking, crunching reverse everytime etc... Took around 3 hrs to do all up, and it was worth it.
The box is silky smooth now, and I cant believe i put up with a clutch was so stiff! The new one (standard) is around 1/3 of the weight of the old one (compared to when the old one was ok), it's like it's not even there but it doesnt slip at all!

Yeah I know you blokes get sick of me saying the same thing, but seriously, when will the bastard give me a break??? I'll try the cable myself, and if not, I will take it to a pro and find out for sure. Enough beating about the bush methinks.

And thanks for your offer Damo, but I can't keep relying on you guys!!!!

Luke, how is the fluid in the box? I ask this because Damo had some problems with the one in his EA before changing the fluid. It made a world of difference.

You car has come way too far to give up now mate. If you chuck in the towel I'm sure you'll regret it later on down the track.

send a PM to wbt56, and change the oil to the ATF he uses..There are threads everywhere about similar issues to what you are having and the correct fluid seems to fix alot of them

Dont let these things get to you, it could be something so small that you have over looked. Get a pro to have a quick check and you should be right.

There comes a time when you have invested so much time and money into a car that it is not worth getting rid of.

Unfortunately some of us get to this point with every car we own :( Keep the one you have.

Stationary to 1st... Sometimes it feels like it won't even engage.

On another note, there is a noise coming from around the gearbox when I'm idling, so it isn't looking too good.

The amount of money, my time and other people's time & effort that has gone into it is the only thing holding me back driving it off a cliff LOL!

Update: idle it's making a noise, when the clutch is in it shuts up. But then taking off it's now whining..... Great.

In gear or out of gear? Could it just be some gear chatter or low oil in the gearbox?

I share your pain xrated - been there farnarkling around to keep it useable rather than going forward improving it.

Changing gearbox oil can make an amazing difference to a box's feel.

I used to drive a euro car and experimented with a few different oils. Ended filling the gearbox with Mobil 1 Synthetic. It was the greatest comprimise between gear chatter at idle/startup/shutdown and feel.

In neutral does it still whine?
foot off = input shaft bearing
Foot on = Thrust bearing.

well lets be fair dinkum, you buy a perfectly good car then start stuffing around with it and when something goes wrong people start wingeing and complaining,,well leave the friggin things alone and you won't have so many issues with them.

if it's not broken don't fix it.

In neutral it doesn't whine, just makes a knock-knock kind of sound. It's hard to explain.

I just spoke to a gearbox place, and first thing he said was the clutch... But it's a brand new clutch - unless it wasn't installed properly :S Whoops!! He said the bearings would have no connection as to why 1st is hard to select?

What's a really good transmission fluid? I'll be happy to pay decent money if it's worth it.

And naughtyfalcon - maybe I've learnt my lesson re. modding cars??? But when you have a hobby you don't want to give it up straight away, this is just nearing the end of the line if it proves to be expensive. But thanks for your constructive criticism........ :

After reading your elation in the springs-change-tutorial thread, and now this thread, all I can say (as others have said) is keep at it mate.

Naughtyfalcon is right (in a way... and for those who don't do things 100% correctly, intenionally or unintentionally) regarding modding cars. Mine runs much worse/dodgier than when I bought it 100% stock. But I put spin on this and say it gives the car "character", some of which I hope my mechanic can "remove", but what I'm getting at is, when modding one's car, there are often side effects which can be unwanted. It's just something we have to keep in mind when we tinker around with our cars.

Then again, 100% stock cars can bugger up too. Come to think of it, I had more problems with my car when it was stock than I do now! But those problems were $$$ ones, not "dodgy-mod-which-I-can-fix-myself-...-with-effort" ones.

Anyhoo I'll back off from my egocentric rant and repeat myself: Keep at it ;) It'll cost you some $$$, or take some time to do, or give you grief, but when it's fixed you'll feel better than ever about your car!

Cheers mate,

-Dave-
