Default Pondering a V8 in the SR!

Hi All,

I'm seriously thinking about getting a V8 for the SR.

If the price is doable, I think I'll be going for a 200 with an auto and will partly fund the project by selling the manual I6 bits from the SR. How much would a low kay T5 sell for?

I'll also probably be selling my 2001 VFR800 (a mere 17,000 kms) as it's time for a change to an off road bike. It's in immaculate condition for its age, so will make someone very happy. If you know anyone who's in the market for a great sports tourer, let me know.

I'd keep the LPG bits on the SR and get the V8 hooked up on the good old bbq fuel. The system is an Impco setup. Anyone know how hard it'd be to use the existing setup?

The SR has a 3:7 diff and a 2.5 single Redback sports system. I'm hoping the diff ratio makes up for the reduced performance on LPG. Am I expecting too much? The exhaust will be okay for the V8 right?

Should I do it? Your thoughts are appreciated.

Also, I should add that I don't have the coin to fund the purchase of a dirt bike, and a newer V8 and LPG conversion, hence this option put before you all. LOL!

I spoke to "The Guy" tonight mate...
I'll send you his number and you can talk figures with him if you like..
Also, we may be able to head over and see him some time during the week..!!

I think it's a great idea George...! (but, I would )

You'll need to get your exhaust customised to suit the V8, the single 2.5" thats on mine seems to be doing the job well..

3.7's will definitely make up for the LPG hp loss..

Check out the auctions for a wreck.
Should be able to get a decent 5.0 AU for around the $1000 - $1200 mark (or less depending on the day).
That will give you all the parts you need and plenty left over to recover some costs.

not a 200 or 220..?

Depends what at auction.
Wrecked AU 3 XR8's are going for as little as $1500-$2000 when they are available.

All the xr's with 220's i've seen have gone for around the 3-4K mark...

Sell your bits and trade/sell the car and buy a manual AU1 or 2 XR8 IMO, less stuffing around and you get all the other stuff aswell.

Was searching the other day and there is a dual fuel XR8 for 9kish IIRC in VIC at a dealer.

some times its not the easy... we get attached to the AUs lol...

I reckon go for it George.. If everyone just went out and bought a car and not modified or played around with it, these forums would be a pretty boring place...
Any body can buy a car, but to build "your car", it really is something special...

Yeah I didn't say leave the AU, just dont put money and time into something when it can be done alot easier, and you get the XR looks aswell.

Just a couple on car sales, no doubt you could knock a grand or so off by negotiating.

By the time you get your parts, then time and labour etc its just easier to get something you want ready to go.

What about in the wagon instead? A local guy here did the 220 conversion to a wagon. Very tidy unit.

I did make the point that due to budget constraints, I wouldn't be going the "buy another car" option, so you were absolutely right for trying to head off all such comments Kris.

I think you will have to stick with a single exhaust as i dont think a twin will fit over the diff. It will just have to be modified at the front

Yes but do the maths first, you might be able to get mates rates which is fine but if its going to cost you more than selling what you have and buying something outright then why would you? You wont be able to do the LPG stuff yourself either unless you are certified AFAIK. Then you have new exhaust systems etc etc, it adds up. It would be interesting if Kristo had kept a list of the cost to make his beast, when you can buy a T1 TL50 for about $15k.

Just saying from another POV. Agreed customizing is cool but if your on a budget then wouldn't you want the more cost effective solution?

As I've gotten older I'm always wary of the Law of Unintended Consequences :(

It may be that you can change your car around and have many years of blissful motoring, or, you may turn into the guy who is forever ringing friends to come and pick him up from woop-woop because the <name it> is buggered, or the bolt fell out, or whatever.

I think that if you can accept that the changeover may not be trouble free and the occasional (or weekly) problem may pop up, but that is all countered by the fun and enjoyment of the new donk, then it's only a question of finances.

If I was interested in such a project it would only be on a car that I could afford to be without.

at least its a good conversion, all ford bolt up stuff, might be a few wiring head aches i suspect though, i have to say GK i would be a little worried even selling the old bits it may turn out not a lot cheaper(but with a lot more headaches) than just doing a trade or swap for an au with a v8, but good luck what ever you do.

hmmmm v8 do it i would but im aiming to get the i6 into the 13s manual... Hmmm to i need one....

Why not keep the t5 and put that behind the 8 it will be a better car

The I6 T5 wont work on the V8 mate..
Different input shafts.. too much hassle to try and modify it to work...

say it is 6k , fitted, tuned, new headers and exhaust, lpg workshop etc

you have an exhaust, manual conversion, headers? say 2k worth of goodies, is it worth 4k to you for the rumble?
