I know how much us reb heads love seeing crs being thrashed around (regardless of make) so I thought id post this here, and on just commodores.

In this clip you get to see the ol '79' A9X Torana, A VZ SS commodore and a Holden V8 Supercar, head to head on one lap of bathurst.

Quite interesting..... Njoy!

i vaguely remember a ford version a few years back at one of the GP's in melbourne that involved Lowndsy in his V8 and Dick Johnson in a Siera Cosworth and whatever road car it was at the time (i think it was back in the AU days) i would love to see that again if it did actually happen and i'm not dreaming!

Yeah seen that when it was on tv.They did somthing similer (sort of ) at the gp a few years ago. They pitted Steve Johnson in the Sierra against James Brock in a vl,looked good untill james brock passed Jnr on the first corner, better corigraphed (sp) than the wwe.And what backed it up was that they finished dead even.

I reckon Brock must be getting old,
That torana should absolutely kill the SS, my mate has one and jeez are they fast on the circuit, Ive never seen an SS that can even get close to it.
Even WRX's, XR turbo's,Skylines and EVO's for that matter.
Bloody hot cars, the only Holden I would own.

Is it possible to download that video to my harddrive and later to my ipod? I tried looking for a download button or the save target as this but didn't work.

And I mean an easy way

That really puts things into perspective, the V8 Supercar looked like a rocket, the A9X still holds it's own, but the way technology has changed the Torana would be much quicker with new generation alloy heads etc...

Brock probably didnt want to risk the chance of wrecking it, hence why it wasnt as quick as it should have been.

I suspect Brocky:
a) sucks
b) wasn't driving it anywhere near its limits in deference to wadding someones priceless property into the scenery
c) Hadn't spent alot of time behind the wheel of it in recent times...

McConville in the SS however wan't gogin to have to pay for it if he punched it into the scenery.

Put them on a circuit where the fences aren't scary, and put the same driver in each one and it'd be different.
However, I'd bet your mates car isn't running to group C engine specs.... the factory heads and intake with no porting would be a serious limitation.

In 1979, that Torana lapped bathurst 21 seconds per lap faster than on that footage. There is no way that a standing start and the chase accounts for that much extra time, especially when you take into account how much better the track is now.

21secs faster, but that was when conrod was straight all the way to the end, the chicane was put in later.

I mentioned the addition of Caltex Chase (added after 1996), but it only added 1 to 2 seconds per lap. I'm certain that the improvements to the circuit since 1979 would easily make up the extra time.

Qualifying lap times for Bathurst in 1987 were faster than in 1986 when there was no chase.

(the 1996 date mentioned earlier was a typo)

You know what is really scary?

George Fury's Nissan Bluebird was only 5 seconds a lap slower than the pole position V8Supercar of 2005, and that was way back in 1984, when the cars still closely resembled production cars.

The A9X was two seconds per lap slower than the Tom Walkinshaw Jaguar XJS. This is what cars looked like at Bathurst, back when it was worth watching:

And an A9X driven in anger by Paul Stubber:

I wonder what Greenstuff would have done if DJ hadn't decided to commune with nature.....

Sierra in '87 with what nearly 600hp and doing 300kmh? Compared to the year before which was an R30 Skyline with maybe 400hp.

Edit, the R30 had only 276kw...and the '87 Sierra had 335kw. Quite a bit of difference, and would certainly make up more than 1-2seconds if what you claim is true.

I saw A.M. & P.B. go back to back on the Thursday of the first or second Melb GP. A.M. drove an XY maybe a phase III I think? while Pb was in an XU-1. I wasnt prepared for the outcome. The Torana was easily putting seconds on to the Falcon.

Maybe A.M. was getting old then too!

The big Falcon sounded fantastic though.

You do realise that the Nissan Skylines finished 2nd & 3rd in the 1987 ATCC? In comparison Dick Johnson finished 6th in his Sierra in the 1987 ATCC.

I thought we were talking about the difference between 86 and 87 Bathursts? Now your bringing up the '87 Championship?

If the Sierras where as much faster as you suggested wouldn't they have walked away with the ATCC?
