Default Heater bypass pipe

I've been having issues with the AU the last couple of weeks, since the pump in the auto gearbox ceased to function.

I pulled out the gearbox, got hold of a replacement unit (only 3 month warranty), but while I was under the car, I found coolant leaking from the passenger side of the motor where the metal bypass pipes live. They were rusted out! I bought the replacement metal pipes to replace the rusted ones... but...

The main pipe goes from the left rear of the engine, behind the motor and then up to the waterpump. I tried pulling the pipe out from the back of the engine, with the gearbox out, and the front of the motor jacked up... there's not enough clearance to get the old one out!

I'm thinking, that since I've got the gearbox out, I should pull out the engine. Then I can fit the new heater pipe, attach the gearbox and install the two as one unit.

Has anyone got a better way of replacing this heater pipe?

Since I've got the gearbox out, I'm thinking of pulling the motor out

Disregard... I had a couple of days off, so I ripped out the engine. I was able to replace the rotten pipe, and then fit the gearbox to the engine and fit the whole lot back into the car as one unit.

I don't see an easy way to replace that pipe!

Now I've just discovered the filler plug on the gearbox has a 5 sided head! :

Once I get some fluid into the box, it'll be good... I hope

What's the isue with that, pretty normal if you ask me, 16mm socket IIRC.

16mm socket slipped right off...

The dead gearbox has a different head on the filler plug... 6 sided 16 mm.
