I was just on a trip down south and got to thinkin, what ever happened to those two little things that you'd place on the front of the car to repel kangaroos? Pretty sure they ended being a big scam.
Would it be embaressing to admit that you had purchased a set of these many years ago, and has anybody seen these around. They'd near on be some kinda collectors item by now.

Homer: Not a bear in sight. The Bear Patrol must be working like a charm.
Lisa: That’s specious reasoning, Dad. Homer: Thank you, dear. Lisa: By your logic I could claim that this rock keeps tigers away. Homer: Oh, how does it work? Lisa: It doesn’t work. Homer: Uh-huh. Lisa: It’s just a stupid rock. Homer: Uh-huh. Lisa: But I don’t see any tigers around, do you? Homer: Lisa, I want to buy your rock. |

I had these on my AU for an interstate trip from SA to QLD. Bought brand new, stuck them on the lower lip of my front bar, and faced them per instructions.
We nearly ended up hitting about 3 on the way up alone. When I got home, ripped them off and threw them in the bin. Biggest waste of $20 or whatever it cost, ever.

The proper Shuroos actually do work... But most people dont bother with them now.
http://www.shuroo.com/index.php The cheap $10 Supercheap ones are nothing but worthless.

Russell had one here and swore by it. Sold it on Ebay last year and had a bidding war for it. Like most things, the originals are fine but the copies often a let down.
I regret selling it now and wish I had kept it for the new Territory as I drive all over Australia at weird hours perfect for the Roos to find me. Gaela

Yeh I'm pretty sure spercheap still sell them. We bought some a few months ago for a road trip we did, no kangaroos were harmed, but who is to say if they work or not? For $10 it's worth a try |

I think we're confusing two items here:
$10 stick on whistles, their effectiveness is questionable and Shu-Roo's.

Re: "Whistles" .. I've got them on both our daily drivers (sucker!!) .. they cost bugger all and are basically inconspicuous. If they work great .. if they don't then no great loss. My wife didn't have them on her XR6 for the first six months of ownership - until she hit a wallaby - then we fitted them and by coincidence no more incidents (although I believe this is more to do with her now taking "major" roads when driving in the dark). I doubt there is much you can do to stop those pests .. but I do feel safer on my GPz750 with the loud, non-stock exhaust (most animals run away long before you get there)

Mine seem to attract foxes. They sit and look at me coming at them. Seem to be like a rabbit sqeeling, and they are looking for a feed. Alas, the bull bar gets them, or they get Dunlop disease.

They don't work.
They've been proven repeatedly not to work. The electronic ones (Shu Roo, etc) have been proven to be an even more expensive, does-not-work option. (Monash university did a proper double-blind study at Western Plains Zoo to see if there was any effect on wild roos...and no, none.) It's down to luck...I've been driving since 1982, and haven't hit a roo once, only a couple of close calls over all that time. If I fit one of those things, and don't hit a roo for the next thirty years of driving, what do I put it down to? My continued good luck, or the expensive thing I just stuck on the front of my car? http://eprints.qut.edu.au/15299/1/15299a.pdf Quote:

I've got a shuroo on my GT and a set of the american whistlers on my ute.I drove the GT out to where i work (a 300 km trip and usually at night) in central qld for 2 years and the only roo i saw was when the shuroo was'nt working.Same thing with my ute, never had a problem not even a close call and there are a lot of dead roos on the roads out there .Call it good luck or call it having belief in them, does'nt matter they work for me.

Ive got the cheapy whistles on the front of my Prado and regularly drive thru roo country. Since I have fitted the whistles I have noticed that 99% of the roos will look directly at the car which makes them easier to spot with their eyes shining back at me. I guess the one I hit the other night was in the remaining 1%. ARB took care of him and made a nice satisfying sound too. Don't expect the whistles to scare them off!

An interesting and pretty much conclusive argument I saw against the things was this:
They claim to produce either a high pitched whistle or a tone of some sort. OK. They might. Now, imagine your car, fourbie, truck, whatever, moving along through the air at 100kph. Being produced by your vehicle are the folllwing...road noise from the tyres, there's the noise of the engine and associated mechanical noises large and small spreading out ahead of you and in all directions, there's the miriad little spots on your car at the front and around the sides where the air flow on even the quietest car whistles past at frequencies lower and higher than human hearing (on top of the wind noise you hear), and there's other noises reflecting off trees, bushes, posts, signs, etc, as you drive along carving through the atmosphere at 27 meters a second. Do you honestly think adding one more noise to all that is what makes roos take notice of your car...? |
