Cost of Fluids - alternatives?

Hi All,

Went to Ford to grab some coolant and power steering fluid. They wanted $80 for a litre of ps fluid and $100 for 5 litres of coolant.

I didn't bother asking about the brake fluid.

So, I looked around and found that Nulon have the red coolant which should be fine for topping up (I realise the coolant is only required to be changed every 10 years).

There was a typo on the package though. The coolant Spec by ford is WSS-M97B44-D, and they had WSS-M97B44-A written twice on the pack, right underneath each other. I checked every pack and it was the same.

I got home and checked Nulon's site and they have it certified for both A and D. All good.

So what do I do about the power steering fluid? Nulon's product didn't meet the spec, neither did the Castrol pack at SCA. What do you guys use? Surely you don't pay $80 for a litre?

Also, would you simply use any Super Dot 4 brake fluid? That's what the book recommends, so at least that should be simple enough. Nulon has me covered again.

If you live in Perth GK then I have some Ford PS fluid you can top up for free. I needed some for my RS ( a thimble full ) but had to buy their 1 ltr bottle.

Any autobarn can also get/will have the Penrite. Shameless plug over.

I use all their lubricants as they will stand behind any claim you make to Ford i.e. if you use their stuff (the right one obviously) and it is deemed to be the cause of a problem, they will fix it or assist you in getting it fixed with Ford. Have never had any issues whatsoever with Penrite.

My FRAUD dealer wanted $98 for 1 litre of power steering fluid!

I thought I walked into a Mercedes dealer by mistake...

Off to Repco for some Penrite LDAS!

I just did a flush of the Power Steering Fluid. I used Ford Spec WSS-M2C204-A / Pentosin CHF 11S as per owners manual. I flushed it out about 5 times and used just over 1.1L of fluid (I purchased 2x1L bottles, could get away with 1).

The fluid that came out was black (due to age), but the new fluid is Dark Green. This was done a preventative maintenance measure only. I have not had any issues with my Power Steering...

The power steering is still feeling great after just under a year of being replaced!!!

Vacuum out the old (flush) and fill with new. Start car, cycle wheels left an right a few times to pump through the system; then repeat...about 5 or 6 times!

Sure that is not the most efficient way, but I did not want to unbolt fluid reservoirs and hose's and have fluid go every where.

I did a search on YouTube and found the above, worked fine!

I bought from Bursons 20l $320 4l $87 Did mine a year ago, no problems.
About half the Ford price. Says it meets Ford specs.

Changing the fluid wasn't difficult but requires a definite sequence of
actions, which I could try to post soon. I got the information from a Ford factory workshop manual. One problem is that the car
must be raised AND LEVEL. Also, the transmission temp must be about 35
degrees c otherwise the level can be wrong due to expansion/contraction.

Raising the car level was the biggest problem, no jacks allowed anywhere
except the designated jacking points.

I posted a 'how to' on transmission fluid change in 'The Workshop',
'General tech' then I saw a driveline thread. Maybe I should make a new thread in the Mondeo section and one in the Driveline thread.

I'm thinking I'll do one on the diesel fuel filter change as there seems to be a
fair bit of confusion in that area, some of it mine of course .

Main problem mentioned is air in the system and no start. In case anyone wants to get on with it the method I use is to disconnect and quickly plug the fuel lines to and from the filter, then drain the filter and prime the new one before reconnecting. This is easy with 3 caveats: you need nice smooth plugs that fit into the 'o' rings of the connectors, you need a hand priming bulb with a connector on one end to fit the filter, and you need to be paranoid about dirt, especially on the delivery side.

Thats a given, but is there a consensus on a particular brand "better" than the others?

Also found this trans oil on the web.. It says AW-1 in the specs at the top so Im guessing the search is over for a cheap alternative to the Ford stuff...

Very happy using Valvoline Synpower FE 5/30 on the MB Zetec.

you should do this with the engine "OFF"...

the rack acts as a pump cycling the fluid threw the system,
air pockets coming back threw the pump will fail it quick smart with the engine running..

GK just lift the wheels up and go left/right till you see no bubbles from the reservoir..
