Default Dual Intake for less than $10

A little project I completed this evening:-

1.Get a 100mm-90mm PVC adapter from your local plumbing supplies or hardware



While you're there get a 90mm mesh cap



2.Remove airbox from vehicle (remove lid, remove snorkel, undo 3 x 10mm bolts)


3. Mark airbox at appropriate location. Cut away any strengthening ribs that will be in the way.



4. Cut out 90mm circle - I drilled the holes and then used a stanley knife to cut between the holes - BE CAREFUL - Stanley knives are SHARP!!



5. Use a half round file to tidy the opening so that the 90mm end of the adapter is a neat fit.



6. Fit adapter so that the 100mm end is inside the airbox and the adapter is pushed hard up to the tapered section.







7. Fit mesh cap onto 90mm external end of adapter.





8. For ease of airbox installation, remove the mesh end and push adapter far enough into the airbox so that the lower 10mm bolt is accessible.



9. When airbox bolts are tight and snorkel fitted, refit mesh end to adapter.



10. Fit air cleaner element and airbox lid.



Jobs done

The mesh end holds the adapter in place so there is no need for glue, plastic welding etc.

Tools:- 10mm socket/ratchet, pencil, saw, Stanley knife, drill, drill bit, half round file (coarse).

Time:- Took me a couple of hours as I had to double check as well as take pics. Would only take an hour using this guide.

Comment:- Believe it or not, this cheap (less than $10) and easy mod does make a difference. I only went around the block but there is noticeable improvement in throttle response.

That was going to be my next $5 mod ;)

Actually I wasn't going to do it today so didn't have black paint on hand but when I looked at it I thought "what the heck" and got into it...

Throttle is definitely more responsive but other than that I don't know much at this stage.

Main reason I got to thinking about it is that I'm off up north in a few weeks. I'll be using a car bra which you'd expect would cut down the air flow.

I think that with a bit of fiddling I can run a bend and pipe off the adapter and source some more cold air a bit lower.

I'll play with it over the next week or two.

haha i started a new thread the night before u posted this one, asking about dual intakes and well urs is the cheapest and still effective one i came across looks the bit too as i mentioned earlier, can u get the adapter at bigger length so it sits behind the light a little more or is it one size only

you can get a 90mm pvc pipe joiner. It will slide over the end of the adapter (same as mesh cap) and you can cut 90mm pvc pipe to your required length and slide that over the exposed end.

I've got a few pvc bits and pieces down the shed, later on I'll see if I've got the bits and take a pic.

The only joiner I've got has an external thread at one end but it will do to demonstrate - one end for the pipe, the other end to the adapter


If you really want to ram some air in, you can make up this little beauty. Simply remove the headlight and poke it through...

I've done something very similar with my Territory though it extends further and goes well outside the engine bay and under the headlight.

I have one of those threaded connections fixed inside the airbox and carry a screw on cap in the car should I ever want (or need) to drive through really deep water. Just screw it on on to close this 2nd inlet and it's back to the standard over-the-radiator inlet with its greater fording depth.

not a bad little mod. Thanks for the tutorial.

Personally for me I wont need this, but if anyone has an alternate mod for a CAI coming from the front bumper I would be interested to see it.

im working on a air intake at the moment which consists of completely cutting the front wall of the airbox and extending the box towards the xr headlights, should work well

geez guys. for the .25 of a killowatt that all these airbox/intake mods would give you it hardly seems worth it.

id actually be surpirsed if this made more power. my car actaully made less power on the dyno without the airbox and just 3 inch pipe. it leaned out the mixture, and lost power. maybe with a custom tune u might gain a bit. save ur time and money and buy and cam/chip.

how many times have u had a falcon 6 on a dyno with different intake setups back to back???? and seen power, a/f, tourqe changes????

gut loads of air + no tune, doesnt mean more power. simple.

We can always try it and plug the hole if it doesn't work out. G&D sell something for several hundred that rams more air in from behind the headlight and has people claiming it's worth it.

My concern is, as well as with electric inline "superchargers", will the engine's computer simply adjust somehow to the detected change of incoming air and cancel out any positive effect in time?
